'He was a nationalist': After Pragya Thakur, another BJP leader praises Godse

Thakur, who is a two-time MLA, was answering questions posed by journalists in Indore. Asked what she thought about Godse, Thakur said, 'Woh Rashtravadi Hai Hi' (He is a nationalist). Asked to comment on Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, she said, 'He (Godse) thought about the nation throughout his life and under what circumstances he made the decision (to kill Mahatma Gandhi) no one knows and I think we should not comment on it.' Chief Minister Kamal Nath condemning Thakur's statement said. 'The comment is regrettable. It shows that the BJP has something in his heart, something else it its brain and another thing in what it says.' Despite attempts Usha Thakur could not be reached for her comments. But BJP spokesperson Hitesh Bajpai said, 'The party has made it clear that this is not the party line. Her comments are condemnable and she should take it back.' Ashes 2019: Jofra Archer misses out as England name playing XI for first Test

'Jofra is coming back from quite a serious injury and we looked at the conditions, about a team that can take 20 wickets here, and it allows him time to get absolutely fit,' England captain Joe Root said at Edgbaston. James Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, returns to the side following a calf injury. Anderson, who turned 37 on Tuesday, will again team up with regular new-ball partner Stuart Broad. All-rounders Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes will provide seam-bowling support in the match starting Thursday. Broad and Woakes, who will be playing on his Warwickshire home ground this week, took all 10 wickets between them as Ireland were shot out for just 38 in their second innings at Lord's. England had already settled on their top seven, with Root going back up to number three and Joe Denly dropping down to four as the hosts look to shore up their struggling batting order. World Cup winners Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, rested against Ireland, return to a side where off-spinner Moeen Ali is the main specialist slow bowler. Australia hold the Ashes but have not won a Test series away to England since 2001. England team for first Ashes Test: Rory Burns, Jason Roy, Joe Root (capt), Joe Denly, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow (wkt), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, James Anderson DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Quentin Tarantino kept Once Upon A Time In Hollywood script in a safe to prevent leaks

'While we were in the production office, we went in a room with the ending. It was taken from a safe and they handed it to only those people who require it to be able to perform their tasks that are necessary,' Richardson said. Actor Margret Qualley recently told IndieWire that she was not allowed to read the full script though co-star Pitt told her about the ending. The only other person to read the entire script during production was a friend of Roman Polanski, Tarantino had told Deadline. The friend got to read the story as Polanski's character features in the story, which deals with two Hollywood washouts, who are neighbours to Polanski's actor-wife Sharon Tate. Tate was murdered by the Charles Manson family cult members in 1969. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. A1 movie review: Santhanam delivers a stress-buster

The results are refreshing, and if you'd want a movie that is akin to a stress buster, then A1 should be your choice after a heavy workday. Saravanan (Santhanam) a local guy from North Chennai gets to meet a typical Tamil cinema's 'loosu ponnu' girl Divya (Tara Alisha Berry), and she is on the lookout to fall for, and marry a bold Brahmin boy. Mistaking Saravanan as one, she is madly in love with him. Her dad Anantharaman (Yatin Karyekar) is an upright and uptight bureaucrat who doesn't consent to his daughter's new relationship. Divya nonetheless idolizes her father and thinks that nobody can find such a flawless man ever. She dares Saravanan to find some weakness and imperfections in her dad, and the man of the hour is always up for a challenge. A twist takes place. How Saravanan and his crew confronts her father forms the reminder of the film. Directed by debutant K. Johnson, A1 is not a film that tries too hard or reinvents the wheel. Santhanam clearly has made this a team-oriented project, and a crew of other comedians including MS Bhaskar, Thangadurai, Manohar, Maran, Kingsly, Sai Kumar and Motta Rajendran has involved themselves to keep the laughs going. Santhanam himself has utilized his strength of caricaturing the traditional Tamil hero image of the swashbuckling one-man army very well. Tara Alisha is just about adequate. Even if things are scripted, you could feel that Santhanam heavily relies on improvisation to deliver the scenes and extract the most out of a dull storyline. Santhosh Narayanan's BGM and songs (mostly gana) are the biggest plus for the film. Overall, A1 doesn't try to deliver anything serious through its comedy. The makers of this film want you to escape the worries of daily life and have a nice big chuckle instead. They've largely succeeded in doing so. ... Cabinet approves bill for 10 per cent reservation to J&K's economically-weaker sections

The bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon as the proposed legislation could not be brought before the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly which has been dissolved. The state is currently under the President's rule. The bill would pave the way for reserving state government jobs to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir who are from economically weaker sections belonging to any religion or caste, the official statement said. The 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections was introduced in the country through the 103rd Constitution Amendment in January. This will be in addition to such reservation available in the central government jobs, it added. Chennai youth among crew detained by Iran on ship

He has been working on this ship for the last four years without any incident or accident, said a member of the family who wished not to be named. Aditya 'We do not want to say anything that could even remotely offend the Iranians who appear to be treating the captives quite decently. What we want to say is that we are rather upset with the indifference of our governments at the Centre and in Tamil Nadu', said another relative, who also claimed that Kerala Government was 'pro-active' in trying to get its men released from the vessel. 'The ship was seized at about 9 pm on July 19 and there was no word from Aditya for the next four days. We were pretty worried. Then on July 23, he called and said he was alright but fatigued by the stress of all that had happened now, and that he has been permitted by the captors to speak to family over phone for just a few minutes every day', said the family member. The family appealed to the Governments at the Centre and in Tamil Nadu to step up efforts through the Indian Mission in Tehran. Den of Spies: Legacy of US-Iran spy wars

On November 4, 1979, at the height of the Iranian Revolution, a group of Iranian students aligned with the newly-established anti-US Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini stormed the US embassy in central Tehran and took 52 Americans hostage - precipitating a 444-day-long hostage crisis. Soon after, Tehran had claimed the storming of the complex exposed a sophisticated, clandestine CIA surveillance hideout based inside the main embassy building. Hindustan Times visited the complex, which stopped operating as a US embassy since the storming in 1979. It had been maintained by the IRGC and was more recently turned into a museum of anti-American propaganda. Locally known as 'Den of Spies' and 'Museum Garden of Anti-Arrogance', the place is now a repository of anti-US propaganda displayed in various forms - artistic murals on walls and stairwells, cheeky political cartoons on the courtyard, a prominent 'Down With USA' doormat, inflammatory anti-West slogans and a trove of allegedly CIA-linked relics discovered in 1979. Inside the complex, which requires visitors to buy entry tickets to have a look at the exhibits, the key highlight is the main building - home to what Iranian authorities claim are remnants of the CIA's state-of-the-art equipment that have been carefully preserved. The so-called 'Den of Spies' is staffed with government-appointed experts help visitors take a look around and translate for them the captions on the exhibits, written in Persian. Among the most interesting relics, as Iranian authorities would have us believe, is a corner desk with a typewriter, lots of documents, photo-paper, stationery, gadgets and canisters of chemicals. The curators claim that's where CIA personnel used to make forged passports for undercover agents travelling in and out of Iran. on display are secret drawers connecting separated office rooms, meant to keep the identities of intelligence officials exchanging materials hidden from one another, as the museum guides claim. The building also houses a soundproof glass room, which the guides believe was used by the CIA to hold secret negotiations. Aside from what are labelled as bugging devices, of various shapes and sizes, computers are exhibited, which Iranian curators say weren't commercially available at the time when the CIA was using them. syed.siraj@htlive.com DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Moratorium on farm loan ends; Kerala to approach banks again

The flood of 2018 resulted in a loss of Rs 3646.4 crore for the sector. Assembly records show that 12 farmers committed suicide in the state since January 2019, signalling the distress faced by the sector. Gold Agriculture Loans A five-member team consisting of officers from Union Agriculture Ministry, RBI, SLBC and Nabard visited five districts based on the complaint by the state government that the benefits of gold agri loans were cornered by non-farmers. They visited 30 banks in Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta for the study. A report on the findings of the team will be published in three days. "The farmers are not getting the benefits of the loans and despite the high number of loans it is not reflected in the sector," said the Agriculture minister. He said agri gold loans formed 62 percent of the total agriculture loan of Rs 80,803 crore. An interest subsidy component in agri gold loans makes it attractive for non-farmers to opt for the loan. Sunil Kumar said the state government along with banks would promote Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) to provide collateral free loans to farmers. He said the number of farmers using KCC would be improved through a promotion drive supported by SLBC. The state had demanded increasing the limit for collateral free loans from Rs 1.67 lakh to Rs 3.25 lakh. BJP appoints Avinash Rai Khanna as in-charge for J&K Assembly polls

His appointment has come amid Nadda planning to visit J&K within the next fortnight to formally launch the party's bid to wrest power in the state. The BJP leaders claimed that Assembly elections would be held in October-November. Even as the poll preparations began in Delhi, there is still panic in the Valley. Attacking the National Conference and PDP for creating fear on troops deployment in the Valley, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on Wednesday said, "Unnecessary fear is being created by local regional parties (National Conference and PDP) for their political interests." The Narendra Modi government will take all necessary steps for the benefit of J&K. "BJP's stand on Article 35A, which grants special privileges to residents of J&K, is clear. However, it is not the party which is going to decide on the matter," Madhav said. He was responding to a question whether Article 35A, which bars outsiders from purchasing land and property in the state. Madhav said the decision on Article 35A would be taken by Prime Minister and his government. On Enforcement Directorate questioning Farooq Abdullah in Chandigarh today, he said, "Today somebody is being questioned in Chandigarh. Don't be surprised if tomorrow someone else is questioned in Srinagar". CEO calls meeting with poll machinery The ball has been set rolling for conduct of Assembly elections in J&K with the state's chief electoral officer set to convene a meeting with district officials for review of the process and political parties gearing up for the polls likely to be held later this year. ED quizzes Farooq Abdullah in alleged cricket scam

Many fear the deployment is linked to a move to scrap Article 35A that gives residents special privileges.Officials said the National Conference chief was questioned at the ED's Chandigarh office from 12.30pm to 5.30pm in connection with a money-laundering investigation related to alleged financial irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association he headed for years in the past.Farooq's statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the officials added. The ED and the National Investigation Agency are part of a central government crackdown on separatists. Farooq is the first politician from the Valley's pro-India camp who has been questioned by one of these organisations.Farooq, who represents Srinagar in Parliament, was unavailable for comment but he told news agency PTI after his questioning that he had "done no wrong" and was "open to investigation".Mehbooba accused the Centre of misusing its agencies. "Misusing central agencies to harass & intimidate those who dissent or don't fall in line has become quite blasé & brazen," she tweeted."JK cricket scam is an old case that's been under investigation for quite sometime. ED questioning Farooq sahab at a time when J&K mainstream parties are collectively standing up to protect its unique identity raises suspicions & questions."The CBI had last year charged Farooq, 81, in a scam linked to the cricket body - the first time the thrice former chief minister had been accused of any scandal in his long political career.Farooq was charged with three others, including Saleem Khan, the then general secretary of the association, Ahsan Mirza, the then treasurer, and Bashir Misgar, a J&K Bank executive, for alleged misappropriation of funds. The alleged scam had surfaced in 2012 - when Farooq's son Omar Abdullah headed the state government - following a complaint lodged by association treasurer Manzoor Wazir against Khan and Mirza. The CBI had taken over the case three years later following directions from the state's high court. The agency alleged that the accused siphoned off Rs 43.69 crore of the Rs 112 crore the Indian cricket board, BCCI, had granted the state body between 2002 and 2011.No action followed for over a year till the ED lodged a case and started its own investigations.A National Conference leader said Farooq was not involved in any wrongdoing and had himself had sought the registration of an FIR in the case. Highly gratified by cooperation from 'great friend' India on Iran: US

- 'Hypocrisy': Iran rejects Donald Trump aide Pompeo's offer to visit Tehran India, which has galloping energy needs, went out of its way to co-operate with the United States. India has brought down the import of oil from Iran, with which it has historic and cultural ties, to almost zero. Referring to an open source information, the official said Iranian export of oil for July was at 1,00,000 barrels per day, which is down considerably from the previous historic low of 7,81,000. The official credited the Trump administration for this and added that Iran has very little to offer in terms of being a trading partner. 'The United States just continues to be appreciative, particularly of India's cooperation, and continues to be very mindful of India's legitimate energy needs,' the senior official said responding to a question on reports about talks between India and Iran on oil trade through their own currencies. 'We are very happy as a major energy producer to contribute to what we see as an ample supply to the global market that can keep India amply supplied with energy,' said the official requesting anonymity. A second senior administration official said that the US officials have been all over the world very carefully making sure that all of its partners and allies and companies around the world understand the consequences of violating the sanctions. The United States has been very explicit about the need to ensure that the sanctionable activity has ceased. 'We're getting very important results there,' the second administration official said. Cricketers cry for dues, CAB cries for funds

Last season, we didn't get the fees despite playing in all the three tournaments. Besides, we are yet to receive some arrears of the previous seasons," a current player told The Telegraph on condition of anonymity."We do understand that the prevailing situation in the Board has led to problems and other issues. But what about the money we are supposed to get from sponsorship? Why aren't we getting that? That payment is the CAB's responsibility."What's happening is very unfortunate," he said. Some senior Bengal cricketers are learnt to be irked mainly because of their sponsorship fee dues. "We hope the crisis gets resolved soon. It's becoming extremely difficult for us players," said a senior cricketer."As far as we know, players from some other states are getting their dues. So why aren't we getting," said another senior cricketer.CAB joint secretary Avishek Dalmiya, however, gave an assurance that the players' dues would be cleared. "We'll definitely clear the dues of the players. Each and everyone will get their share," he said.Dalmiya put the onus on the BCCI. "Look, matters have become complicated as we haven't been receiving the grants and subsidies from the BCCI for the last three years. We are paying our affiliated units and clubs from our fixed deposit."As a result, our fixed deposit reserves have diminished a fair bit. Till the BCCI's annual general meeting takes place, we are not sure if the flow of grants and subsidies will resume," he explained. The BCCI AGM is scheduled on October 22.The CAB, it emerged after Wednesday's finance committee meeting, has already incurred a loss of Rs 28.5 crore for the 2018-19 financial year. But some others questioned Dalmiya's explanation. "What the CAB and other state associations are not getting from the Board is only the amount from TV rights," claimed a representative of an affiliated unit, who spoke under cover of anonymity. "How can subsidies and other grants be a part of that?"All these issues are expected to be discussed in the CAB special general meeting slated to be held on July 31. The BJP prioritizes a show of aggression over honest, inclusive dialogue in Kashmir

On the contrary, it speaks of a situation where the bullet threatens the ballot, that too in a democracy. The march of boots, in conjunction with an advisory by the railway police predicting the onset of an 'emergency' in Kashmir, has fuelled speculation of an impending strike by the Centre against Article 35A, which grants the state's residents special privileges on land and employment. This feverish speculation is a manifestation of a growing chasm in the contract between the State and the people. Strange statements from political executives have done their bit to add to the confusion and erode the trust of the people in the administration. A parliamentarian from Jammu has made the startling claim that militancy was now on its last leg. Data expose his naivety. Around 450 people, including 100 security men, died in Kashmir in 2018, making it the bloodiest year since the inception of insurgency. Equally bizarre was the plea by the governor, Satya Pal Malik, to insurgents to train their guns on the corrupt. Mr Malik acknowledged that such a statement does not behove a governor. Such aggressive rhetoric from the holder of a constitutional position is unlikely to build bridges in the troubled state.Yet, it is the show of aggression that the BJP prioritizes over patient, honest, inclusive dialogue in Kashmir. There is no denying the fact that militancy must be met with the might at the disposal of the State. But boots on the ground will not be enough to root out the violence. The BJP must find ways of engaging in democratic conversation to rebuild the confidence of the people. But that looks improbable at the moment. Assembly elections have been postponed to the end of the year and concern is rising over political designs on Article 35A. These developments portend a crisis, belying the prime minister's hollow message of hope. The Centre must set an example in the use of EVs

The scale of the challenge --- policy, infrastructure and public acceptance --- is evident from a report that Hindustan Times published on July 31. According to the report, State-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), which was tasked with procuring 10,000 electric cars for government departments by January 31, has been granted a year's extension, owing to lack of demand for their deployment to replace diesel and petrol-fuelled vehicles in existing fleets. The tepid response has caused EESL to put its second procurement drive (also for 10,000 EVs) on hold. If government departments are not too keen to use EVs, is it surprising then that the response of the general public is lukewarm? One key issue that is holding the EV boom is the lack of reliable charging infrastructure and power availability, especially in remote areas. While charging infrastructure is not that big a problem for public transport vehicles such as public buses ---- because the company that wins the contract for deploying those sets up the infrastructure ---- and scooters since their batteries can be taken out and charged anywhere ----- the problem is a huge dampener for those who want to EVs as personal cars. The other big hurdle for EV ramp up is lack of an ecosystem for manufacturing critical components such as battery cells (which is half of the vehicle cost), motors and controllers, which are mostly imported from China. India needs large-scale local cell manufacturing. Despite these challenges, it is imperative that the government pushes for green vehicles, and lead by example by expanding their user base. As a starter, why not ask all government officials and ministers --- barring those who need another set of vehicles for security ----- to go for EVs? Along with proactive policies ---- we have seen two important ones this year ---- income tax rebates of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh to customers on interest paid on loans to buy EVs, and the tax rate cut on EVs to 5% from 12% by the GST council ----- use of EVs by officials and ministers will give the required push to the nascent industry as well to the general public to join the EV bandwagon. Forced conversions are un-Islamic, says Imran Khan

"All these things are un-Islamic. If God had not given his messengers the power to impose their beliefs on someone, who are we (to do so)?" he asked. The cricketer-turned-politician asserted that there was no precedent in Islamic history for forcefully converting others. Khan's comments came after Pakistan's independent human rights watchdog in April had raised concerns over the increasing incidents of forced conversions and marriages of Hindu and Christian girls to Muslim men every year. In its annual report, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said that the government has done little to stop forced marriages and urged the lawmakers to pass effective legislations to end the practice. Khan reiterated his commitment to building Pakistan based on the model of 'State of Madina', where citizens are entrusted with rights and provision of facilities without any discrimination, according to Radio Pakistan. He also said that his government is committed to operationalising the Kartarpur corridor on the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. ... This is the first time such a blaze occurred at the terminus," a CMDA official said adding that action will be taken after the police report. Police said after the fire started, there was a scare. "Immediately after the blaze was noticed, the driver of a bus by its side attempted to move the vehicle. Unfortunately, fire spread to the tyre of his bus also and the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran away," said a police officer. There were no casualties. A police officer said that the drivers were taking a nap inside a bus when the fire started. They ran out after smoke engulfed the vehicle and alerted the fire station. CMBT police registered a case and enquiry is on. Meanwhile, police said there was a possibility of the drivers switching on the air-conditioner in the bus for sleeping. Pune top news: BJP MLA asks PCMC to restart water supply in Pimpri Chinchwad

Pune top news: BJP MLA asks PCMC to restart water supply in Pimpri Chinchwad, Kargil war celebrations come to a close, and more This is because the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation is yet to take a decision on scrapping the alternative water supply arrangement. Even as Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar said they will take a decision on Thursday, BJP president and MLA Laxman Jagtap on Tuesday asked the PCMC administration to scrap the alternate day water supply arrangement and restart the daily water supply system. 'Yes, there is enough water in the dam now. The PCMC should restart every day supply. I have asked the administration to take the necessary steps,' said Jagtap. The BJP has been under fire from residents for not putting pressure on the civic administration. Shridhar Chalkha, an activist, said residents, especially, those living in highrises, have to depend on water tankers. 'It is difficult to understand why the BJP is not putting pressure on the administration to restart the earlier arrangement, when the dam level has risen appreciably,' asked S D Patil, a resident of Pimpri. Irrigation officials said there is enough water in Pavana dam to last 8-10 months. 'We hope the water in the dam will remain at the 80-90 per cent level. This is because till the end of September, we are not supposed to release water. The PCMC can directly lift from the river,' he said. Weeklong celebration of 20th anniversary of Kargil War ends A weeklong celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Kargil War culminated with a 'Run of Remembrance' at the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACCS). The ACCS, known as the 'Mecca' of Armoured Corps, started the celebrations with a wreath laying ceremony at the Armoured Corps War Memorial on July 23. The commandant and other senior serving officers and veterans laid wreaths to pay tribute to martyrs. Over the week, motivational lectures for school students and screenings of audio-visual clippings and movies on Kargil war were organised, among other activities. The events culminated on Sunday with a 'Run of Remembrance'. The run was attended by more than 3,000 army personnel, including ladies and children. 'The two suspects were apprehended in Hadapsar while they were riding a bullet motorcycle without a number plate. Upon further verification, we found that the bike was stolen from Parbhani. The accused had made a fake registration certificate (RC) book of the vehicle. We recovered 27 stolen bikes from their possession. We have launched a search for their accomplices,' said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Morale. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Bachchan Singh said the accused have mortgaged some of the 45 bikes they stole to borrow money. 44-year-old music teacher arrested for 'raping' teen A 44-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl over the past three months. The accused, who is a music teacher, threatened to defame her publicly if she revealed the rape to her parents, police said. According to police, the sexual abuse took place on multiple occasions between April 4 and July 1 this year at the accused's house, where the girl had been taking music lessons. Dhanbad water project rolls

We will be forwarding the application forms to the drinking water and sanitation department, which, in turn, will allot the connections" municipal commissioner Chandramohan Kashyap said.DMC junior engineer Mahesh Chandra Bhagat said water supply tests had been conducted on 14 of the 31 towers, but connections were initially being allotted from 11 towers because pipelines from the other three towers could not be laid owing to the widening of Govindpur-Mahuda road."In the initial phase, connections will be allotted through 11 towers situated in rural areas of Katras and Chhatatand such as Siyaljori, New Puti, Sijua and Tetulmari. Later, connections will be allotted through 20 other towers situated in urban areas of Dhanbad circle like Damodarpur, Telipara and Sabalpur," Bhagat said.Notably, the scheme was conceptualised under the millennium city project of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission in 2011 for supplying Damodar water in suburban and rural areas that are not covered under the Maithon Water Supply scheme.Though the project was supposed to be completed in 2014, it was delayed by more than five years due to procedural snags. The project was later divided into two parts, Sindri and Jamadoba, for convenience of execution. The Sindri part, which required construction of a 13.5 million litres per day capacity water treatment plant, an intake wall of 19 million litres per day, five overhead tanks and laying of 84km of pipeline, was made operational in 2016.The Jamadoba phase, which comprised construction of a 143 million litre per day capacity water treatment plant, an intake well of 183 million litre per day capacity, laying of over 260km of pipeline and installation of 31 overhead tanks, was delayed. Renewed interest of Bengal students in the civil services

He graduated in zoology, followed it up with a master's and took up research work at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in Jadavpur, Calcutta. After he qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) for college teaching, he joined Sarojini Naidu College for Women in Dum Dum, Calcutta, as an assistant professor. In the meantime, he had started appearing for the UPSC exams.According to Ghosh, it's difficult to prepare for such an exam from Bengal. He says, "Getting coaching or information is very difficult in the state. I had to depend on material accessed from online sources."Often, a candidate has to sit for this highly competitive exam year after year with unwavering motivation to achieve success. "It appears that some of the brightest students in Bengal, unlike in Delhi and many other states, do not have such long-term focus and perseverance nowadays," rues Bhattacharya."If such a small state [Haryana] can do it, why can't West Bengal?" wonders Debjyoti Barman, a doctor (MBBS) who ranked 647 in the UPSC-CSE 2018-19. "Not only Delhi, states such as Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha too have grown a civil services culture," he adds.If you are a working professional who's aspiring to crack the UPSC-CSE, you can carry on your preparation alongside your job. Many of those who bested the CSE 2018-19 did so. Rajarshi Dasgupta from Asansol did his BTech in electronics and telecommunication from Asansol Engineering College in 2006. Then he qualified in GATE and joined the Bhaba Atomic Research Centre as nuclear scientist at Kalpakkam, 80km from Chennai. There, he made up his mind to become a civil servant. "I started preparation through 'postal test series' from Delhi. After clearing the written exams, I took a coaching for mock interview for free in Chennai. Finally, in 2014, I cracked the UPSC-CSE with a rank of 169," he says. Dasgupta is currently posted as a deputy commissioner in the income tax department in Calcutta. He says, "Within one-and-a-half years of joining the civil services, you can get charge of a territory as big as a European country."Ranabir Bhaumik of West Midnapore came back from Germany to become a civil servant. After getting his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from Jadavpur University, Calcutta, he joined the Max Planck Institute in Germany for a PhD in condensed matter physics. But he felt so isolated from society and his country that within a year, in 2012, he decided to abandon his quest for the PhD and sit for the UPSC exams. "I came to Delhi, rented a shared room with my college friends and started preparing for the civil services exams in a coaching centre." Eventually, he opted for self-study. He met with success (rank 157) after three consecutive attempts. According to him, mock tests and mock interviews are necessary to overcome nervousness and for application of presence of mind. He too joined the IRS and is posted as an assistant commissioner in the income tax department in Calcutta. If you are an aspiring civil servant, there is no need to shift to Delhi to prepare. You can stay in the city and ace the exam with a little help from online resources. After a long hiatus, eight aspirants from West Bengal have qualified in the Union Public Service Commission's (UPSC) prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE) in 2018-19. Although Bengal is home to seven per cent of India's population, its current representation in the Indian Civil Services is only one per cent. Over 50 candidates from Haryana cracked the UPSC civil services exam in 2018. There was a time when Bengal too was well-represented in the civil services. But after the 1970s, the wave of civil service aspirants from the state turned into a trickle. "The number of IAS aspirants from West Bengal started declining in the 1970s as a consequence of the deterioration in academic environment and campus indiscipline," says Amitabha Bhattacharya, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, who retired as the principal advisor of the Planning Commission of India. A graduate of the then Bengal Engineering College in Shibpur, Howrah, he cracked the Civil Services exams in 1974. The 70s was marked by the Naxalite movement and many brilliant students were lost to the "revolution". The movement left a deep impression on the psyche of the youth, who started shying away from entrance exams for civil services. The ecosystem for grooming students for the CSE died out and the few aspirants had to shift to New Delhi for preparation. That trend seems to be gradually reversing in the last few years as more and more aspirants try to crack the CSE. Recently, some successful candidates of 2018 congregated at the ICCR auditorium in Calcutta to share their chemistry of success and encourage youngsters to take up a career in the civil services. Losing fat, and not weight, must be the goal

This number is the sum total of everything our body consists of, right from head to toe. When we say weight loss, we are just being generic and are looking forward to losing the water weight that our body carries on day-to-day basis. Losing water weight is very easy and takes fairly about four to five weeks. A person who loses this weight thinks that he/she has lost weight. But this weight will always come back once you get back to a regular routine. The capacity of our body to retain water differs daily. Our food, daily schedule, routine and the hormones are the major factors which influence this. Now how can one lose weight in the real sense? What should one try to lose if they are looking to lead fit lives? So many questions and the answer to it is really simple - fat loss and muscle gain! The healthy range for an adult man is to maintain himself at 15 - 20 % body fat and for a female it is 20 - 25% of body fat. When we eat a lot, but fail to covert this food into energy due to a sedentary life style, our body stores up all the metabolised food in form of fat. In simple words the calorie intake must be on a lower side when compared to the energy expenditure. Body fat is also of two kinds. One is the subcutaneous fat which is present right below our skin and is fairly easy to lose and not harmful. The second is the visceral fat which accumulates around our organs and is very visible on the stomach and thighs. This fat is dangerous as it inhibits the functioning of our organs and hormones. It is known to induce the lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, chronic heart disease, thyroid and PCOD. Now that we know what body fat is, the best way to stay healthy is to lose it if we are overweight. A structured diet which is carefully customised to person's metabolism, lifestyle habits and routine will be the best approach. Body fat metabolism depends on A wholesome diet of regular home-cooked meals is the key to losing body fat and keeping it at bay. To enhance this process of metabolising fat, we need to add in progressive strength and resistance training. This kind of training helps us build our lean muscle mass, improve stamina, improve our metabolic rate and increase our overall energy expenditure. And this just how I simplify fat loss. It is not rocket science, but just depends on cleverly your diet and workout schedules are structured to suit your body and lifestyle. 'Oh my god! This is in my pool': Woman wakes up to an 7-foot alligator in her backyard

The post, which went viral, triggered many reactions, with some requesting an update on the rescue of the alligator. Alligator mauls python in an epic battle in Florida; video goes viral Describing the incident as 'unnatural', Kibbe told CNN that she was worried that if the reptile came out of the pool, she would not know where it would go. As her children were asleep, Kibbe waited for a couple of hours before calling the police, informing it about the intruder at her place. While she informed the police that the alligator was around 3-4 feet long, she was later told by the trapper who came to take the reptile away that it was around 7-feet long. The trapper dragged the alligator to the front yard and took it to a farm ro release it for mating, the news website reported. Spooked by the incident, Kibbe said even though gator sighting was quite common in Florida, no one in her neighbourhood had spotted one. However, this is not the first time an incident like this has happened in Florida. Earlier this June, a woman had reported an alligator breaking into her kitchen and shared a video of the incident that had gone viral online. What is Article 356?

In view of such turn of events in Karnataka, which were initially triggered by the resignation of 15 MLAs of the ruling Congress-JD(S) and two independents, talks of President's Rule being imposed on the state are doing the rounds. Article 356 of the Constitution of India empowers the President to withdraw from the Union the executive and legislative powers of any state 'if he is satisfied that a situation has arisen in which the government of the state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution'. The determination of the breakdown of constitutional machinery may be done by the President at any time, either upon receipt of a report from the Governor, or suo motu. If approved by both the houses, the President's Rule, as it is most-commonly called, can continue for 6 months. It can be extended for a maximum of 3 months with the approval of the Parliament. Recent instances where Article 356 has been imposed Since the formation of the Republic, President's Rule under Article 356 has been imposed in states in over 100 occasions. The latest being in Jammu and Kashmir . After completion of six months of Governor's rule, President Ram Nath Kovind on December 19, 2018, imposed President's rule in the state, which had plunged into a political crisis after the Mehbooba Mufti-led coalition government collapsed. On June 12 this year, the Union Cabinet approved the extension of President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir for another six months, beginning from July 3. Arunachal Pradesh came under President's Rule from December 16, 2015, to February 19, 2016 , after Congress MLAs approached Governor JP Rajkhowa seeking to impeach Speaker Nabam Rebia. The Governor agreed and called for an emergency session to take up the impeachment motion. Congress protested the Governor's action, but the Centre went ahead and imposed President's Rule in the state invoking Article 356. President's Rule was also in force in Delhi with the Assembly in suspended animation from February 14, 2014, to February 11, 2015, when Arvind Kejriwal resigned as the chief minister after his move to introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill fell through in the Assembly. Follow Karnataka Crisis LIVE Updates here Article 356 was also imposed in Maharashtra from September 28, 2014, to October 31, 2014, after chief minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following the collapse of the 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance in the state. Andhra Pradesh faced the President's Rule from February 28, 2014, to June 8, 2014, due to a political crisis caused by the resignation of CM N Kiran Kumar Reddy and other Congress legislators on February 19, protesting against the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill that bifurcated the state and created a separate state of Telangana. President's Rule was declared in Jharkhand from January 18, 2013, to July 12, 2013, as the Arjun Munda-led BJP government was reduced to a minority after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) withdrew support. Munda resigned and sought dissolution of the state Assembly. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Raghuram Rajan signals Brexit politics deterred him from seeking BOE job

'It's best a country has someone who understands the political situation within that country and knows how to navigate that,' Rajan told the BBC. 'It's obvious I'm an outsider and I have very little understanding of the deep ebbs and flows of politics in that country.' Rajan, who now teaches at Chicago Booth School of Business and once served as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, was recently named as the second most likely to get the BOE job by economists in a Bloomberg News survey. He trailed Andrew Bailey, the chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority. 'Perfectly Happy' UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond started searching for a replacement for Carney in April and has attracted 30 applications. He met with Rajan in January, according to the Treasury, although Rajan declined to tell the BBC if he had been approached to run the central bank. 'I'm perfectly happy in my job,' he said. 'I haven't applied for any job.' Hammond, who is likely to exit the Treasury once a new prime minister takes office next week, had spoken of looking for a new governor with international experience. Former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen also didn't apply, a person familiar with the matter said this week. The reluctance of foreign economists to step forward may boost the chances of domestic contenders such as Bailey or current BOE officials Andrew Haldane, Jon Cunliffe, David Ramsden and Ben Broadbent. Others linked to the role include Shriti Vadera, the Santander U.K. Plc chair, and Sharon White, outgoing chief executive officer of regulator Ofcom. Gerard Lyons, a former economic adviser to Boris Johnson, the likely next prime minister, has been interviewed for the job, according to The Times. Rajan knows first hand of the political challenges of being a central banker. He left India's central bank after just one term amid heavy criticism from segments of the government for offering opinions on matters unrelated to monetary policy. Rising Tory star: Rishi Sunak

s chief secretary to the treasury, Sunak will work closely with Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid, who has been shifted from home secretary to chancellor.Sunak is now responsible for the government's "spending reviews and strategic planning, public sector pay and pensions, efficiency and value for money in public service, procurement, capital investment, transport policy, including HS2, Crossrail 2, Roads, Network Rail, Oxford-Cambridge corridor, women in the economy, childcare policy, including tax free childcare" and other issues.Compared with the two other Indians in the cabinet -Priti Patel, the new home secretary, or even Alok Sharma, promoted from minister of state for employment to secretary of state for international development - Sunak has so far avoided the limelight. But that could change. On Thursday, he gave his first interview in his new job to the BBC, explaining why he thought the government could put new money into the host of ambitious plans Boris has announced."The good news is - and I pay tribute to the outgoing chancellor (Phillip Hammond) for doing a very good job of managing our nation's finances over the past few years - we are in a relatively healthy position at the moment," he said."We have built up fiscal headroom - £26bn is available to be deployed on the priorities that British people want to see: more investment in, for example, police on the street, slightly more funding on our schools."Asked to clarify whether this was old money, he explained: "This is the headroom that we have that has not been allocated and deployed in various priorities."Appointed around midnight on Wednesday, Sunak attended his first cabinet meeting at 8.30am on Thursday and sat at one end of the table. He told BBC Breakfast TV that Boris needed to appoint people committed to his priorities. The Times has described the departure of 17 members of Theresa May's government as an "afternoon of carnage. the most brutal cabinet purge in modern political history"."Ruthless Johnson takes his revenge," was the headline in The Guardian, which saw the sackings of Jeremy Hunt (foreign secretary), Penny Mordaunt (defence), Liam Fox (international trade) and Greg Clark (business) as a "merciless purge" of his detractors from May's cabinet. But Sunak, a supporter of Boris and of Brexit who had kept his head below the parapet, justified Boris's decision to appoint a cabinet in his own image."It is important that people around that table are committed to these priorities: delivering Brexit, and this exciting domestic agenda he outlined," he said.About his own background, Sunak said he was not born to privilege. "My grandparents arrived in this country with little. My parents, a GP and a pharmacist, grew up wanting a better future for their children."He paid tribute to his parents for making it possible for him to have a "great education". He was head boy at Winchester, one of Britain's leading public schools where the Nawab of Pataudi Jr had been a pupil and captain of cricket in the 1950s ("I am a great admirer of Tiger Pataudi").He was an undergraduate at Lincoln College, Oxford, and took a First in PPE (philosophy, politics and economics) before going to Stanford to do an MBA as a Fulbright scholar. In August 2009, he married Narayana Murthy's daughter Akshata at a relatively simple but elegant and high-profile wedding in Bangalore. The couple, who have two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka, had met as students at Stanford. The wedding guests included Azim Premji, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Anil Kumble, Praful Patel, Nandan M. Epstein found unconscious in jail

he Bureau of Prisons did not immediately respond to requests for information. The department of justice declined to comment.Last week, Judge Richard M. Berman of the Federal District Court denied bail for Epstein, rejecting his request to be detained at his Upper East Side mansion as he awaited trial. His lawyers had proposed allowing him to post a substantial bond and stay in his mansion guarded by 24-hour security, at his expense. Prosecutors opposed that proposal, arguing Epstein was seeking "special treatment" and trying to build his own private jail - a "gilded cage".Epstein, 66, was arrested on July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey after a flight from Paris. He is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. An indictment unsealed on July 8 charged him with sex trafficking and conspiracy. Prosecutors said that between 2002 and 2005, Epstein and his employees paid dozens of underage girls to engage in sex acts with him at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida.Epstein faces up to 45 years in prison if he is convicted of sex-trafficking and conspiracy charges, and the long sentence, the government argued, gave him a motive to flee.He has pleaded not guilty. For years, Epstein, a hedge fund manager, has socialised with famous and powerful people including former President Bill Clinton, Prince Andrew of Britain and President Trump. An investigation into accusations against him was opened in Florida in 2005. But in 2008, prosecutors in Miami made a secret deal that allowed Epstein to avoid federal prosecution. He spent about a year in a Palm Beach jail, where he was allowed to leave six days a week for work. The plea deal was overseen by R. Alexander Acosta, then a US attorney in Florida. He was widely criticised as letting Epstein off the hook and has since resigned as Trump's labour secretary. When Judge Berman denied Epstein's bail on July 18, he said Epstein was a flight risk, citing his "vast wealth" - prosecutors say they believe he is worth more than $500 million - including private planes and residences abroad. He pointed to a safe the authorities said they found in Epstein's Manhattan home that contained cash, diamonds and an expired passport issued by a foreign country (later identified as Austria) that had Epstein's photo but a different name. Two women who said Epstein had abused them bolstered the government's argument, urging Judge Berman to deny him bail."He's a scary person to have walking the streets," said Courtney Wild, who said Epstein began sexually abusing her when she was 14. Another one bites the dust?

Speaker disqualifies 14 more Karnataka MLAs; vote today The Congress-JD(S) combine has the support of only 100 MLAs (excluding the Speaker) giving enough indications of which way the trust vote on Monday is likely to go. The BJP slammed the Speaker's action, calling it 'unfair and violative of the law'. Last week, Mr Kumar had disqualified three MLAs — Mr Ramesh Jarkiholi and Mr Mahesh Kumatalli of the Congress, and Ranebennur KPJP MLA R. Shankar (who later merged with the Congress) for violating the whip issued by their party. Addressing a hurriedly-called press conference on Sunday, the Speaker said Congress Legislature Par-ty leader Siddaramaiah and KPCC president Dinesh Gundurao had filed four petitions against the rebel MLAs seeking their disqualification since they had violated the whip issued by the party. Former CM H.D. Kuma-raswamy had filed another petition seeking similar action against three rebel JD(S) legislators. All legislators were issued notices to personally appear on specified dates; but none of them turned up. After going through several judgments, the Speaker said he had decided to disqualify Pratap Gouda Patil (Maski), B.C. Patil (Hirekerur), Shiva-ram Hebbar (Yellapur), S.T. Somashekar (Yesvant-pur), Byrathi Basavaraj (KR Puram), Anand Singh (Vijaynagar), Roshan Baig (Shivajinagar), N Munira-tna (Raja Rajeshwari Nagar) , Dr K Sudhakar (Chikballapur), Srimanth Patil (Kagawad), M.T.B. Nagaraj (Hosakote), all Congress MLAs and A.H. Vishwanath (Hunsur), Narayana Gowda (KR Pete) and N Gopalaiah (Mahalakshmipuram) Asked whether the disqualified legislators can question his decision in a court of law, the Speaker said. 'I have done my job, I am not worried (about its consequences). I will be vindicated if the court upholds my decision and I will stand corrected if my decision is changed. I have discharged my duty in the given situation and not acted under any pressure.' Replying to a question regarding the BJP's reported plan to move a motion of no-confidence against him, he said, 'Whatever I have done is purely as per the law, let the next Speaker ponder over it,' dropping broad hints that he is planning to step down on Monday. The Speaker also made it clear that there are only two items on the agenda of the session on Monday—one, the CM seeking a vote of confidence and two, the debate and voting on the finance bill which needs to be passed by Tuesday. Reacting to the verdict disqualifying them, Hunsur JD(S) rebel MLA A.H. Vishwanath remark-ed that the Speaker had announced his decision in a hurry and it seemed like he was under great pressure to pronounce his decision at the earliest. 'We will definitely question this decision in the Supreme Court,' he said. Another rebel MLA, Mr Pratap Gouda Patil said they had expected this decision after the Speaker disqualified three legislators last week. This was not the end for them as they have already decided to question the Speaker's decision in the apex court, he added. However, Mr Siddaramaiah, in a tweet, hailed the Speaker's decision describing it as "a victory for democracy." In another tweet he said the order will send a strong message to elected representatives across the country who might fall into the 'BJP's trap'. The BJP slammed the Speaker's action, calling it 'unfair and violative of the law' which, it said, had been taken 'yielding to the pressure from a party'. 'It is a motivated and defective order," said senior BJP leader Govind Karjol, adding, the rebels would challenge it in the Supreme Court, where they were certain to "get justice.' ... Obesity in 60's can be the cause of brain ageing

Participants' BMI and waist circumference were measured at the beginning of the study. An average of six years later, participants had MRI brain scans to measure the thickness of the cortex area of the brain, overall brain volume, and other factors. A total of 346 of the participants had a BMI of less than 25, which is considered normal weight; 571 people had a BMI of 25 to 30, which is considered overweight; and 372 people had a BMI of 30 or higher, which is considered obese. For the waist circumference, which can be different for men and women, the normal weight group, which was 54 per cent women, had an average of 33 inches, the overweight group, which was 56 per cent women, had an average of 36 inches, and the obese group, which was 73 per cent women, had an average of 41 inches. Having a higher BMI was associated with having a thinner cortex, even after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect the cortex, such as high blood pressure, alcohol use, and smoking. In overweight people, every unit increase in BMI was associated with a 0.098 millimetre (mm) thinner cortex and in obese people with a 0.207 mm thinner cortex. Having a thinner cortex has been tied to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Having a bigger waist was also associated with a thinner cortex after adjusting for other factors. "In normal ageing adults, the overall thinning rate of the cortical mantle is between 0.01 and 0.10 mm per decade, and our results would indicate that being overweight or obese may accelerate ageing in the brain by at least a decade," Rundek said. Rundek noted that the study does not prove that extra weight causes the cortex to get thinner. It only shows an association. A limitation of the study was that, like many studies of older people, it is possible that the healthiest people are more likely to live longer and take part in studies, so that may affect the results. ... Facebook Co-Founder reportedly lobbying for firm's break up: Report

Zuckerberg, however, rejected these calls, saying the size of the social media giant was actually a benefit to its users and the security of the democratic process. Hughes's lobbying efforts come at a time when the US Department of Justice's anti-trust division is reviewing whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation or, otherwise, harmed consumers. The review will consider the widespread concerns that consumers, businesses, and entrepreneurs have expressed about search, social media, and some retail services online, the US Department of Justice said this week. Facebook has agreed to pay a historic penalty of $5 billion to settle the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that the company deceived users about their ability to control the privacy of their personal information. Before trust vote loss, Kumaraswamy signed one last order to keep his promise

Addressing media, a day after he was ousted from power, in Bengaluru, Kumaraswmay expressed satisfaction that he had managed to score with his parting shot--enabling waiver of loans for landless labourers, taken even from private money lenders. Kumaraswmay said that the measure was fashioned as a one-time relief lasting a period of one year from the date of the order. 'I am satisfied that I've brought this. It will apply to those who availed loans before this act came to being. This is an opportunity to better people's lives. This act lasts for a year and within that time the details of loans have to be submitted.' Kumaraswamy said while thanking the bureaucrats who according to him made it possible for his government to implement a few significant welfare schemes in the short 14-months despite continuous attempts to destabilize his government. Kumaraswamy, while counting the debt relief act as one of his government's biggest achievements, said the landless-labourer-loan-waiver order doesn't set any limits to the loan amount that could be waived. 'There is no money going out from the government. The central government had sought multiple clarifications. There is no limit to the amount that can be waived,' he said. No-deal Brexit choice before Indians in UK

oris, who has triggered a 10 per cent pro-Tory "bounce" in the polls, has appointed a "war cabinet" that includes chancellor Sajid Javid and home secretary Priti Patel, with the one aim of enforcing a no-deal Brexit by October 31 "by any means necessary".Its key member is Michael Gove, the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster who is in charge of no-deal preparations in the cabinet office and who said the government is "operating on the assumption" that Britain will leave the EU without a deal on October 31."With a new Prime Minister, a new government, and a new clarity of mission, we will exit the EU on October 31. No ifs. No buts. No more delay. Brexit is happening," he said in an article in The Sunday Times."The EU's leaders have, so far, said they will not change their approach - it's the unreformed withdrawal agreement, take it or leave it. We still hope they will change their minds, but we must operate on the assumption that they will not."Writing in The Sunday Telegraph, Javid declared: "In my first day in office as chancellor, I tasked officials to urgently identify where more money needs to be invested to get Britain fully ready to leave on October 31 - deal or no deal."He is making available additional spending, which will include financing one of the country's "biggest ever public information campaigns" to ensure individuals and businesses are ready for a no-deal exit. The latter will include some 800 Indian companies that have invested in the UK and created an extra 100,000 jobs. That makes India the fourth biggest investor in the UK - and Narendra Modi made it clear at the outset that India viewed the UK as "the gateway to Europe".Whether Boris will be able to get a no-deal Brexit through the Commons with a Tory majority of 2 - this could soon be reduced to 1 - remains to be seen.Geoffrey Cox, who has retained his job as attorney-general, apparently believes Boris can legally take Britain out of the EU even if he loses a no-confidence vote.It is reported that Philip Hammond, who resigned as chancellor rather than allow Boris to sack him, has met Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer with a view to forming a cross-party alliance aimed at thwarting a no-deal Brexit.Starmer confirmed in The Observer: "The political direction of travel under Boris Johnson is clear, and so it is more important than ever that we build a strong cross-party alliance to stop a no-deal Brexit."The Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has now come out in support of remaining in the EU, said on television that he would table a vote of no confidence to bring down Boris's government: "I can guarantee you this, we will do everything to prevent a no-deal Brexit, we will do everything to challenge this government, and we will do it at a time of our choosing."The latest opinion poll, conducted by Deltapoll for The Mail on Sunday, shows the Conservatives have gained 10 points to stand at 30 per cent because of the "Boris bounce". That puts them five points ahead of Labour at 25 per cent, with the Liberal Democrats on 18 per cent and the Brexit Party on 14 per cent. The leading polling expert in the country, John Curtice, professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, said the latest survey "gives Mr Johnson some encouragement, but is not as yet a sufficient foundation for him to want to go to the polls. On this issue at least, Mr Johnson would be wise to proceed with caution". DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Statues come to life at Europe's biggest 'living statue' festival in Belgium

A bullfighter, Valkyrie, baroque dancers and the sea god Poseidon were among the sights on parade. Two artists, dripping in mock blood, came headless to the festival. Antonio Morerra came from Portugal and dressed as bullfighter. 'I am a torero,' said the man, his costume and face painted in blue and gold. 'Need faster weather updates', says, IMD chief

This will ensure the public is aware of any changes in weather conditions. We will be directing our team to look into this and enhance the current framework' The district rainfall forecast on IMD's website was revised at 1pm on Sunday to 'heavy to very heavy rain at few places' for Sunday and Monday, and 'heavy rain at isolated places' for Tuesday. On July 8, IMD had predicted over 200mm rain for 24 hours (from July 9 to 10) when its Doppler weather radar was not functioning. On July 10, the city recorded 7mm over 24 hours. A similar incident occurred on Sunday when 0.5mm rain was recorded between 8.30am and 8.30pm in the suburbs and 4.8mm rain in south Mumbai, against an 'extremely heavy' rain warning. As per the IMD standard operating procedure, the local forecast for Mumbai is updated four times a day and considering the rapid intensification of a weather event, Nowcast warnings are issued four hours in advance and updated every six hours. 'Weather models over the last two days had indicated a surge in rainfall activity over the north Konkan, including Mumbai, with extremely heavy rain expected. While predictions for Friday and Saturday were accurate, the intensity of rain shifted to the east of Mumbai, with increased showers towards interior areas on Sunday,' said Dr Ramesh. A closer look at forecasts for significant or special weather events over the past two years shows that IMD issued 28.3% incorrect 24-hour forecasts for an average of four months (June to September) in 2018, while 31.8% incorrect forecasts were issued for 48 hours during the same period. The data was acquired through an RTI query filed by activist Chetan Kothari. In 2017, IMD's response to a separate RTI filed by Kothari showed that of 32 rainfall warnings during monsoon, 14 were incorrect, accounting for a 44% error rate. (see box). Dr Ramesh said that the addition of a network of 160 rain gauges and four small X-band Doppler radars next year will improve forecasting drastically. Don't judge your kids: A mom shares her parenting wisdom

It helps to keep your cool and be positive and patient in your approach when dealing with children. When your focus on their good behaviour outweighs your attention to the negative, you are indirectly helping them be more confident. So what if your child did not score well in his/her math exam? Maybe he failed the test. Did you give him a hug first? Did you ask what happened and where did he/she go wrong? Did you praise your child for trying? Or did the fear of your child growing up to be a failure overtake you? Did you yell at him for failing? If you are angry and yell as a reaction, that is exactly what your child will learn. Judging him, calling him lazy for not putting in more effort and worse comparing his failure or bad behaviour to his 'better' sibling, works to the contrary. On the other hand, pick up his good points, even if it seems small. Praise your child for every small thing to build his/her confidence. Test scores are just an outcome. By focusing only on a good score, you are not preparing the child to be successful for a bigger achievement. In fact, neither are you preparing him to face failures. There are bound to be ups and downs in life. But if you focus and applaud the child for the effort and not the outcome, this will be a good life lesson. Do your kids seem destructive? They probably just want to play I am not suggesting that you overlook his pranks when it needs correction. Correct them with kind words, but it's advisable to be tactful and clever about it. Maybe your child is not oriented towards math. Maybe you were not either. You will only dampen his confidence by yelling at him. If you want a long-term sustainable positive effect on your children's growth into a well-rounded adult, these small praises are the ones your children will remember. This behaviour will also nurture and contribute to their confidence and is a useful life tool. As children, they also learn to depend and look up to you, especially when they are in trouble. With your love and patience, you have earned their trust and helped build their confidence. This develops a healthy positive learning attitude in your child's life, and it is one big factor to propel them into successful adults. (The writer is author of the book The Game of Change.) Teething in babies: Signs to watch out for, tips to soothe

That said, excessive drooling can indicate health complications like diarrhea, which can lead to diaper rash. Consult your doctor immediately in such cases. Which is the right toothbrush for your child? 3. Crying and irritability The baby is usually more cranky and fussy during the teething process because of the tender, swollen gums. Get rid of your child's thumb sucking habit for good 4. Fever Your baby might experience a slightly raised temperature (less than 101 degrees Fahrenheit) during teething. Contact your doctor if the body temperature rises beyond this and persists. 5. Sleep disruption During this time, babies may also find it difficult to sleep at night or during nap time because of the discomfort your little one might feel from swelling and soreness. How to soothe a teething baby Follow these tips to soothe your teething baby: 1. Try putting something cold in your baby's mouth like a cold pacifier, cool water or clean wet washcloth. 2. Don't stop your baby from chewing or biting but make sure whatever he or she puts in the mouth in safe and clean. 3. You can also massage on your baby's gums and rub them with your clean finger. Massaging your baby's gums before each feeding may keep her from biting while breastfeeding. 4.
