Aisam Qureshi takes a swipe at India's 'lame excuses' on Davis Cup tie

The meeting on Monday is to discuss security arrangements for the Indian team in Pakistan for the September 14-15 tie, and for another push by India at moving the tie to a neutral venue. 'Our sports and our people have had to suffer for the last decade or so when ITF had banned Davis Cup matches to be hosted by Pakistan,' Qureshi told Pakistani newspaper The Nation. 'Now when the ITF security team has visited Pakistan and has shown satisfaction with the arrangements made by Pakistan government and the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) has assured that Indian delegation will get red box security, why are they making lame excuses?' ITF should take a trip to Pakistan and then decide if it's safe enough, says Anand Amritraj 'If the Indian team doesn't want to come to play in Pakistan, the ITF must simply apply its rules. The world has to realise the sacrifices people of Pakistan, armed forces of Pakistan and sportsmen of Pakistan have to make for war, which was always imposed on us. We are a sports-loving and highly peaceful nation and want to play sports and don't believe in bringing politics into sports and expect the same from others… I haven't contacted (Rohan) Bopanna and other Indian tennis friends yet, but if I have to talk to them, for the sake of tennis and country, I am ready to play my role. But I once again remind ITF and India that Pakistan should not be punished for others' deeds.' From 2005 to 2017, the ITF had banned Davis Cup ties from being hosted in Pakistan due to safety concerns. Once the ban was lifted, Hong Kong refused to travel to Islamabad for a tie and was consequently relegated to a lower Group and slapped with a fine by the world body. Earlier this month, AITA had selected a full-strength Indian team that included 39-year-old Qureshi's former doubles partner Bopanna, with whom he had reached the men's doubles final at the 2010 US Open. In singles, India has the services of top 100 player Prajnesh Gunneswaran (91), Ramkumar Ramanathan (180) and Saketh Myneni (250), and Asian Games men's doubles gold medallist Divij Sharan (47) will partner Bopanna (39) for the doubles match. Meanwhile, Pakistan will have to rely on two 39-year-olds, Qureshi (ranked 54 in doubles) and the unranked Aqeel Khan. 'As far as depth in the Pakistan Davis Cup team is concerned, we don't have any cover for me or Aqeel. But like I said, even if I have to go through the pain barrier, I will do that and help Pakistan win the Davis Cup tie against India. My message for India and ITF is very clear. Come to Pakistan and feel the difference, and don't bow down to unwanted pressure. I know the Indian team and their federation is facing huge pressure but they must fulfill their international obligations,' Qureshi added. 'India has a far better and balanced side than Pakistan and, on paper, are more than 100 per cent sure to win the tie. But we are never afraid of playing any given opponent. It would be a great occasion and a message to the international community that Pakistan and India are playing Davis Cup. They will never forget the hospitality and love given by the people of Pakistan and will feel like home and it will be good for the tennis and people of both countries as well.' Meanwhile, the Indian players have been jittery about going to Pakistan, having twice written to AITA making their stand clear. And with relations between the two countries remaining sour, tennis is the last thing on the Indian players' minds. Auto sales fall to 19-year low, stir questions on deeper malaise

he auto industry employs over 3.5 crore people directly and indirectly. The quibbleThe auto industry seems to be divided over how serious the problem really is.Maruti Suzuki chairman R.C. Bhargava continued to insist that the crisis was transient and would blow over by the end of the third quarter (October-December)."I don't think there is a major problem in the economy at all. These transient problems will go away in a few months," Bhargava told a television channel. However, Soumitra Bhattacharya, managing director of Bangalore-based auto component maker Bosch, said: "The slowdown is not cyclical but structural."Bhattacharya is one of the first high-level executives to characterise the crisis as "structural" and not "cyclical" - which could spark more than a semantic quibble within corporate boardrooms over the nature of the overall slowdown of the economy at a time when financing flows to the industry has started to slow. The Narendra Modi government has been refusing to acknowledge the seriousness of the problem and has dragged its feet on a stimulus package to revive the faltering economy.Earlier this week, Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das also waded into the debate."Our understanding is at this point, it is perhaps a cyclical slowdown, not really a deep structural slowdown," the RBI governor said after the bank's monetary policy committee cut its growth forecast for the economy to 6.9 per cent from 7 per cent earlier.A cyclical slowdown would suggest that matters would improve in a couple of months; a structural problem would require a pump-priming package of measures from the government backed by a raft of steps by the RBI to improve credit flows.Revival packageThe automobile industry has seen downturns before: in 2008-09 and 2013-14. But back then, the mitigating factor was that at least some segments of the industry were growing."This time around, all the segments of the industry are reporting a decline in sales," SIAM director-general Mathur said."What is extremely worrisome is the fact that the decline in July is a lot worse than that in the April-July quarter. And let's not forget that the first quarter of last year had also seen a decline over the year before," said Rajesh Goel, senior vice-president and director (sales and marketing) at Honda Cars India Ltd."We are hoping that the government would soon come out with a revival package.. However, it is still not clear what all elements would be included in it," Mathur added. The automobile industry has been pressing for a cut in the goods and services tax on vehicles from 28 per cent to 18 per cent but has been fobbed off by the government which is battling its own problems with falling revenue collections.Bhargava believes that the crisis has exacerbated because of a convergence of negative factors: new regulations on safety features making it mandatory for cars to have airbags and anti-lock braking systems (ABS); the introduction of collateral-based financing for automobile dealers, higher loan rates for new car purchases; and a three-year insurance policy. All of these have raised the costs of ownership and deterred sales, the Maruti Suzuki chairman says."If this industry goes down, then everything gets hurt. Manufacturing, jobs and revenue to the government," added Mathur.Last week, Tata Motors and Mahindra and Mahindra announced plans to cut production at their plants in response to one of the worst downturns that the industry has faced."The headwinds faced by the automotive industry continue as a result of subdued consumer sentiment.. We hope that the overall buying sentiment will improve in the run-up to the festive season and with the monsoon turning out to be better than initially anticipated," said Veejay Ram Nakra, M&M's chief of sales and marketing (automotive division).Bhargava lives in hope too. He reckons that the decline in percentage terms may not be as severe as the base effect of the third quarter kicks in. But that would be a statistical outcome - and would not really mark a turnaround. Automobile sales sank to a 19-year low in July and tumbled 18.71 per cent to 18,25,148 units, deepening concerns that the prolonged slump in one of the key sectors points to deeper problems in a stuttering Indian economy.Passenger vehicle sales - one of the closely watched high-frequency indicators - plunged 30.98 per cent to 200,790 units compared with 290,931 units in the same month last year. The fall in passenger vehicle sales was the ninth consecutive month of decline, sparked by a financing crunch that has triggered wide-scale job losses in the auto sector. On Tuesday, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) released figures for July that showed overall vehicle sales had dived 18.71 per cent from 22,45,223 units in July 2018.This is the biggest decline in vehicle sales since December 2000 when it had plunged by 21.81 per cent.Car sales slumped by 35.95 per cent to 122,956 units from 191,979 units in the same month a year ago.Maruti Suzuki India - the country's largest car maker - posted a 36.71 per cent decline in its July sales at 96,478 units. Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) saw sales dip 10.28 per to 39,010 units.Two-wheeler sales last month declined 16.82 per cent to 15,11,692 units compared with 18,17,406 units in the year-ago month.Hero MotoCorp registered a 22.9 per cent drop in sales at 511,374 units.Commercial vehicle sales were down 25.71 per cent to 56,866 units in July as compared with 76,545 units in July 2018. Travelling to chikungunya-prone areas? Keep in mind these pointers

Although chikungunya does not kill, high morbidity rates and prolonged polyarthritis may lead to considerable discomfort in the affected population, writes Dr P Venkata Krishnan, Internal Medicine, Paras Hospital, Gurgaon. There are two key pointers to remember while deciding on such travel destinations. There is no vaccine or medicine to prevent chikungunya and the only way is to prevent mosquito bites. Factors responsible for the resurgence of chikungunya in and around the Indian sub-continent include viral mutation and emergence of Aedes albopictus as a more efficient vector, besides Aedes aegypti, for the transmission of the disease. The lack of herd immunity and in-efficient vector control measures in the affected areas are other important factors. Why chikungunya slips under dengue radar Prevention Preventing bites can be difficult, but it is important, since just one bite can make you ill. Follow the steps below to reduce the chances of being bitten by mosquitoes: *Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and hats to cover exposed skin. *Use an appropriate insect repellent as directed. *If you are also using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent after that. *Follow package directions when applying repellent on children. Avoid applying repellent to their hands, eyes, and mouth. *Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Treated clothing remains protective even after multiple washings. Do not use permethrin directly on skin. *Stay and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms. *Use a mosquito net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors. Malaria: Know the causes, symptoms and treatment and keep yourself safe this monsoon If diagnosed with chikungunya Symptoms are generally self-limiting and last for 2-3 days. The virus remains in the human system for 5-7 days and mosquitoes feeding on an infected person during this period can also become infected. Chikungunya shares some clinical signs with dengue and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common. Most people recover fully, with symptoms resolving in three to 10 days. For some people, joint pain may continue for months, or even years. What to eat after diagnosis Diet is an important part of treatment and recovery, and as a viral disease, chikungunya is no different. Tender coconut water is a good choice that helps detoxify the body, while keeping you hydrated. Besides, one should have green, leafy vegetables because they are low in calories but high in vitamins and other minerals. A light preparation of any yellow dal (lentil) or soup is good due to their protein content while the water in the dal helps in keeping your body hydrated. Foods rich in vitamin c, such as oranges, kiwis and guavas, are a must during chikungunya not only because their help bring back appetite but they are also known for improving immunity. "I am no hero...": Utpal Dutt, the anti-cleric extraordinaire

oday is Dutt's 26th death anniversary. When we talk about censorship in contemporary times, it is perhaps worthwhile to note that Dutt struggled with censorship his whole life. From the early 60s, through the tumultuous 70s which witnessed the Indian Emergency, Dutt's productions always unsettled those in power and relentlessly questioned the status quo. Regimes have changed, but the fear of the man on the street turning political, aided by the lucid, comprehensible demanour of theatrical productions still makes those in power sweat. One might go as far to say that the history of independent India can be written as a history of censorship - forms of which have often resulted in the complete obliteration of voices; Safdar Hashmi was killed in 1989 while performing his street play Halla Bolin Jhandapur. In an interview given to India Today in 1977, Dutt observes: When you talk of the 19 months [of the Indian Emergency of 1975], you talk of the months of the Emergency. But West Bengal has been virtually under Emergency since the overthrow of the United Front government and the rigged elections of 1972. These months were one great scene of white terror against the theatre. About 150 groups were broken up by gangsters and police action. Plays were banned, actors beaten up and hauled to court. In a country where accusations and instances of growing intolerance and political apathy are on the rise, one wonders how Dutt would have reacted. In an article written by his daughter Bishnupriya Dutt, she remarks that her father would have definitely been accused of sedition had he been alive now; and that he would have happily taken that accusation head on, the only way he knew - by staging 'seditious' plays.Might we remind ourselves here, Socrates was put to trial and death for corrupting the youth. I am no hero, I hated every minute of my prison time. But the seven months passed off quickly [...] there were the fascinating convicts - murderers, bandits and completely innocent men sent to prison by conniving feudal lords. [...] About 98% of the prisoners serving sentences in jail had been convicted for the so-called crimes against 'property'. The prisoner is a weapon in the class struggle, in the ceaseless war to maintain private property. All the talk of reforming and re-educating criminals is balderdash. One does not have to go back that many years. In September 2016, The Department of English and Foreign Languages at the Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh produced a dramatic adaptation of Mahasweta Devi's short story Draupadi . The play was part of a day-long programme commemorating the author who passed away recently. Not long after the production, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), along with some ex-servicemen and locals, protested at the University, stating that the play portrayed army men in poor light and hence was anti-national.Draupadi narrates the story of Dopdi Mejhen, a 27 year old Santhal woman, rendered an insurgent in the eyes of the state. She survives several custodial rapes and tortures before facing the perpetrator of her fate in the climax of the story. That Dutt was an avowed communist is not unknown to many. His theatrical sojourn delineates his constant struggle to come up with narratives which laid bare the exploitation of the hoi polloi. Beginning with European theatre, markedly Shakespeare ( he caught the attention of Geoffrey and Laura Kendal of the itinerant Shakespeareana Theatre Company with his Othelloand embarked on a two-year-long tour with them), Brecht, Ibsen among others. But his introduction to the Naxalbari movement propelled him into exploring Bengali folk theatre, especially the jatra. This gave birth to numerous adaptations and monumental originals which shaped modern Bengali theatre. Angar (Coal) (1959), dealt with the exploitation of miners.Kallol (Outcry)involved the Royal Indian Navy mutiny of 1946. Louha Manab (The Iron Man), written in 1964 about the trial of a Stalinist ex-Politburo member by supporters of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1963, was performed while he was imprisoned at Alipore jail in 1965 by the Little Theatre. ED arrests Kamal Nath's nephew Ratul Puri in Rs 354 crore bank loan fraud case

He will be produced before a special court here on Tuesday, they said. Ratul Puri was already under the probe scanner of the agency in connection with the high-profile AgustaWestland VVIP choppers corruption case and was facing a non-bailable warrant issued by a court after the ED submitted to it that the businessman might try to tamper with the evidence and influence witnesses "as he already did earlier". However, the Delhi High Court had on August 14 granted interim protection from arrest to Ratul Puri till Tuesday. The latest PMLA case emerges from a CBI FIR of August 17, where Ratul Puri, his father Deepak Puri, mother Nita (Nath's sister) and others were booked in connection with a Rs 354 crore bank fraud case filed by the Central Bank of India. The CBI had carried out multiple searches in pursuance of this FIR on Sunday. The Puri family, other individuals like Sanjay Jain and Vineet Sharma were booked by the CBI for alleged criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and corruption. Ratul Puri was booked in this case in his capacity as executive director of Moser Baer India Limited (MBIL), a firm promoted by his father Deepak Puri. The company is involved in the manufacture of optical storage media like compact discs, DVDs, solid-state storage devices. Ratul Puri had resigned from the post of executive director in 2012, while his parents continue to be on the board, the bank had said in a statement and compliant to the CBI. The company (Moser Baer) was taking loans from various banks since 2009 and went for debt restructuring a number of times, the bank has alleged in the complaint which is now part of the CBI FIR. When it was unable to pay the debt, a forensic audit was done and the account was declared as "fraud" by the Central Bank of India on April 20, 2019, it has alleged. "The MBIL has committed fraud and cheated the complainant bank thereby making a wrongful gain to themselves and a wrongful loss to the lender bank which is a custodian of public money," the complaint to the CBI said. The bank claimed that the company and its directors forged and fabricated documents to induce the Central Bank of India to release funds. "MBIL has caused unlawful loss to our bank to the tune of Rs 354.51 crore as on November 29, 2014, and interest thereon by getting unlawful gains," the complaint said. Ratul Puri is facing criminal investigation by three main central probe agencies, ED, CBI and the Income Tax department. The tax department has attached a number of his alleged 'benami' assets in the recent past and has charged him with benefiting from the purported kickbacks generated in the Rs 3,600 crore VVIP choppers deal case, cancelled by India in 2014 on charges of corruption. Pro Kabaddi: Vikas Kandola shines in Haryana Steelers win over U Mumba

The defence kept a high line, strangling U Mumba's opportunities to pick up Bonus Points, thereby forcing them to make mistakes while Vikas Kandola picked up the points with his raids in the other end. His three-point Super Raid 12 minutes into the match set the tone for the Haryana side, which inflicted an All-Out on U Mumba with three minutes remaining to half time. Steelers led 16-8 at half-time. In the second half, the introduction of raider Abhishek Singh by U Mumba brought about a change in the proceedings as his raids helped the team reduce the lead to just two points 10 minutes into the half. However, consecutive Super Tackles by Ravi Kumar and Chand Singh, along with a few errors in the Mumbai defence quickly widened the gap to 25-17 in favour of Haryana with seven minutes to the final whistle. Sandeep Narwal's raid for Mumbai with six minutes left on the clock, taking out Dharmaraj Cheralathan and Chand Singh, tilted the balance of the match once again and the subsequent all-out meant the gap was reduced to one point with less than three minutes remaining. But the push came a little too late for Mumbai as they succumbed to another defeat. People with HIV at increased risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Study

"By pooling data from different studies, we have been able to show for the first time that even with the rise in life expectancy amongst people living with HIV, this population now seems to be disproportionately affected by chronic illnesses often attributable to lifestyle issues such as smoking, drug and alcohol use or more commonly associated with an older population," said study researcher Lee Smith from Anglia Ruskin University in the UK. Although the number of people contracting HIV is declining, approximately 1.8 million people are infected every year and HIV remains one of the world's major health issues. In recent years, people with HIV have benefited from improved access to antiretroviral treatment. However, increased life expectancy and a lower immunity has meant higher levels of comorbidity, with people living with HIV also more likely to suffer from other illnesses. The greater prevalence of age-associated diseases may be explained by the persistent immunodeficiency and inflammation connected with HIV. There are also adverse effects associated with antiretroviral treatment. Previous studies have also suggested that people with HIV in developed countries, as a population, often exhibit greater risk factors associated with non-AIDS related illnesses, such as smoking, drug use and alcohol use. Pro Kabaddi: Bengaluru Bulls overcome Tamil Thalaivas 32-21 in Chennai opener

But, Bengaluru Bulls went into the halftime break 17-10. Ajith Kumar managed to get out of the grasp of Sehrawat and a brilliant foothold from Ran Singh meant Bengaluru's lead got narrowed down to just five as the teams resumed play. A failed do-or-die raid from Rohit Kumar, a back-kick from raiding Ajay Thakur, and a body grab from Mohit Chillar further reduced the deficit to 19-17. Their hopes of mounting a comeback, however, suffered a major letdown when Ankit touched two players in a single raid and Saurabh Nandal completed his 'High 5' to restore the seven-point lead. Tamil Thalaivas succumbed to another All-Out as Pawan Sehrawat completed another Super 10. The home side didn't show any signs of resurgence after that. With this win, Bengaluru Bulls moved to the second spot in the points table with 27 points from 8 matches. They take on Puneri Paltans on Wednesday, who are at the bottom of the table. BCCI bats for IDTM doctors in Nada

ccording to Salvi, all the IDTM doctors are MBBS. "We have requested that DCOs assigned for BCCI tests to be registered medical practitioners (MBBS) with knowledge of anti-doping. When IDTM used to collect samples, they would assign medical practitioners."Salvi and Saba Karim, BCCI's GM (cricket operations) recently met senior Nada officials, including director general Navin Agarwal, and discussed how to move ahead with the dope testing of the cricketers. "We have discussed everything threadbare. We have given the full fixtures for this season's domestic matches. The dates and venues also have been given. This will help Nada to prepare its cricket-testing calendar," he added. For the record, Nada had announced after the meeting it would be starting "the partnership from the Duleep Trophy." "The Duleep Trophy has already started and probably they will be coming for later matches. They haven't specified whether they are planning target testing or random testing. It is expected there will be a few tests done on match days (in-competition)," Salvi was quoted as saying by PTI.Nada's website says at present there are 111 empanelled contractual persons, including Lead Dope Control Officers (LDCOs), DCOs, blood collection officers (BCOs) and chaperones. On the list of 111, there are only 16 registered doctors - all designated as LDCOs. Out of those 16, there are 12 who are based out of Pune while four reside in Thiruvananthapuram. However, it remains to be seen whether Nada can always have qualified doctors as DCOs for all BCCI assignments. Ex-Sudan President admits of getting USD 90 Million received from Saudi Royals

Bashir faces a raft of charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide from the International Criminal Court over his role in the Darfur war but Monday's trial is over graft allegations. Large amounts of cash were found at this residence after he was toppled and the investigator said the case brought forward to the court probed some of that money. "The accused told us that the money was part of a sum of USD 25 million sent to him by Prince Mohammed bin Salman to be used outside of the state budget," investigator Ahmed Ali said. According to him, Bashir had said he also received two previous payments of USD 35 million and USD 30 million from Saudi King Abdullah, who died in 2015. "This money was not part of the state budget and I was the one who authorised its spending," the investigator quoted Bashir as saying. Bashir had said the Saudi money was exchanged and spent and that he could not remember how nor did he have documents providing further details, he added. Sudan's ex-president Omar al-Bashir was charged with corruption-related offenses on Sunday as he appeared in public for the first time since he was overthrown in April. Bashir looked calm during the nearly three-hour session, which an AFP photographer and correspondent attended. The next hearing was scheduled for August 24. Darfur crimes In May, Sudan's prosecutor general also said Bashir had been charged over killings during the anti-regime protests which eventually led to his ouster. London-based rights watchdog Amnesty International has warned however that the corruption trial should not distract from his Darfur indictments. "While this trial is a positive step towards accountability for some of his alleged crimes, he remains wanted for heinous crimes committed against the Sudanese people," Amnesty said. Amnesty urged the country's new transitional institutions to ratify the ICC's Rome Statute, a move that would allow for his transfer to the international tribunal. The Hague-based ICC has for years demanded that Bashir stand trial, and has renewed its call since his fall. The head of Bashir's defence team, Ahmed Ibrahim al-Tahir, said in July that the ousted leader's trial had no "political background". "It is an absolute criminal case with a baseless accusation." It was the sudden tripling of bread prices in December that sparked the mushrooming protests which led to the toppling of Bashir by the army in April. Sovereign Council The trial comes as the composition of the joint civilian and military sovereign council that will steer the country of 40 million through a 39-month transition was due to be unveiled on Monday. The line-up had been expected to be announced on Sunday but it was delayed after one of the five nominees put forward by the opposition alliance representing protest leaders turned down the job. The Transitional Military Council which took over from Bashir and will be dissolved by the creation of the sovereign said the announcement had been delayed at the request of the opposition. The composition of the new body is now expected on Tuesday. The ruling sovereign council will be composed of 11 members including six civilians and five from the military. It will be headed by a general for the first 21 months and by a civilian for the remaining 18 months. The council will oversee the formation of a transitional civilian administration including a cabinet and a legislative body. The transition's key documents were signed on Saturday at a ceremony attended by a host of foreign dignitaries, signalling that Sudan could be on its way to shedding the pariah status the Darfur atrocities and Bashir's international arrest warrant had conferred on it. Amidst the euphoria celebrating the promise of civilian rule, unease was palpable however within the protest camp that brought about one of the most crucial changes in Sudan's modern history. One of its main causes is the omnipresence in the transition of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, a paramilitary commander and one of the signatories of the documents, whose forces are blamed for the deadly repression of the protests. And it remains unclear how the transitional institutions will tackle the daunting task of pacifying a country plagued by several conflicts, including in the regions of Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile. ... 11-year-old trampled to death by elephant in Jharkhand's Gumla district

The elephant attacked the home from the side of the kitchen. The girl opened the door and tried to flee,' the DFO said, adding that since it was raining and there was no electricity in the village, she could not identify the location of the elephant and came in front of it. The elephant lifted her with its trunk and slammed her on the ground and trampled her to death, forest officials said. The villagers said Bhora Tirkey, Amrita's father, had heard the sound of the approaching elephant. 'As the elephant started pushing the wall from the kitchen side, Bhora opened the door for all family members in the house to flee. But while fleeing, Amrita reached near the elephant due to darkness,'a villager said. The villagers are living in panic, as the elephant moved towards the nearby forest. They fear that the jumbo might again raid the village on Sunday night. The forest department handed over Rs 20,000 to the victim's family. The remaining Rs 3.80 lakh will be credited in Bhora's account within two months, forest officials said. Indian women start with 2-1 win over Japan in Olympic test event

Both the teams, playing with 16 players as per the Olympic Games guidelines, made swift and timely substitutions throughout the match, and it was in the 16th minute that Japan's substitution worked for them. The 29-year-old Mitsuhashi combined well with her teammates before drawing parity. With the majority of the attacks coming from the Indian team, the Japanese sat back and looked to attack on the counter. The teams have played each other frequently in the past couple of years, which showed on the field as they understood each other's tactics well, and it meant that the teams went into the half-time break level at 1-1. The third quarter saw India dominate the initial few minutes and winning themselves another penalty corner in the 35th minute. A moment of magic from Gurjit saw India regain their one-goal advantage as the 23-year-old smashed the ball into the back of the net. The hosts tried to look for another equaliser in the remaining minutes, but could not convert their opportunities into goals. Lee Duck-hee becomes first deaf player to win an ATP main draw match

Don't repeat Tiananmen Square, US warns China Phone calls between both countries' deputies are planned for the next 10 days, and if those are successful, negotiations could resume, Trump's chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow said on Sunday. Hong Kong has meanwhile been dealing with more than two months of protests and on Sunday saw a crowd that organisers said numbered some 1.7 million people march peacefully in the city despite rising unrest and stark warnings from Beijing. Chinese state media has run images of military personnel and armored personnel carriers in Shenzhen, across the border from the semi-autonomous city. In the bloody 1989 crackdown in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, China deployed tanks to end student-led protests, resulting in an estimated death toll of hundreds if not thousands. If such a situation was repeated in Hong Kong, 'I think there'd be tremendous political sentiment not to do something,' Trump said, referring to the trade negotiations with China. Under a deal signed with Britain, China agreed to allow Hong Kong to keep its unique freedoms when the former crown colony was handed back in 1997. But many Hong Kongers feel those freedoms are being chipped away, especially since China's hardline president Xi Jinping came to power. Trump stopped short of endorsing the protesters, saying, 'I'd love to see it worked out in a humane fashion,' and calling on Xi to negotiate with the dissidents. Last week, China's state-run daily The Global Times said there 'won't be a repeat' of Tiananmen Square in a rare reference to the crackdown. Analysts say any intervention in Hong Kong by Chinese security forces would be a disaster for China's reputation and economy. The weeks of demonstrations have plunged the financial hub into crisis, with images of masked, black-clad protesters engulfed by tear gas during street battles against riot police stunning the semi-autonom-ous city once renowned for its stability. Sunday's march, billed as a return to the peaceful origins of the leaderless protest movement, was one of the largest rallies since the protests began about three months ago, according to organizers the Civil Human Rights Front. ... Read why there are no takers for this Bengaluru skywalk

However, residents staying close by and the school students of say they have not been benefitted by the overbridge, which was a result of a project drawn by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in 2008.The skywalk at the Palace Road-Sankey Road intersection was constructed at an estimated cost of `60 lakh, and inaugurated in 2010. However, only a handful of people use the footbridge, while hundreds of citizens use the stretch every day. "This skywalk is clearly unusable. It has nearly 120 steps to climb up and down, which indeed makes it difficult for children, especially if they are carrying school bags," Priya Chetty-Rajagopal, a resident of High Point Apartment on Palace Road, said. "The steps are also 9-inch high, making it worse.Because of these issues, most children take their life in their hands, and just cross the road. Senior citizens cannot even think of climbing it. In 2011, it was said that a lift will be installed, but it hasn't been made till date," she added. Students of Sophia's also admitted that most of them don't use the skywalk. "It is long, and we don't prefer it. It is better for us to walk and cross the road than to walk the long stretch. Many students just prefer to cross the road taking the help of traffic police personnel," a student said on condition of anonymity. Another student said, "It is difficult for us to climb so many steps. We take help from our seniors and cross the road." According to traffic expert Professor MN Srihari tough measures need to be taken in such situations. "We should suspend all the engineers of BBMP, since they are constructing skywalks where it is not even required. They claim that they are building it for pedestrians, but they choose places where advertisement hoardings are visible. The skywalks are expensive too. It is a sheer waste of money," he said.Chetty-Rajagopal also said the place comes under Zone A according to the advertisement by-law policy, which is considered a no-hoarding zone. "This is a no-hoarding zone but still many advertisements are put up.This skywalk is just used for displaying advertisements and nothing else," she added. CE tried contacting the BBMP officials multiple times, but they remained unreachable. 'Major milestone,' says ISRO chief as Chandrayan-2 makes it to lunar orbit

'Next major event would happen on September 2 when the lander would be separated from the orbiter. On September 3, we would have a small manoeuvre for about 3 seconds to ensure that the systems of the lander are running normally,' he added. Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) manoeuvre was completed successfully at 09:02 am as planned, using the onboard propulsion system, ISRO said in a statement. However, it was one of the tricky operations in the mission because if the satellite approached the Moon at a higher-than-expected velocity it would have bounced off into deep space. After successful insertion, ISRO would carry out four more orbit maneuvers (August 21, 28, 30 and September 1) to enter it into its final orbit. Subsequently, the Vikram lander would separate from the orbiter on September 2, 2019. '3 steps closer to Moon': ISRO after Chandrayaan 2's smooth third orbit raising Two orbit maneuvers would be performed on the lander before the initiation of powered descent to make a soft landing on the lunar surface on September 7, 2019, ISRO said. Chandrayaan-2, launched on July 22 by GSLV MkIII-M1 vehicle, had entered the Lunar Transfer Trajectory on August 14 after final orbit raising manoeuvre of the spacecraft was successfully carried out. ISRO keeps its date with moon, successfully launches Chandrayaan-2 This mission would shed light on a completely unexplored region of the Moon, its South Pole. Chandrayaan-2: Everything you need to know about India's Moon mission If successful, the mission will make India the fourth country to soft land a rover on the lunar surface after Russia, US and China. Father, son tune in together for a new album

"Ambi studied with me and has played and travelled with me. We have done some work together over the years, but haven't released it to the public. Both of us have been caught up with other projects which is why we haven't been able to. Post our live performance in Portugal when Ambi said, "Appa, we should release this multi-track as an album, I felt that it had come out well and thought we must go ahead with it," says Dr Subramaniam when we catch him ahead of his departure to the US for performances. It's been a proud moment for the renowned musician who says Ambi, who plays the violin, is taking his father, V Lakshminarayana's legacy ahead. "His roots lie in my father's style. He has his own interpretation and has added characteristics to it," says Dr Subramaniam, who is currently training and performing with his granddaughter Mahati Subramaniam -daughter of Bindu Subramaniam - who recorded her first solo song in 2018. The album from their recent joint performance in Portugal has songs with dark moods which differs from their previous tracks. According to the musicians, when it's a multi-track, it's possible to do a mix, and add characteristics to it - which is exactly what has been done with in this particular album. About the collaboration, Ambi says, "Live in Portugal is very special because it's the first Carnatic album my dad and I are releasing together in over a decade. It's been a long time since we had a chance to do a full album together and we're very excited to share this album with everyone." Kerala paying the price for ignoring warning signals

While ministers and senior officials focused their energies on the Rebuild Kerala initiative, little attention was paid to measures to prevent a repeat of the situation-or even to the fact that the reconstruction had to be done keeping the sustainability factor in mind. Desilting of rivers and water bodies was not taken up, canals were not cleared of rubbish, encroachments were allowed to stay, and mining and quarrying were allowed to continue as usual. Kerala was at the forefront of opposition to the Gadgil Committee's report that recommended various measures to protect the Western Ghats, including imposing restrictions on mining and quarrying activities, preventing the use of forest land for non-forest purposes and regulating constructions. While that report never got implemented, the state has been resisting even the one that came later-a "more practical" Kasturirangan Committee report. The fact is that the current disaster is largely man-made. The state government's attempts to blame it entirely on rains show its unwillingness to admit its mistakes. Following the latest disaster, there's a fresh clamour for implementing the Gadgil report. Better late than never. The government must at least now show the courage to stand up to various lobbies and do whatever it takes to prevent further damage to the environment. Or else, it should be prepared to face even greater catastrophes. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. A day after rain, residents of New Chandigarh area live in fear

'A bridge must be constructed on the road which connects Chandigarh-New Chandigarh-Kurali road. On Sunday, the causeway was not visible even due to high water level. In future the water could enter the housing complex,' Puri said. According to the district soil and water conservation department's report which was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, the department mentioned that the area usually receives 10 to 20 mm rain but during the intervening night of August 17/18, the area received 91 mm rain from 11.30 pm on August 17 to 8.30 am on August 18. Rajwant Sharma, another resident of the area, said that the construction of the new and elevated roads has stopped the natural flow of seasonal rivulets which resulted in flash floods on Sunday. Naggal village, where the flash flood had caused the maximum damage on Sunday, is still cut off from the rest of the area. The sarpanch of the village, Jagdish Singh, told Chandigarh Newsline that the road leading to the village was totally damaged and they could not go out of the village. Speaking about the damage caused due to the flood, Jagdish said that a total of 25 cattle head were washed away and on Monday they found 10 cattle head were dead while 15 were still missing. 'Two tractors and a pick-up vehicle were also washed away in the water currents. The tractors were recovered but they were damaged,' Jagdish told Chandigarh Newsline. Jagdish said that on Monday the students could not go to schools as the road was damaged. He also said that the senior officers, including Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan, visited the area but the relief works were yet to be done. Jagdish said, 'The entire village is keeping a vigil. We are also keeping an eye on the dam as in case of rain, there could again be a situation like flash flood.' DC Girish Dayalan told Chandigarh Newsline that they were keeping an eye on the check dams in the area. The area has a maximum of 15 check dams in the district which were constructed to stop the natural flow of seasonal rivulets to create water reservoirs. 'Why do some parents take kids for A-rated movies, against the rules?'

It's not about other patrons being disturbed by a kid running around or asking awkward questions in a film like Kabir Singh. It's not even about which moral camp you belong to. It's purely about the psychology of the child and how inappropriate content confuses or harms them. They soak in prevalent prejudices portrayed in the movie, without really knowing the complete picture. They can certainly pick up bad language and lewd gestures. Their young brain is not fully developed for managing certain emotional responses or understanding adult humour. They can get anxiety or nightmares after watching something scary. And more often than not, they can't articulate how they're feeling and why. Sonal Sood, a Delhi-based psychotherapist says, 'My views on the matter are that advisories for films must be taken seriously. Exposing children to inappropriate subject matter - violence, sexualised behaviour, gendered story lines, trauma - can all have lasting impact on a child. Some parents believe that small children don't know what's going on. This is often what parents say to themselves but children even as young as two are very aware. The visual medium is what children connect with. Their brains are wired to learn visually, so anything on a screen will impact them. Children internalise everything we expose them to and it becomes their inner voice to themselves and for the world around them. Disney Channel has humorously touched upon this tricky topic in their ad, urging parents to let their kids watch what's meant for kids. Often, parents take their children to movie halls due to lack of childcare at home or a lack of alternatives for family-friendly outings. Children don't need a lot to entertain themselves. We adults make their need for entertainment complex because it may seem boring and tedious to us parents, after a long day. Cinemas across the world stick to age advisories. It's sad that in a country where the censor board is so active, we are unable to enforce age guidelines. That said, it is a parent's responsibility to help their children understand what's age-appropriate for them. Parents need better information about child rearing and the importance of setting boundaries for a child. As it is, letting children be children is a huge challenge in an age where screens are so easily available to them.' Manga comics to Bigg Boss, watch the content your child is consuming Mahak Jain, an NRI residing in London, says, 'We are required to buy a full-price ticket for an adult and a child-price ticket for kids. That serves as a deterrent in itself. Plus, carrying IDs is essential, which are checked and if the movie is for 13 and older, a younger child simply won't be allowed inside. I have not been to the cinema hall for some time now because both my kids are still small and we don't have help to leave them with. My husband and I are happy to stream films online after tucking the boys into bed. Why are people not more aware, and why is it so difficult for the same rules to be enforced in India?' Overseas, the film ratings are decided by an association, keeping the current parental outlooks in mind. In India, the Central Board of Film Certification consists of a panel appointed by the central government, comprising people from various walks of life. They state that 'If the Board, having regard to the nature, content and theme of the film is of the opinion that it is necessary to caution the parents/guardian to consider as to whether any child below the age of twelve years maybe allowed to see such a film, the film shall be certified for unrestricted public exhibition with an endorsement to that effect.' Which means it will have the U/A certification. U-certified films mean suitable for family viewing, that is to say, the film shall be such that all the members of the family including children can view it together. To sum up, it's a bad idea to take kids for movies past their bedtime. Paediatricians strictly advise against screen time for children under two. Also, from a kid's point of view, it's torture to sit quietly through a full-length feature film, especially if it's of no interest to them. So the next time you watch a movie with your kid, keep their desire and readiness in mind as well. Jabariya Jodi movie review: Too wobbly to make any sense!

Based on the social issue of forced marriages that are common in Bihar and a few other cities of India too, the film could have been a fun ride all the way, only if it had humour thrown in for good measure. Instead, what we have is an over-hasty work ,offering us some of the glaring issues that constantly plague the film, and little respite. The story continues in the direction of a major crisis and an erratic climax with precious little hope. The Patna-based, supposedly cool dude Abhay Singh (Siddharth Malhotra), is a thug whose primary job of kidnapping young men and forcibly making them marry girls at the behest of his father Hukum Dev Singh (Javed Jaffrey) gets them huge amounts of cash in return. The grooms are miserably helpless and such, or the young girls too, who are not really happy — but who cares in a place where Hukum lives in a huge palace and everyone seems to bow down before him? For the father-son duo, by kidnapping hungry-for-dowry young men and compelling them to do marry against their will, is somewhat of a social service that they take pride in. Abhay too, doesn't think he does any wrong though. Passing off his crime as an act of valour, he continues to follow his dictatorial father's command, much to his mother's (Sheeba Chaddha) discomfort. In another part of the state, a young girl Babli (Parineeti Chopra), who happens to be Abhay's childhood love, decides to teach her boyfriend she was about to elope with, a lesson. She calls a television crew and records her beating him up live publicly when the boy ditches her at the eleventh hour. She becomes an overnight celebrity and the rebellious streak in her emboldens her further. When she and Abhay meet after a long gap, and needless to add, sparks fly, the two take off from they had left off many moons ago. It is Babli though, who seems to be enamoured of his charm more than Abhay, for whom Babli is just another girl he sleeps with. He gets cold feet and tries to convince himself that he is no longer in love with her: it was his confused state of mind that made him go along with the firebrand Babli, and make her feel special. When Babli feels jilted after Abhay's sudden turnaround, another her childhood best friends of hers, Santosh (Aparshakti Khurana), comes to her rescue. Thankfully, to mitigate the tension that leads to more confusion for the audience, she has one bright spot — Santosh. Someone who would stand up for her at all times. He is summoned hastily to tie the knot with her. He realises that Babli loves Abhay and the two are separated only because of their ego (Babli's) and self-doubt with a state of indecision (Abhay's) while Santosh is the only one who knows and comprehends what love entails. Writer Sanjeev Jha, like most of us, is familiar with the idea of an entire story having a feel of emotive content that abounds in dollops of confusion between lovers, a bit of parallel comic tracks, songs and dances, and a bitter opposition to call a two-hour-long film masala entertainment. But perhaps, cohesive storytelling is what he misses out on. As a result, his film is neither social commentary nor a comedy. Unable to decide where the story starts, or what happens to the characters for the duration of the film, and then how it all resolves (or doesn't resolve) before the screen fades to black and the credits roll, he is thrown off balance, and gives us a convoluted tale that is most unconvincing. Even if it had some great lines or performances, one would have enjoyed and called it a 'paisa wasool' mishmash of a film. The failure of the lead actors — both Chopra and Malhotra — to look satisfactorily credible in their respective roles, is yet another major drawback of the film. Malhotra looks too suave for a character who has grown up in Bihar. His Bihari accent slips every time he concentrates more on his looks (tatooed arms, flashy shirts, torn jeans). Why he does back off when he seems to be in love is never explained to us. He looks too self- assured to have any kind of commitment phobia. Chopra doesn't go beyond the standard one-expression look. It's a pity that the two, who starred in a rather offbeat and full of laughs Hasee Toh Phasee a few years ago, where both shone with a promise to deliver, can give us such a dud. Among the rest of the cast, the ones who are always dependable, and always manage to bring in their own appeal, suffer too. Sanjay Mishra, Javed Jaffrey, Sheeba Chaddha and Abhay's best friend Chandan Roy Sanyal have nothing significant to add to the dismal screenplay that consistently produces moments that induce a few chuckles, but not belly laughs. There's also a sentiment thrown in as an afterthought to the farcical humour at times, which adds to one's misery of sitting through such a film. Coming back to my point of the structure, while the main conflict has to get resolved, and the loose ends have to be tied up, the tension-filled denouement must also fall quickly. It looks as if Jha and two other writers credited for the screenplay knew from day one that they had to make a happy-ending-film about a serious subject like young men being bullied into matrimony but didn't know what all to fill in the in-between space with. What we finally get is a predictably clumsy and dispensable 144-minute film that collapses while attempting to figure out what genre to adopt! ... Corporate tax cut in phases

choing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, she said Indian wealth-creator entrepreneurs would be given all kinds of support. Modi in his annual address to the nation from the Red Fort on August 15 had extolled the role of wealth creators and said they must not be viewed with suspicion. "Let us never see wealth creators with suspicion. Only when wealth is created, wealth will be distributed," he had said.On tax collection, Sitharaman said tax administrators become facilitators and people who pay tax are treated with a lot of understanding.Redemption reserves off The government has removed the redemption reserve requirement for the issue of debentures by non-banking financial companies, housing finance companies and listed firms, a move aimed at reducing the cost of raising capital.Under the companies law, these entities raising money had to create a debenture redemption reserve (DRR) of 25 per cent of the value of outstanding debentures. For unlisted companies, the DRR requirement has been reduced to 10 per cent from 25 per cent of the outstanding debentures."The measure has been taken to reduce the cost of capital raised by companies through the issue of debentures and is expected to deepen the bond market," the corporate affairs ministry said. 'Happy sailing': Russian sailor's message in bottle found 50 years later

The note was dry,' he told the Nome Nugget newspaper. Ivanoff posted a picture of the bottle and the note on Facebook on August 5. But the yarn doesn't end there. Rossiya 1, a Russian television network, tracked it by its return address in Vladivostok to a retired Soviet ship captain now living in Crimea. Anatoly Botsanenko, interviewed by the station in a naval uniform, said he served on the Sulak in 1969 when he was 35. Peering at the message on the reporter's smartphone, Botsanenko said, 'That's not my handwriting.' But he then recognized the return address as his old home in Vladivostok. 'It's pretty cool how a small photo grew into a story,' Ivanoff posted on Facebook. (This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Regular exercise may cut Alzheimer's risk in older adults

In the second study, researchers studied 95 people, also from the registry, who were given scores called polygenic risk scores, based on whether they possessed certain genes associated with Alzheimer's. Similarly, the third study examined MRIs from 107 individuals from the registry who were asked to run on a treadmill to determine their oxygen uptake efficiency slope, a measure of aerobic fitness. Participation in the registry included an initial assessment of biological, health and lifestyle factors associated with the disease and follow-up assessments every two to four years. All participants completed a questionnaire about their physical activity and underwent neuropsychological testing and brain scans to measure several biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's disease. The researchers compared data from individuals younger than 60 years with older adults and found a decrease in cognitive abilities as well as an increase in biomarkers associated with the disease in older individuals. However, the effects were significantly weaker in older adults who reported engaging in the equivalent of at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week. "The most interesting part of our research is that we now show evidence that lifestyle habits - in this case regular, moderate exercise - can modify the effect of what is commonly considered a non-modifiable risk factor for Alzheimer's, in this case, aging," Okonkwo said. "Overall, these studies suggest that the negative effect of aging and genetic risk on Alzheimer's' disease biomarkers and cognition can be lessened in physically active, older adults at risk for the disease compared with their less active peers." A twist in the Addams Family tale: Recharge by Rachel Lopez

But before the new animated movie comes out this year, consider an oddball spinoff of this oddball show. The 2015 web series Adult Wednesday Addams imagines Morticia and Gomez's daughter (pasty, scowling, braided, but otherwise all grown up) living in Los Angeles. It's hilarious. Wednesday stands out, of course — who wears black in sunny LA? But the city is so full of flakes, she also fits right in. Over 13 episodes, each only a few minutes long, she finds roommates, aces a job interview (despite satanic references) and meets guys. She even finds time to visit the hairdresser. 'I think this chair is broken. I am feeling no electricity,' Wednesday deadpans as she takes a seat. Melissa Hunter, who created the series and plays Addams, gives Wednesday a sharpness that's missing from the official versions. Grown-up Wednesday throws shade at every vacuous LA stereotype. There's the bimbo who refuses to clean up after her dog, the reality-TV starlet trying to order underlings around, the photographer at the hipster flea market, taking in her funereal look and asking, 'Who are you wearing?' 'It's faux,' says Wednesday, pointing to her beige bag. 'I don't have the budget for real human skin.' Underneath that prissy vintage frock, Wednesday is a hero. She deals with one-night stands and anti-abortion activists. She intimidates catcallers and refuses to be bullied. When she's babysitting one little girl, the kid worries there's a ghoul in her bedroom cupboard. 'Monsters don't prey on boring children,' Wednesday says. 'Real monsters prey on real monsters. As long as you never become a real monster, you never have to fear them.' Hunter's series garnered over 12 million views and 2.7 lakh subscribers before a copyright-infringement complaint from The Addams Family creators got her to take it off YouTube. You can stream them on ItsMelissaHunter.com. And maybe drop her a line requesting more adventures? Pathway to $5-trillion dream

But when we have in five years (of BJP rule) added $1 trillion as compared to $2 trillion size achieved in 70 years of Independence, then this target is achievable," he said, while addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 73rd Independence Day.Modi said political stability through a massive mandate for his government alongside predictable policy provides a unique opportunity for India to grow. "The country shouldn't lose this opportunity," he said adding that his government has provided high growth while keeping inflation at a low rate.He referred to reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) for aiding the growth process and said the government will invest Rs 100 lakh crore in building modern ports, highways, railways, airports, hospitals and educational institutions. He said reforms will continue to be ushered in to help India break into Top 50 countries on the "ease of doing business" ranking. "The target is to break into top 50 nations," he said. The Prime Minister said the era of policy paralysis has ended and his government was giving policy-based governance that has helped catapult the country from the 142nd place among 190 nations on the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking in 2014 to 77th position this year.Reforms will continue and procedures would be further eased to make it easier for companies to do business in the country, he said adding that efforts are on to increase the size of the economy to $5 trillion. The country's economic growth accelerated in the first few years of Modi 1.0 regime, even breaching 8 per cent in 2016 and 2017, and the government was able to push through major reforms, including the introduction of a harmonised goods and services tax. But the growth rate has since then slowed to a five-year low of 5.8 per cent in January-March 2019, consumer confidence has waned and foreign direct investment has plateaued. Entrepreneurs have voiced frustrations with regulation and the high cost of capital. The Prime Minister, however, sought to allay concerns saying the fundamentals of the economy are strong, with low inflation and a potential to boost exports. For entrepreneurs and businessmen, he said wealth creators must be respected and they should not be seen with suspicion. "Let us never see wealth creators with suspicion. Only when wealth is created, wealth will be distributed," he said. "Wealth creation is absolutely essential. Those who create wealth are India's wealth and we respect them." This is the third time in one year that Modi has stood up for corporates. In July last year, Modi had stated that he was not scared to be seen with industrialists as his conscience was clear and that they too had contributed to the development of the country. In October 2018, he had stated that he does not believe in the culture of criticising the industry. Corporates, he believes, are doing exemplary social work alongside their business. He said the world is eager to trade with India. "Over the years we watched people making India a market (for their products). We too should reach the markets of the world. Why can't every district be an export hub?... If we aim for the global markets and make local products attractive, it will give employment to our youth." Ranchi to host 6km promotional on cycling

ccording to a 2014 survey by the Institute of Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), use of shared autos (diesel and battery operated) in Ranchi was at 28 per cent, while operation of buses constitutes a meagre 5 per cent of the share of public transport. On an average, 800 people are using the app-based public bicycle sharing platform a day, said Shashi Ranjan, manager of Chartered Bike, the Ahmedabad-based firm that launched the initiative in Ranchi."Earlier, 1,500 people would use the bicycles a day. But due to the monsoon, usage has slipped to 800 per day. However, with more awareness people's interest will increase," he said, explaining the rational behind an event like Cyclothon. At the event, cyclists will display Hindi slogans like, "Azadi pradushan se, azadi traffic jam se, sankalp le cycle chalane ka, desh ko swachh evam pradyushan mukt banana ka (Freedom from pollution, freedom from traffic jams, take the pledge to opt for cycle and make the country clean and pollution free)."Ranjan said they were organising such an event for the first time. "So far, we have got confirmation from 15 cyclists. They will be provided with T-shirts and the banners. Since it is a promotional event, the rides will be free," he said. The Cyclothon, of 6km, will commence at 7am from Albert Ekka Square (on Main Road) and traverse through major intersections like Lalpur, Dangratoli, St Xavier's College square, Iqra Masjid and culminate at Big Bazaar (opposite Ranchi Club). The first phase of the app-based initiative was launched in March with 600 German-made cycles. As many as 60 docking stations were set up along two routes, namely, Kanke Road-Chandni Chowk-Suchana Bhawan-Main Road and Kokar-Lalpur-Circular Road-Kutchery Chowk-Morabadi. Chartered Bike is ready to launch the second phase with 600 more bicycles and is currently carrying out a survey to set up more docking stations."The second phase will have cycles on routes between Karamtoli Chowk to Kokar via Booty More, Ratu Road to Project Bhawan via Shahjanand Chowk, Argora Chowk and Birsa Chowk, Birsa Chowk to Main Road and Shahjanand Chowk to Main Road via Kadru. We are ready with the bicycles and will soon start construction of docking stations after completing the survey," said a company official. Ranjan referred to the initial hiccups they faced when people began parked their motorbikes at docking stations, thereby defeating the very purpose of the cycle-sharing initiative."Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) had deputed guards to ensure that people do not park their bikes at our docking stations. But we would like more stringent measures to prevent illegal parking at our docking stations," Ranjan noted. The Chartered Bike app is available on both Android and iOS platforms. There is a subscription fee, Rs 35.40 a day, Rs 236 a month and Rs 1,180 a year. There is a nominal user charge of Rs 5, but the first 30 minutes are free. Those who do not have access to smartphones can buy tickets and use the cycles. Pakistan govt to hold meeting to chalk out future course of action on Kashmir

This came after the UNSC held a closed-door consultation on Kashmir. The meeting was called by China on the behest of Pakistan. However, the China-Pakistan axis failed tonight at UNSC closed-door meeting when a majority of the Council members refused to take up the Kashmir matter and rejected the Chinese position. China and Pakistan stood isolated as a member after member refused to endorse their position. When asked whether Pakistan is ready for dialogue with India, 'Pakistan has always pushed for engagement and a peaceful resolution. The foreign minister there is no chance of bilateral talks until the curfew is lifted in Kashmir'. ...
