Nandita Mahtani designs cartoon-inspired line, thrilled to face creative challenges
'This collection is an amalgamation of all things fun with exclusive elements designed in true Nandita Mahtani style. These creatively designed pieces feature pop-art and depict the iconic and widely popular Cartoon Network Originals series like the Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Samurai Jack, Courage the Cowardly Dog and Dexter.' She said the capsule collection includes 40 versatile pieces which will be launched in the first quarter of 2019, followed by an affordable ready-to-wear line. 'Each of the silhouettes is a mix of playful elements that have come together through intricate hand embroidery, sequins, beads and embellishments in vibrant colours. As part of the collection, I have added silhouettes such as slip dresses and skirts. However, they also include fun and multi-purpose pieces such as bomber, zipper and denim jackets, sweatshirts,' said Mahtani. 'What's going to be different is that this will be the first time that I will be designing an exclusive range of kids' apparel followed by a men's collection that will launch in the latter part of 2019,' she added. The designer has made a mark in the resort wear segment and has also introduced some trends in evening cocktail and holiday wear. Her label Nandita Mahtani spells feminine styles that are easy to wear for today's woman. Is the association with Cartoon Network a step to broaden her horizon from just ramp designing? 'Well, for me, it's never just been fashion designing. It's the creative challenge that keeps me going be it for my label, styling projects or interior designing. 'Having completed multiple interior designing projects, to styling Virat (Kohli) for six years now and with my label completing 15 years in 2019 - I am absolutely thrilled that I wake up having to challenge my creative side every day,' said Mahtani. She is the first designer with whom Cartoon Network has associated in India. So what all aspects she has kept in mind while making this line? 'For this collection, the most important aspect that I kept in mind was to bring out the characteristics and appeal of each character rather than making them just look the part. I didn't want the pieces to end up looking like just another cartoon inspired collection. So, it was extremely important for me to add that fun element of each of the characters into the designing process. 'Another significant factor while designing this capsule collection was the audience we were targeting - the young adult females that are from 16 plus to 40 years. Given they grew up watching these cartoon characters, it was essential for me to create the feeling of nostalgia. I have paid immense attention to the strengths and weaknesses of each character and how they emote through their eyes. 'For me, it was absolutely vital that the wearer must enjoy and have fun in experimenting with the pieces and I am thrilled to see the output and only hope that women will enjoy wearing it as much as I enjoyed designing it,' said the designer. Apart from this association, Mahtani is currently looking forward to the 15-year celebrations of her label. 'I am also working towards the launch of the Spring Summer 2019 collection of my second brand Love Gen, whilst completing a few interior and styling projects,' said the designer. She finds it is extremely important for designers to explore different lifestyle spaces. 'Anything that has a creative element attached to it - I will take it up, similar to my career choices. Be it fashion, interiors or styling - my creativity is put to test daily which is what excites me. What's also amazing is that I have the opportunity of borrowing from each of my professions when it comes to inspiration - given they are co-related,' she said. Air pollution: One step forward, two steps back
The most obvious, however, is that relative progress on one front in the fight against air pollution - in this case, the greater use of renewable sources of energy - has resulted in complacency on others, as has been made clear by the report. This, tellingly, amounts to ignoring the multi-layered nature of the problem of air pollution - a luxury that India can ill-afford - and also points to the political inertia that fuels such degradation. The Bharatiya Janata Party claims, as is evident from Mr Vardhan's suggestion, that things are improving in India. But there is also deterioration. The usual contributors to pollution, such as industry emissions, construction activity, diesel generators and toxic fumes from transport vehicles, have now expanded to include the burning of agricultural stubble, which has now been recognized as a key cause for the rapidly worsening air quality. Given that the practice persists in spite of an apex court order to offer subsidized machinery to farmers and gram panchayats, it becomes clear that the problem is not merely one of implementation - it is also one of sensitization. Unless education and adequate awareness initiatives accompany governmental investments in combating air pollution, the health - and lives - of citizens shall continue to be at risk. 1677820 Dailyhunthttps://able2know.org/user/jiddusiddhus/
PhD aspirant in Lucknow seeks 'mercy killing' over delay in BBAU admission
'While we are waiting for admission, classes in other departments of PhD have already started,' he said. Arun has already qualified for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) that expires on March 2019. But if he does not get admission to PhD, his fellowship money would be discontinued. Many other PhD aspirants said they were getting restless due to delay in the admission process. 'Our academic career hangs in balance,' they lamented. The candidates gave a representation to vice-chancellor NMP Verma and other university officials demanding immediate attention to the problem. The students claimed this is not the first time they gave a reminder to university officials. 'In the past too, we had requested the department to expedite the PhD admission work. But it did not evoke positive response. We are on the brink of losing an academic year because of laidback attitude of teachers,' said a student. Vice-chancellor NMP Verma said there is some technical problem in the history department that will take two months to be sorted out. Dean of School for Ambedkar Studies of Social Sciences, Ripu Sundan Singh said, 'We are aware about the students' problem. It happened due to some lapses within the department.' 'The departmental research committee will meet again and hopefully the issue will be resolved,' said the V-C. Dailyhunthttps://www.edocr.com/user/jeffbeccossamazon7
Heavy on runs and 100s, CAC seeks clarity on role
he iconic Kapil Dev, Shanta Rangaswamy and Aunshuman Gaekwad (who are on the five-member steering committee for setting up a Players' Association) are on the ad hoc committee, which actually has no locus standi.Rai, Johri and Saba Karim should be knowing that. In fact, the Board's acting secretary, Amitabh Choudhary, has formally questioned the ad hoc committee's legitimacy through an email on Monday.Expect more twists and turns. Top guns Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, members of the runs & hundreds-packed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, have sought "clarity" on their "role" and "responsibilities."Well-placed sources of The Telegraph informed that Laxman sent a "courteous" email on that and related issues, on behalf of all three members, to the two Supreme Court-appointed Administrators. The email was sent a "couple of days ago" in response to a request from Administrators Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji that the CAC "select" the next head coach of the India women's team.Owing to the "short notice" and "prior commitments," Sachin and his colleagues declined to be involved in the process. The Board has, through an advertisement, sought applications by 5.00 pm on Friday. Interviews would be conducted on December 20. According to the new Constitution of the Board, which has already been registered, the CAC alone has the responsibility to choose the national selectors and the coaching staff of both the men's and women's teams.Sachin and his colleagues were hand-picked by the late Jagmohan Dalmiya during his brief second innings as the Board president. That was well over three years ago. All along, neither the CAC's responsibilities nor roles were defined. Ramesh Powar's tenure is over, but T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana have appealed that the former India off-spinner be brought back. Mithali Raj, the ODI captain, holds a different view. Apparently, Board CEO Rahul Johri (who was at the centre of a very recent inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment) and GM Syed Saba Karim are toeing the Mithali line.Neither Johri nor Saba Karim is known to function without Rai's okay, so it's assumed that the chief Administrator isn't at all in favour of again having Powar on board. Why not?Word is that Diana, with good reasons, is sympathetic towards Powar. In any case, when Harmanpreet and Smriti have endorsed Powar in such strong terms, why not offer him a fresh contract? If Virat Kohli could have his way with Ravi Shastri's appointment as the head coach (he'd earlier been the team director) in July 2017, then why not Harmanpreet and Smriti? Not long ago, by the way, the CAC had declined to fill a vacancy in the junior selection committee. Sachin had a "conflict of interest" on account of son Arjun, while Laxman was honest enough in accepting that he hadn't been following cricket at the juniors' level too closely. Sourav, it seems, did not reply to an email from the Administrators. Back to Laxman's email...From what one understands, Laxman wrote:A) The CAC's "inability" to participate in the "process" of the selection of the next head coach.B) "Request" for adequate "prior notice" to the CAC in such matters.C) An appeal that the CAC's "scope of role and responsibilities" be spelt out to ensure "clarity" in functioning.D) That the clarity issue had been "pending" since the CAC was constituted.E) Reinforced a "commitment" on the part of the CAC to "work for the development of the sport" and to do so on an "honorary basis."Clearly, the "honorary basis" bit needs to be highlighted and all three - Sachin, Sourav and Laxman - must be applauded. Pakistan to introduce 'sin' tax on cigarettes, sugary beverages
That sum will be diverted to the health budget," PTI quoted Kiani as saying. Sin tax is not a new concept and is charged in over 45 countries, including India. Sin taxes are imposed to discourage consumers from using products known to harm public health and well-being. They are usually put in the top bracket of the tax collection regime, varying from place to place, to make the product so expensive for the user forcing him to relinquish the habit. The fund collected from these taxes goes into other welfare schemes. In countries such as the UK, US, and Canada, sin taxes are levied on a series of products and services, including alcohol, tobacco, gambling, lotteries, sugary beverages and at some places on vehicles running on diesel. In India, sin tax is levied prominently on tobacco and alcohol. Dr Asad Hafeez, the director general of the NHS Ministry, told Dawn, "The United States charges about $1.5 (approximately Rs 200) per pack of cigarettes, while the UK charges 40 pence (around Rs 100) per litre of sugary beverages as a Sin Tax. Thailand, as well as a number of other countries, has similar taxes that are earmarked for healthcare services." "We have not yet decided on the exact amount for a sin tax (in Pakistan)," he said, but hinted that "it will certainly be a handsome amount." "Some 1,500 youngsters start smoking in Pakistan every day, and we want to reduce that number," he added. In Pakistan, tobacco causes some 108,800 deaths every year, which is close to 298 per day. Various health organisations in Pakistan have been demanding the imposition of this tax from some time. Sanaullah Ghumman, the general secretary of one such organisation called Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), said that his association had for many years been demanding the imposition of a sin tax. "Recently, during a meeting with President Dr Arif Alvi, we again raised the issue of such a tax," he said. "The minister for health was also present at the meeting, and the president assured us that he would do what was possible," PTI quoted him as saying. How Pakistan reacted The news received mixed reaction on social media, where some people hailed the proposal while some had reservations over it being termed as 'Gunnah'. Leading the pack of dissenters was Federal Minister for Water Resources Faisal Vawda, who though welcomed the move, showed his reservations with it being called 'Gunnah Tax'. "I'm a chain cigarette smoker myself and I appreciate all the measures taken by the government to discourage smoking and I understand it's injurious to health but this term "Gunnah Tax" is inappropriate. If this is gunnah then what would we name and term the actual gunnahs," Vawda wrote on Twitter.

Not only Vawda, but many others thought in the same vein.
Thats fine, but why call it "sin tax"? They might as well call it "dozakh tax". https://t.co/WzweIWK1Nb
- Kasim Gilani (@KasimGillani) December 5, 2018
This "gunnah tax" is yet again another opportunity to start vetting your acquaintances.
The STUPIDEST of the lot will fixate on whether cigarette smoking is a sin or not.
- Mangogh (@ManhattanMango) December 4, 2018
But there was some positive word as well.
O Khuda k Bandon, SIN TAX is a general Term used for Taxes on such items that are generally considered hazardous to health.Taxes on items like cigarettes , liquor etc are regarded as "Sin Tax" ACROSS THE GLOBE ..so relax..those who consume such items are ALY paying Sin tax
