Anti-Modi banner arrests in Lucknow

Jumlebaazi ka naam Modi, Hindutva ka brand Yogi (Modi symbolises false promises, Yogi is the brand for Hindutva)," read the banners, which the police had brought down after receiving complaints from the civic body and BJP leaders."We have arrested (labourers) Sumit Kumar and Mohammad Ikramuddin for putting up the banners, and Manish Agrawal of Sheela Enterprises for printing them. The computer on which the banners had been designed has been seized," said circle officer Abhay Kumar Mishra.Sarvesh Mishra, additional superintendent of police, said: "We have formed several teams to arrest Jani."An employee of Sheela Enterprises, which prints only posters and banners and is owned by Agrawal, said: "We print banners and posters every day and know very well what is legal and what is not. There was nothing objectionable (in the Modi banners). Criticising the Prime Minister is not a crime. Besides, we didn't criticise anybody, we only printed the banners."A video clip released on Wednesday evening purportedly shows Jani justifying the banners and saying he has committed no crime."Modi has betrayed us. We have convened a religious parliament in Lucknow on February 10 to condemn him," a voice says.Jani's immediate grudge against Modi seems to be the BJP's defeats in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.Jani had been arrested in 2016 for allegedly threatening to kill then JNU students Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid, who had been arrested on sedition charges. He is out on bail and the case is pending. He also faces a case over the beheading of a Mayawati statue at the Ambedkar Memorial in Lucknow.Lucknow district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma issued a notice on Thursday saying: "Those who put up banners and posters at public places without permission willbe liable for punishment under the Defacement of Public Property Act, and a fine of Rs 50,000 will be realised from them." 1678546 Dailyhunthttps://www.theverge.com/users/rajeevkankala

"The result of no zilla parishad member (ZPM) seat has been declared yet," Bora said. There are 420 ZPM seats. He said counting would continue throughout the night and the final result is expected by Thursday afternoon.Altogether 734 candidates were declared uncontested, including two ZPM, 18 APM, seven GPP and 707 GPM. Of these 1,468 candidates, 380 are from the BJP, 193 from the Congress, 28 from the AGP, 10 from the AIUDF, one from the CPM, five from the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) and 117 Independents.BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said the trend shows that the people of the state still have full faith on the Sarbananda Sonowal government. In the last panchayat poll in Assam in 2013, that was held under the previous Congress government, the Congress had won the maximum number of seats.Bora said counting of votes was going on smoothly but there was commotion outside a couple of counting centres because of a huge gathering of people.Voting for the panchayat poll was held in two phases on December 5 and 9, which recorded an overall voter turnout of 82 per cent. Repolling was held in 95 booths, including 16 in Karimganj district on Wednesday which passed off peacefully and registered over 65 per cent voting. Repoll in these 16 booths could not be held along with 23 others in the district on Tuesday because of non-printing of ballot papers. Police, however, had to resort to mild lathicharge in front of MMC Girls' School in Karimganj, where counting is on, to disperse "unruly" supporters of candidates who were protesting against delay in start of counting. In Karimganj, the Congress was leading in nine of the 20 ZPMs and the BJP in five till 6pm. The Congress was leading in four of the 95 APMs. Of the 95 GPP seats, the Congress was leading in five and the BJP in four. Of the 950 GPM seats, the Congress was leading in 30 while the BJP and the AIUDF were leading in 30 and two respectively. In Hailakandi district, of the 11 ZPM seats, the AIUDF, the BJP and the AGP were leading in five, four and two respectively. The BJP has won 29 GPMs, six GPPs and seven APMs while the Congress has won one each in APM and GPP seats. Independents have won 95 GPM, four GPP and two APM seats. In Cachar, counting proceeded slowly. No trend was available in 27 ZPMs till 6pm. Of its 162 GPP seats, the BJP has won four and the Congress one. Of the 162 APM seats, the BJP and the Congress have won three each. Of the 1,620 GPMs, the BJP won 19 and the Congress 25 seats. An apple a day

Apples are abundantly found in markets and orchards during winter, and are delicious not only by themselves but also in various dessert preparations. Who can resist the wonderful aroma of freshly-baked apple pie? Apples also have significant nutritional value. However, in many marketplaces these days, apples are covered in wax in order to give them a false sheen of freshness. Buyers must be careful to check the fruits before purchasing, and wash them well before consumption.Malini Bose, Calcutta Food for thoughtSir - The article, "Routes to memory" (Dec 7), by G.N. Devy, is thought-provoking. The philosophies of the Buddha, Mahavir and M.K. Gandhi, which are all founded on the ideas of truth and non-violence, will always remain relevant. However, it is the idea of non-violence on which greater emphasis should be put. 'Truth' is often subjective; violence, on the other hand, is more real and cannot be justified in any way. The whole of the human race is affected by violence in varying degrees, be it in the form of domestic violence or lynchings. Therefore, the philosophy of non-violence must be combined with that of compassion and forgiveness. Only when we learn to forgive and empathize with others do we truly become non-violent, in both thought and action. Tejesh Vyas,Howrah Sir - In his article, G.N. Devy reminds us that M.K. Gandhi's call for civil disobedience and his preaching of non-violence were diametrically opposite to Hitler's demand for complete obedience and his promotion of violence. Indeed, we must always remember that while the former's approach sowed the seeds of democracy, the latter created a dictatorship. Dictatorship does not always begin after a military coup or a violent seizure of power by a group. It can slowly grow from inside a democratic country. A leader of a democracy, however, cannot become a dictator as long as democratic institutions exist. Thus, there have been many times in history when leaders, after being democratically elected, start undermining these institutions. This is followed by a gradual moulding of the constitutions of the countries in question so that the leaders can enjoy absolute power. A democracy cannot survive if its institutions are undermined. It thrives on debate and dialogue, and relies upon its major arms - the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, and financial, investigative and educational institutions - working with transparency. Most important for a democratic nation, however, is its constitution. Its ideals of liberty and equality must always be protected. Sujit De,Calcutta Sir - G.N. Devy's article reiterates the power of protest through literature. Literature has, through the centuries, inspired voracious readers to bring about change, be it Karl Marx in Germany, Michel Foucault in France, Che Guevara in Argentina or Rabindranath Tagore in India. Censorship of literature must be unequivocally condemned. However, significant sections of Indians do not share Devy's favourable views of M.K. Gandhi. They view him as a proponent of the politics of appeasement. Kingsukh Som, Kolhapur Certain victorySir - The manner in which Bangladesh demolished the West Indies in the recently-concluded two-match Test series must be lauded ("Innings victory for Bangla", Dec 3). The hosts dominated the visitors in both batting and bowling. Bangladesh piled up the runs, and the West Indies - easily the more experienced team - fell like ninepins. The performances of Taijul Islam and the skipper, Shakib-al Hasan, helped Bangladesh reach a comfortable total. Bowlers such Islam and Nayeem Hasan made the Windies succumb. One had hoped that the West Indies would bounce back after the humiliating defeat against India, but they remained hamstrung on account of a lack of promising players. They will have to take stock of their performances in all formats of the game if they are to regain their former glory.Jayanta Datta,Hooghly Dailyhunthttps://diigo.com/0dij8i

ISL 2018: Bengaluru a goal too good for ATK

Bengaluru extended their lead at the top of the table to six points ahead of the international break and preserved their unbeaten start to the season, while ATK remain sixth with 11 points from 12 matches and without a win in six matches. The teams started with urgency that resulted in openings at both ends. Kean Lewis dribbled past Ankit Mukherjee and crossed for Sunil Chhetri in the box but the India international shot wide. Within minutes, Ricky Lallawmawma found Jayesh Rane's run into the box from the left flank and the Indian winger's shot was blocked by Nishu Kumar. Things heated up as ATK denied space for Bengaluru to freely operate in midfield and the tackles started flying in as the half progressed. In the 19th minute, ATK's Gerson Vieira laid the ball for Everton Santos who sent a powerful shot towards Gurpreet Singh's goal. The Indian goalkeeper got his body behind the effort and saved. Bengaluru took the lead in the 37th minute following a period of consistent pressure. Udanta Singh won possession on the right and Bengaluru switched play over to Kean Lewis on the left who played an exquisite cross into the centre of the box. Paartalu sneaked in between John Johnson and Andre Bikey, leapt above the pair and glanced a header into the net. Two minutes into the second half, ATK striker Balwant Singh ghosted in behind the Bengaluru centre-backs to latch on to a long free-kick from the visitors' own half. Despite a head start over the defenders, Balwant was dispossessed inside the box with a brilliant recovery tackle by Juanan before the striker could get a shot away. The Bengaluru defence was caught watching the ball again as Manuel Lanzarote swung a free-kick into the box in the 57th minute. Balwant Singh moved into the space between the defence and the goalkeeper but blasted his effort over the crossbar from five yards. ATK went close again in the 68th minute when John Johnson's through-ball from the back released Balwant into space behind the hosts' backline. The Indian striker dribbled into the box and struck a low shot that rolled just inches wide of the goal. Udanta Singh could have doubled his team's lead in the 73rd minute. Dimas Delgado threaded a well-timed through-ball for the Indian winger who skipped past Lallawmawma, dribbled into the box but sliced his effort wide. Despite a concerted effort from ATK to sneak in an equaliser in the closing stages, Bengaluru remained firm at the back to win all three points. Dailyhunthttps://itsmyurls.com/zeevakeeno

Unfair to call Vijay Mallya thief for one loan default: Nitin Gadkari

40 saal baad jab wo aviation mein gaya....uske baad wo adchan mein aaya to woh ekdum chor ho gaya?...jo pachaas saal byaaj bharta hai wo theek hai, par ek baar wo default ho gaya...toh turant sab fraud ho gaya? Ye mansikta theek nahi hai." (For 40 years Mallya was regularly paying interest on loans. After entering the aviation sector, he started facing problems, and suddenly he became a thief? If a person repays the interest for 50 years, and if he defaults once, then suddenly everything is fraud? This mindset is not correct), Gadkari said at an economic summit organised by the Times Group. Gadkari said the loan he was referring to was from the Maharashtra government-owned entity Sicom to Vijay Mallya, extended 40 years ago, which he repaid on time without any default. Stating that ups and downs are part and parcel of any business, the road transport minister said if someone goes through a downward cycle, then he or she has to be supported. "There are risks in the business, be it banking or insurance, there are ups and downs. But, if the mistakes are bona fide, because of global or internal factors in the economy like a recession, then that person who is facing difficulties must be given support," the minister said. Likening an election loss to a business failure, he recalled how he lost an election when he was all of 26, but underlined that the loss did not mean that his political career ended. "If Nirav Modi or Vijay Mallyaji has committed (financial) fraud then send them to jail, but whoever comes in distress, and if we label them as fraudster then our economy will not progress," he said. Earlier this week, a London court had ordered Vijay Mallya's extradition, in a major boost to the government's efforts to bring back the fugitive businessman. Ahead of the extradition hearing, the 62-year-old former boss of the now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines offered to repay the entire principal amount to banks. Gadkari has for long been calling for a more considerate and realistic approach to NPAs, and indirectly blamed the bankers for the NPA mess, saying our banking system is such that it does not support sick companies. "When someone is serious then we put him/her in an ICU, but our banking system first puts a sick company in the ICU and then ensures that it dies," he said. Last month, Gadkari had blamed the RBI for "complicating" project finance, saying over 150 projects involving over Rs 2 trillion investments are struggling to get financial closure. "Unfortunately, many times ...the circulars issued by the RBI are creating more complications and this is one of the reasons why I am facing problems as far as financial closure is concerned," Gadkari had said. ... Heavy on runs and 100s, CAC seeks clarity on role

he iconic Kapil Dev, Shanta Rangaswamy and Aunshuman Gaekwad (who are on the five-member steering committee for setting up a Players' Association) are on the ad hoc committee, which actually has no locus standi.Rai, Johri and Saba Karim should be knowing that. In fact, the Board's acting secretary, Amitabh Choudhary, has formally questioned the ad hoc committee's legitimacy through an email on Monday.Expect more twists and turns. Top guns Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, members of the runs & hundreds-packed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, have sought "clarity" on their "role" and "responsibilities."Well-placed sources of The Telegraph informed that Laxman sent a "courteous" email on that and related issues, on behalf of all three members, to the two Supreme Court-appointed Administrators. The email was sent a "couple of days ago" in response to a request from Administrators Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji that the CAC "select" the next head coach of the India women's team.Owing to the "short notice" and "prior commitments," Sachin and his colleagues declined to be involved in the process. The Board has, through an advertisement, sought applications by 5.00 pm on Friday. Interviews would be conducted on December 20. According to the new Constitution of the Board, which has already been registered, the CAC alone has the responsibility to choose the national selectors and the coaching staff of both the men's and women's teams.Sachin and his colleagues were hand-picked by the late Jagmohan Dalmiya during his brief second innings as the Board president. That was well over three years ago. All along, neither the CAC's responsibilities nor roles were defined. Ramesh Powar's tenure is over, but T20I captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana have appealed that the former India off-spinner be brought back. Mithali Raj, the ODI captain, holds a different view. Apparently, Board CEO Rahul Johri (who was at the centre of a very recent inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment) and GM Syed Saba Karim are toeing the Mithali line.Neither Johri nor Saba Karim is known to function without Rai's okay, so it's assumed that the chief Administrator isn't at all in favour of again having Powar on board. Why not?Word is that Diana, with good reasons, is sympathetic towards Powar. In any case, when Harmanpreet and Smriti have endorsed Powar in such strong terms, why not offer him a fresh contract? If Virat Kohli could have his way with Ravi Shastri's appointment as the head coach (he'd earlier been the team director) in July 2017, then why not Harmanpreet and Smriti? Not long ago, by the way, the CAC had declined to fill a vacancy in the junior selection committee. Sachin had a "conflict of interest" on account of son Arjun, while Laxman was honest enough in accepting that he hadn't been following cricket at the juniors' level too closely. Sourav, it seems, did not reply to an email from the Administrators. Back to Laxman's email...From what one understands, Laxman wrote:A) The CAC's "inability" to participate in the "process" of the selection of the next head coach.B) "Request" for adequate "prior notice" to the CAC in such matters.C) An appeal that the CAC's "scope of role and responsibilities" be spelt out to ensure "clarity" in functioning.D) That the clarity issue had been "pending" since the CAC was constituted.E) Reinforced a "commitment" on the part of the CAC to "work for the development of the sport" and to do so on an "honorary basis."Clearly, the "honorary basis" bit needs to be highlighted and all three - Sachin, Sourav and Laxman - must be applauded.
