When is Diwali 2018?
The main festive night usually coincides with the Hindu Lunisolar month of Kartika in the Bikram Sambat calendar. According to the 'Gregorian calendar', however, Diwali night comes between mid-October and mid-November. Days before Diwali, people clean their houses and workplaces and on the day of the festival they decorate their homes with lights and candles. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on that day as the devotees offer prayers to the goddess of wealth for materialistic abundance and prosperity. Later, fireworks are performed followed by offering sweets and exchange of gifts among families, friends and relatives. The celebrations begin with Dhanteras, followed by 'Narak Chaturdasi' on the second day, Deepawali on Day 3, 'Diwali Padwa', which is dedicated to matrimony, on the fourth day and it all ends with 'Bhai Dooj', dedicated to the sister-brother bond on the fifth day. On Diwali night, Jains celebrate the attainment of salvation by Lord Mahavira, while 'Bandi Chhor Diwas' is celebrated among Sikhs to mark the release of Guru Hargobind Singh from a Mughal emperor. A majority of Buddhists celebrate Diwali by worshiping Laxmi. Dailyhunthttp://www.penninetroutfarmandfishery.co.uk/UserProfile/tabid/61/userId/1773477/Default.aspx
Potholes & burning garbage, Sarakki chokes on neglect
In order to protect the large tract of land near Geological Survey of India's office from turning into a black spot the BBMP early this year had put an aluminum sheet, but last month it vanished and the area has once again earned the sobriquet 'flesh dump' (owing to the throwing of waste from meat shops). 'Even when the sheet was there, slum residents used to throw the garbage outside the sheet and burn it under cover of darkness. The sheet was turned black but still, the situation was better. Now we are back to square one,' said Avinash Patil, a nearby resident. The locals claim that though the Palike is doing a fine job of cleaning up the area, but the meat shops owners of the nearby areas such as Umar Bagh and Banashankari were alleged to be dumping the animal waste. 'This is the situation in Kadirenahalli. The mushrooming of PG accommodation and eateries near college has led to the mess. They should be fined if found violating the BBMP guidelines,' said Ravi Shah, a resident of Kadirenahalli cross for the past 10 years. In the nearby alley that enters in Ilyas Nagar, the miscreants tore the green mesh and the broke the barbwire that was put up to prevent dumping. 'This is sickening and the job of the corporator is to mend it but not a single resident can claim of talking to the representative since he is well known for not taking calls. How could things improve then? This indicates of garbage mafia,' Shah added. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) reports says the formation of leachate due to the unauthorised dumping of garbage even contaminates the groundwater. Q&A: People should report about violator, saysMayor Gangambike Will the installation of CCTV cameras help in putting an end to garbage menace? Garbage burning is an issue which bothers people and to eliminate this, the corporators were allotted funds to install cameras at black spots, but still some miscreants dump and burn garbage. What is the solution then? Punitive action against the violators and I request people to report such incidents to us immediately. They should help us in nabbing the culprits. How could the residents contribute to keeping the environment clean? For a clean city, citizens and government officials should cooperate. The citizens should also show greater civic sense. We should adopt the method use in abroad of levying hefty fines on violators. Dailyhunthttp://www.itsarab.org/UserProfile/tabid/61/userId/33002/Default.aspx
Croatia captain Zeljko Krajan hails his Davis Cup dream team
'This is one of the best teams we've ever had - it's like a dream team,' Krajan said. 'After seven years on the bench (as captain) it's an honour for me to be here. : Marin Cilic beats Lucas Pouille, seals historic Davis Cup win for Croatia 'My singles players not only didn't lose a set, they didn't lose serve in three matches which is an unbelievable achievement and shows you the quality that we produced.' Victory was especially sweet for Cilic who had bitter memories of the 2016 final against Argentina to banish. In that match in Zagreb, he was two sets to love up against Juan Martin del Potro and required just one more set to give Croatia a match-winning 3-1 lead. However, Del Potro battled back to win in five before Federico Delbonis beat Ivo Karlovic to give Argentina victory. 'I always sleep well,' the 30-year-old Cilic, who made his debut in 2006, said, when asked whether that Del Potro defeat occasionally kept him awake at night. 'I'm just proud of the team today after everything we've been through. This is definitely one of the best moments of my career. There was a lot of pressure but I played a hell of a match today and deservedly won.' Cilic said the fact that the final was the last in the competition's current guise added to the joy. 'It's historic,' he said. 'I have been part of this team since 2006. I have seen a few generations of players, I have seen a lot of tennis, a lot of wins, a lot of matches lost too. 'It's amazing to finish a chapter of this kind with the way we played and the atmosphere that was in the team.' France captain Yannick Noah, who will step down from his third stint in charge, said his team had been outplayed as they failed in their bid to win the title two years in succession. 'The guys did the maximum,' Noah said. 'Sometimes the bar is too high. That's my feeling. 'We lost to a better team. We did everything we could to be at this level with the Croatian team. We just went to their locker-room to congratulate them. I think they're beautiful winners and they deserve it.' Dailyhunthttp://echometer.com/UserProfile/tabid/61/userId/457704/Default.aspx
Brexit trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch hacks the political system
Other usual suspects like Nigel Farage (Paul Ryan) and Boris Johnson (Richard Goulding) - with the amusing trademark hairdo - also appear. Cummings aims to create the biggest political upset since the fall of Berlin Wall. The trailer presents how the slogans like "Take Britain back" and "Let's fight for control" were just as empty as the promises that were made. The supporters of the leave campaign used social media in the manner Trump and his campaign managers did in the recent US presidential campaign. The leave campaign utilised the subliminal racist tendencies and fear of immigrants among a large section of the British. However, there is also a sense of grudging admiration among the writers of the movie. The Vote Leave campaign was indeed ingenious, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. The events have an ironic side, but the movie still seems earnest and not an out-and-out satire like Armando Iannucci's The Death of Stalin. Rory Kinnear of Penny Dreadful fame plays the role of Craig Oliver, a journalist who was the Director of Communications of the then British prime minister David Cameron and the head of the remain campaign. He accuses Cummings of "feeding a toxic culture of fear and hate. You can't close the box once it's been opened. It's your edge, newly found." Cummings replies, "There is a new politics in town. One that you cannot control." The movie synopsis reads, "The result of the Brexit referendum in summer 2016 caused a political earthquake that laid waste to the normally stable British establishment and sent political tremors around the world. Cumberbatch portrays Dominic Cummings, who spearheaded the Vote Leave campaign. Rory Kinnear plays Craig Oliver, Prime Minister David Cameron's director of communications and head of the Remain campaign." It continues, "This provocative feature-length drama goes behind the scenes, revealing the personalities, strategies and feuds of the Leave and Remain campaigns. The tactics employed by Vote Leave during the data-driven campaign swayed a historically silent voting bloc that would ultimately decide the outcome of the referendum, as well as affecting future elections around the world." Sherlock and Black Mirror veteran Toby Haynes directs a James Graham script. Brexit premieres on January 19, 2019. Dailyhunthttps://www.theverge.com/users/meekneekitto
