Watch: Can you tell if your child is lying?

'And we found that those young children who have more advanced mind-reading and self-control abilities tell lies earlier and are more sophisticated liars. As it turns out, these two abilities are also essential for all of us to function well in our society.' It's not easy to tell when kids lie, but behind that neutral mask, 'the child is actually experiencing a lot of emotions, such as fear, guilt, shame and maybe a little bit of liar's delight.' Here are some figures as well, to think about. Lee shares, 'We found that regardless of gender, country, religion, at two years of age, 30 percent lie, 70 percent tell the truth about their transgression. At three years of age, 50 percent lie and 50 percent tell the truth. At four years of age, more than 80 percent lie. And after four years of age, most children lie. So as you can see, lying is really a typical part of development. And some children begin to tell lies as young as two years of age.' Woman assaulted in Bengaluru for feeding stray dogs

When her friend, Geetha, who tried to help her file a police complaint, went to drop her back home, they again attacked Sujatha. When Geetha tried to make a video of the assault, she too was allegedly beaten up. Sujatha, who lives with her mother, has been feeding stray dogs since 2014. Last year, the residents started opposing her practice, saying the animals had attacked children. The situation turned ugly when a domestic help, Latha, claimed that the dogs chased her and she fell, due to which she lost two teeth. She and her friends, allegedly abused Sujatha, and demanded Rs 5,000 as compensation, which Sujatha refused to pay. On March 6, the residents approached Ulsoor police and contacted BBMP to take away the dogs. BBMP officials visited the spot, and found that all the dogs had been sterilised, and so they refused to take them. On the same day, Sujatha spotted Latha's husband and his friends hitting some dogs with chains and stones. When she objected, she too was beaten up with the chain, she said. "Latha, along with her two female friends, abused and assaulted me. So with a few animal lovers and Geetha Mishra, I went to file a police complaint. They refused to register an FIR," Sujatha said. The cops reportedly told them that the issue would just lead to complaints and counter-complaints, and assured them that they would not be attacked again. "When we went to drop Sujatha to her house, we saw that the dogs were friendly. We were taking photos of the dogs when three women and two men came and attacked Sujatha. One of us called the police and escaped. We then went to the police station and filed a complaint," said Geetha. According to Sujatha, the assaulters live in MV Garden, and not Gupta Layout. She said she is being targeted for different reasons by the residents. She added that her complaint was registered only after she approached the DCP. 'My lucky day': Greek man saved from Ethiopia crash by being 2 minutes late

He was supposed to board the plane but he reached the departure gate just two minutes after it was closed. He booked a later flight but was then prevented from boarding by airport staff. 'They led me to the police station of the airport. The officer told me not to protest but to pray to God because I was the only passenger that didn't board the ET 302 flight that was lost,' Mavropoulos said in his post in which he admits being in shock. The airport authorities explained that they wanted to question him because he was the only passenger booked onto the doomed flight who wasn't on board. 'They said they couldn't let me go before cross-checking my identity, the reason I hadn't boarded the plane etc.' The Nairobi-bound Boeing 737 crashed just minutes after an early-morning takeoff Sunday from Addis Ababa. People holding passports from more than 30 countries were on board including a number of UN workers. State-owned Ethiopian Airline had taken delivery of the Boeing 737-800 MAX plane on November 15. It was of the same type as a plane that crashed in October after take-off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board. 3 Greater Noida men stole KYC info, dupe banks of Rs 10 crore, arrested

Police said two of the three suspects worked as private vendors with a third party agency hired by telecom companies and private banks. 'Acting on the complaint, we arrested three men - Bhupendra Soni, Teerath Rathore and Chandra Prakash. The suspects used to get credit cards issued from banks through fraudulent means and then swipe them in an end of day-point of sale (EOD POS) machine to the maximum limit of the respective credit card for cash. They used to destroy the cards after that. During interrogation, they revealed that they had been doing this fraud since the last three years and defrauded various banks to the tune of Rs10 crore,' Raj Kumar Mishra, additional superintendent of police, STF, said. Explaining the functioning of EOD POS machines, Mishra said, 'EOD machines are issued by telecom companies and banks for transaction purposes where an amount can be transferred to another person's account via electronic transfer.' According to the police, the EOD machine took the suspects 2-3 turns to max out a credit card, on an average. Mishra said the role of third party vendors cannot be ruled out as, according to perks offered by banks, each vendor getting a credit card issued for a customer on behalf of the bank receives 4-5% commission whenever a credit card is maxed out. Police said all three suspects are from Delhi - Soni is a resident of Uttam Nagar, Rathore is a resident of Mangolpuri and Prakash is a resident of Rohini. They were booked under IPC sections 420, 467, 468, 471 for fraud, forgery of valuable security, forgery for purpose of cheating and using a fraud document as genuine, respectively. Eight aadhar cards, 36 credit and debit cards, , seven passbooks, eight cell phones and documents containing KYC details of thousands of customers, along with other banking documentation were also recovered. Police said the complainant, Pravin Kumar Purohit had alleged that a transaction worth Rs 5 lakh has been done on a credit card issued under his name. Police said an SBI credit card issued in the name of Purohit and a total of Rs 5 lakh were withdrawn in three transactions. It was only after the bank served a notice to Purhohit that he got to know about it. Police said they received a tip-off from an informant regarding the activities of the suspects and they were picked up. Police said each of the suspects had specific roles in the matter. 'Soni was the mastermind behind and he had worked with several mobile companies and banks in the past. His job back then was to fetch documents from customers and he used his contacts to illegally acquire personal information of the victims. Rathore worked as a sales manager at a TVS showroom in Mangolpuri of Delhi and was assigned to acquire documents related to KYC process in the issue of credit cards. Prakash worked in Intelenet, a third party agency hired by banks where his job was to visit the house of customers who applied for credit cards to initiate the process. Prakash used to forge entries of his field assignments for the issue of credit cards for the gang,' Mishra added. Dailyhunthttps://www.openlearning.com/u/veenekeenes

Be prepared for a new genus of death

They have wreaked havoc in Pakistan, Syria and Iraq et al. Leaving LTTE, suicide bombing is the specialty of Muslim terror. Today it is the new normal in countries plagued by jihad madness. As a modern terror invention, suicide bombing arrived first in 1980s' Lebanon. It became fashionable among a new generation of jihadis from the early 1980s through the 2000s and glamorised by Internet preachers of death. In India, where the majority of Muslims are not Salafists, the worry of young people blowing themselves up in the name of Allah did not top the alert list. But now, this particular brand of fear has come to our doorstep via Kashmir. Jihadis are a determined lot. Historically, military action has spawned lone wolf attacks like in Israel and the Middle East. Ironically, terror has no sect either: pro-India anti-Pak Iran has been promoting Hezbollah suicide attacks against Israel for decades. The formidable intelligence capabilities of Mossad and the Americans have greatly thwarted suicide attacks at home. 9/11 was an intelligence failure, and Indian agencies working with the Americans and Israelis are writing a new counter-terrorism manual. The prospect of suicide bombers infiltrating India and even getting homegrown sympathisers is real, according an intel source. Relentless military attacks by NATO armies on the Islamic State (IS) has emasculated it, but its cadres have escaped to safe havens to fight another day. Al Qaeda's mainline fighters were the battle-hardened Afghan mujahideen, who still train terrorists in Pakistan. But they are growing old. There is no guarantee that the young maniacs of IS won't regroup and take their place to bloody India, aided by Pakistan-especially after the Balakot action. With Donald Trump in the White House, publically backing India's right to revenge, escalation is inevitable. The air strikes have put PM Modi's electoral charisma on steroids, even in states where BJP is weak. The current poll mood is definitely military; the recent War Memorial event and the vocabulary of national pride evoking Bharat Mata portend a combative future. Expect a Modi wave in May. Also, expect a terror wave that India will have to meet with resolve. Jai Hind. Ravi Shankar ravi@newindianexpress.com Dailyhunthttps://gumroad.com/kivonlewisse

Protest fails to make waves; Mumbai's coastal road stays on course

The civic body should look to develop an extended sea link from Worli to Marine Drive, instead of reclaiming the sea. We want maximum Mumbaiites to join the protest.' Fishermen, too, have joined in. 'In December, BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta had promised that a committee comprising fishermen and experts would be formed to look into our issues. The reclamation at Worli is destroying the fish breeding sites,' said Damodar Tandel, president, Akhil Maharashtra Machimar Kriti Samiti, adding, 'The report from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, which is vital to gauge the extent of environmental damage, is awaited.' The reclaimed land at Girgaum Chowpatty will be used to launch the shaft for the tunnel-boring machine. 'The civic body has placed an order for the machine, and it is expected to arrive by September. We will take up to three months to put the machine together. Construction of the tunnel will start by January 2020,' said a senior civic officer of the coastal road department. 'The BMC has got all relevant permissions and no-objection letters from the environment ministry. We have got 18 permissions, the last one in May 2017. We have ensured no breeding spots are destroyed. The coastal road will not require private land. To avoid traffic congestion, we move trucks only at night.' 4 missing Karnataka Congress MLAs return after several weeks

They had been absent from the budget session of the state assembly as well. It was called to take stock of the Congress's strength amid speculation that some legislators were about to resign from the party and in the process of destabilising the coalition government of the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular). Jarkiholi came back to Bengaluru on Tuesday night, news agency ANI reported. 'I have small issues with my party leaders. There was some miscommunication. I was not satisfied with some of the party decisions. As this is a budget session, I have come back,' Kumathali was quoted as saying by ANI. Jarkiholi and Mahesh Kumathahalli, who were untraceable for the past few weeks, wrote to former chief minister Siddaramaiah earlier in January to reiterate their loyalty to the party after they were sent notices for failing to attend a meeting of the CLP. 'The BJP led them astray from their path. Now they have realised that the path they had chosen was a wrong on, and that they will have to suffer on that path. They have now returned home,' Karnataka minister Zameer Ahmed Khan said, according to ANI. 'Now, the party high command will decide. The decision to disqualify them has been taken in the CLP meeting. We have given a letter to the Governor already,' Khan said. Khan was referring to the Congress's tough stand on the four leaders, who have said they will not be able to attend the 10-day budget session and also skipped a legislature party meeting. Their prolonged absence appears to have emboldened the BJP and sparked fresh speculations over the future of the ruling alliance. Similarly, Janata Dal(Secular) leader KC Narayana Gowda reiterated he was being treated for food poisoning in a hospital after speculation over his political move following his absence from the assembly session in Karnataka. 'The BJP can't and never purchase me. If I want I can bring 10 BJP MLAs. I was admitted in hospital after food poisoning, I have the hospital bills. There will be some internal issues inside the party and we'll clear it as usual,' Narayana Gowda said, according to news agency ANI. Reports had said Gowda was not happy with chief minister HD Kumaraswamy for ignoring his constituency Krishnarajpet. The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have been levelling accusations at each other of poaching legislators in Karnataka where the former, in partnership with the Janata Dal (Secular), runs the state with a majority of seven seats.
