Purifiers crawl out in New India
ome Congress members tried to stop the BJP group, sparking a brawl. In response to a question from this newspaper, Kancha Ilaiah, writer and Dalit activist, said: "'Purification' is an absolutely meaningless act by bigoted people who do cheap politics.. The BJP is converting India into a primitive nation and causing enormous damage to us.."Heramb Chaturvedi, author and history professor at Allahabad University, said: "When garlands are presented to statues of dead people, they are often given to devotees later as prasad.. It is the soul of the deceased that is venerated and not a dead body or statue.. Once the garland itself becomes prasad, where is the question of purifying the statue? This action of people purifying it stems from attempts by some to interpret religious texts according to their own understanding."Before garlanding Shastri's statue on Wednesday, Priyanka addressed a gathering at Assi Ghat and worshipped at Kashi Vishwanath temple. She asked former and current students of Banaras Hindu University, who had gathered at Assi Ghat, if they had got jobs during Modi's tenure as Prime Minister. "No," the youths replied in unison. Dailyhunthttp://doodleordie.com/profile/juckzingchuk
Holika bonfire off roads, orders RMC
Heat causes road surfaces to melt and develop pockmarks. Also, roundabout/ road Holika bonfires pose a threat to commuters."We appealed to residents against Holika Dahan on roads, otherwise be ready for prosecution. This has been done to prevent damage to the bitumen and prevent snarls. We asked all residents to conduct Holika Dahan on flanks of roads," said RMC chief executive officer Manoj Kumar.A source in the RMC explained the need for this advisory. "In the last one year over 50 roads with a bitumen surface have been constructed by the RMC. Heat of the bonfire will cause cracks on the surface. The extent of the damage will be felt during monsoon when water seeps into the cracks to create potholes," said the RMC official. The advisory also appealed to groups to dispose burnt wood in designated municipality vats or at least make heaps on the side to make the job easier for civic waste collectors. The civic body CEO added that more than a half a dozen RMC enforcement teams would be put on vigil during Holika Dahan. "The teams will warn residents against burning Holika bonfires on the road and suggesting roadside flanks. However, if groups do not relent, they will be prosecuted as per Jharkhand Municipal Act 2011," he said. The civic body has also appealed to residents to celebrate a dry Holi with gulal to conserve water in view of the capital's depleting water table. Every summer, Ranchi has a water crisis. Dailyhunthttps://able2know.org/user/veenekee/
Driver abducts schoolchildren, sets bus ablaze in Italy
NSA quoted one of the students as saying the driver took all their phones and ordered the chaperones to bind the students' hands with cable ties, threatening to spill gas and set the bus ablaze. The student, whose name was not given, said a classmate managed to conceal his phone.Authorities said that an adult called an emergency operator, while one of the students called a parent, and they alerted authorities, who set up roadblocks. The bus was intercepted on the outskirts of Milan by three Carabinieri vehicles, which were able to force it into the guardrail, De Marchis said."While two officers kept the driver busy - he took a lighter and threatened to set fire to the vehicle with a gasoline canister on board - the others forced open the back door," De Marchis said. While the evacuation was underway, the driver started the blaze.De Marchis credited the officers' "swiftness and courage", for getting out all the children and their teachers "with no tragic consequences".Some of the passengers were treated at a hospital, mostly for cuts and scratches related to the evacuation, he said. The driver was apprehended and was being treated for burns. ANSA identified him as Ousseynou Sy and said he was being investigated on suspicion of kidnapping, intention to commit mass murder, arson and resisting law enforcement.De Marchis said he had previous convictions, but did not specify their nature.ANSA reported that Sy, who became an Italian citizen in 2004, had been convicted in 2007 and 2011 of drunken driving and sexual molestation of a minor. Sky TG24 said that the driver had worked for the bus company for 15 years without any employment-related issues."Investigators must clarify how the transport company permitted such a delinquent... to drive a bus, especially one carrying children," said Riccardo De Corato, a Milan provincial official for security.A video showed firefighters dousing the bus that had been completely gutted by flames, leaving only the charred metal frame. This centre offers expert help, free counselling to resolve marital disputes before they reach court
It has five expert counsellors who try and resolve disputes free of cost, Chetan Bhagwat, secretary of DLSA, told The Indian Express. 'So far, we have received 78 applications… those are not only about disputes between married couples but also involve providing solutions in a family tiff'. The main aim of the counselling centre is to provide free legal aid. 'These centres operate independently and have no bearing on any pending cases. The confidentiality of the persons is maintained,' said Bhagwat. Dr Radha Raje, consulting psychologist and a senior counsellor at the centre, said they deal with various kinds of cases. She cited an instance where it took nearly five sessions with a couple to save their marriage. 'In this case, the husband was a psychiatric patient. While she was not told about his condition before the marriage, the woman adjusted and their life was fine when he took medication. However, their marriage was on the verge of collapse when they approached our centre. Her husband had stopped taking medication and had left his job. She had to take up a job to look after the family. She had learnt about this centre when she approached a lawyer friend as she wanted to file a divorce petition. The counselling sessions helped as her husband started taking medication again. We have also called them for a follow-up,' said Dr Raje. 'Our role is to ensure that in this process, their quality of life should not be affected,' she added. Bhagwat said the centre will also cater to senior citizens, especially in cases where a parent is not being treated properly by their child. The centre comes as a relief for warring couples and families that want their problems solved. Instead of spending a significant amount of money and time in courts, or even paying a sizable sum to private counsellors, they can try to resolve their issues at these centres. 'I tell stories of life'
It's a child's plea to the nation's PM for better sanitation in the slums, after his mother is raped on the night of Holi, as she goes to relieve herself for lack of toilets in the slums. 'He asks the PM of the country that what if your mother faced this, how would you feel, and the solution for this problem. The film raises pressing questions that the country is facing in this regard and how it has turned into a law and order problem,' says Mehra. With each film, says Mehra, he wants to raise the bar and devise ways to talk of issues. There are many worlds in our life, adds Mehra, if one strives to look at them and is inspired to create from these. 'I tell stories of life, something hidden, striving to connect people with each other,' says Mehra, who is working on a new project titled Toofan with Farhan Akhtar. It took a long time before the film finally took shape. He was coming back late in the night from Film City about eight years ago and crossed an empty area near the slums. 'As we took a turn, a number of women who were out there to relieve themselves, rushed when they saw the headlights. This stayed in mind for long. It is also the opening scene of my film. According to a survey, 50 per cent of the rapes happen because of lack of toilets,' says Mehra. The film has many layers, one on how the victim (Anjali Patil) deals with the violation, how her eight-year-old son attempts to change things, the support she receives from her people in the colony and how they make her feel no different than before. Patil describes the film as 'the need of the hour', as she shares how beautifully the film depicts the rehabilitation of rape victims and how her character embraces life. 'As an actor coming from a different social background, I understood the life of people in the slums and how they celebrate their struggles and are content in spite of all odds. Children make you see things from a larger perspective and I am so privileged to be a part of it,' says Patil. Mehra says that the film is inspired by Gandhi and dedicated to him. 'There is a huge urban-rural divide from the school level and the sense of inclusiveness is completely lacking. Our own thinking affects our children and we see that here. As filmmakers and writers we need to give opportunities and representation to them. Look at the cricket team. Once a game only of the elite, it took a boy from Ranchi to be a gamechanger and make India a world champion,'says Mehra. Triple Frontier movie review: Netflix delivers the best Ben Affleck film in many, many years
Triple Frontier has that 'something for everyone' quality that could either work in its favour, or be its undoing. It constantly keeps reinventing itself every 15 minutes; it goes from gritty drug drama to slick heist movie, and then transforms into an old-school Western, and ends as a survival thriller/ chase film. Understandably, this may be too much for an audience looking for cheap thrills, but for Chandor and his cast, it's an excuse to play in five movies instead of one, and to use genre to make important subtextual statements about violence, vengeance and warfare. the Triple Frontier trailer here Five former military veterans, bitter about the sorry hand they've been dealt by their country despite literally taking bullets for it, plan to take down a larger-than-life Mexican drug lord and keep all his dirty money for themselves. That is about as much as you need to know going in, and it is roughly a summation of what was shown in the film's trailer. Immediately after having seen it, I remember thinking that the trailer had essentially revealed the entire film's plot. But it turns out that Netflix has taken the Marvel approach to marketing this film, in that what we've seen so far is - to make an informed guesstimate - mostly footage from the first 30 minutes. The element of surprise has largely disappeared from modern mainstream moviemaking. And one of Triple Frontier's greatest accomplishments is how confidently it topples the expectations of a wary and weathered audience. It swerves around into strange and wonderful new directions in its remaining hour-and-a-half, piling set-piece upon set-piece, balancing action (of different styles) with deft character work and brazen political ideas. Pedro Pascal, Garrett Hedlund, Charlie Hunnam, and Ben Affleck in a still from Triple Frontier. ( Courtesy of Netflix ) And although Ben Affleck is (understandably) the top-billed actor in the credits, Oscar Isaac is ostensibly the film's lead. It is he who plays the Bruce Wayne-style role, and rounds up his old brothers for the job. Charlie Hunnam is delivering 'inspirational' speeches to future recruits, and for the first time his typical wooden delivery makes sense. His (actual) brother, played by Garrett Hedlund, is an MMA fighter. Pedro Pascal is once again playing one of his snaky charmers, and Affleck is peddling real estate. They are united by their feelings of resentment towards what they have sacrificed for their country - personally, physically and professionally - and what they have received in return. They are promised that the drug lord Lorea - an unseen entity who lingers like a spectre in the film's opening act - has a stash of close to $75 million, which will be more than fair compensation for all their troubles, past and present. Triple Frontier is part-morality tale about selfishness and greed and corruption, part-parable about the perils of military intervention, but more importantly, it's an insanely entertaining movie. Of course, it's slightly off-putting that it's so bashfully masculine (especially in this day and age), but that can be largely credited to writer Mark Boal's creative inclinations. Ben Affleck ("Redfly") in a still from Netflix's Triple Frontier. ( Courtesy of Netflix ) Boal, the Academy Award-winning writer of recent Kathryn Bigelow films such as The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty and Detroit, is in many ways the only constant in Triple Frontier's long and precarious journey to the (small) screen. Numerous actors - Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Will Smith, Tom Hardy to name a few - have signed on and dropped out, several directors were attached before Chandor, including Bigelow, and the film moved from Paramount to Netflix. It'll be interesting to know just how majorly (or not) Boal's original screenplay has changed in these years. One would imagine every lead actor having suggested certain adjustments to tailor the role to suit them, but something tells me Affleck just went along for the ride. He is, for the first time in many years, visibly enthusiastic about acting - and at the very least, he doesn't have that look of pure contempt that was plastered on his face for most of Justice League.
