'Southpaw shortage not a concern for India's batting', says Sachin Tendulkar
'Ideally left-right combination is something which disturbs the bowler's line and length and also the captain has to readjust his fielding,' Tendulkar, 46, said in an interview ahead of the World Cup, which starts in England on Thursday. 'But if you have good quality batters, which we do, then it really doesn't matter whether it is a left-hand right-hand combination. We have some solid batters who can deliver the punch.' With the experienced partnership of Rohit Sharma and Dhawan locked in as openers and captain Virat Kohli coming in at first drop, the 1983 and 2011 champions have a top order the rival of any in the game. But they will go into this year's World Cup with a soft underbelly having failed to settle on a number four, with KL Rahul the favourite to fill the position after his century in Tuesday's practice match against Bangladesh. Following next in the batting order will be veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose 341 ODI appearances makes him the most experienced player at this year's World Cup. India's 2011 World Cup winning captain is considered the best finisher in contemporary cricket and his inputs from behind the stumps would be as important, said Tendulkar. 'It's important that someone who's standing behind the wickets has played for such a long time and has also led India and is in the best possible position to figure out what's happening off the surface,' Tendulkar said. 'Whether the ball is stopping, bouncing, or skidding, whatever it is, he knows exactly how the ball is coming and he knows where the gaps are and how to close those gaps. His contribution and inputs are always going to be important. 'Other keepers also try and do the same thing but MS's experience is going to count a lot.' India boast of world's top-ranked ODI bowler in quick Jasprit Bumrah while wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal also feature in the top 10. Tendulkar, who remains the only cricketer to score 100 centuries across formats, played six consecutive World Cups from 1992 and holds the records for most runs and centuries in the tournament's history. He is confident India have a 'complete' bowling attack to win their third 50-over title. 'We have someone like Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) who swings the ball, (Mohammed) Shami who is skiddy off the pitch, Bumrah who is the number one bowler in the world in this format,' said Tendulkar, a member of India's 2011 World Cup triumph at home. 'We have someone like Chahal and Kuldeep who are wrist spinners. So there is variety also in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja can keep things tight. 'And we have supporting bowlers in Hardik (Pandya), Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav. So all in all a well-balanced bowling attack I would say.' The World Cup returns to the 10-team format to maintain quality of the competition after featuring 14 in each of the last two editions. The decision was criticised by former players and associate nations, who are upset at being denied the chance to rub shoulders with the top sides of the world. 'Ideally if it's called the World Cup then the world should be participating. We need to find ways to engage more teams yet keep that standard of playing high,' Tendulkar said. 'It's not going to happen overnight. We need to find ways to do that. I will love to see more than 10 teams participating but also at the same time not compromise on the standard of playing. 'It's going to be a lengthy process. Lesser teams should get more exposure to get ready for big tournaments.' India suffered the ignominy of being eliminated in the opening round of the tournament in 2007 while 2019 hosts England met the same fate last time the showpiece event was held in Australia and New Zealand four years back. But this year's format — which will see all teams playing each other with the top four advancing to the semi-finals — will ensure teams have a shot at redemption, according to Tendulkar. 'This format still gives you a chance to come back. You are not out even before you wake up,' Tendulkar said. 'Sometimes it can be harsh. Since this is the World Cup, one would want to get another chance. If it's a bad day then you have time to recover and this format allows you to recover.' ... Medical student suicide: SC/ST panel records statements again, 'many may have hid casteist remarks under pressure'
On Tuesday, the commission had issued notices to Nair hospital, additional commissioner of police (Central Region) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner, following the suicide by 26-year-old postgraduate medical student Payal Tadvi over alleged caste discrimination and harassment. 'The medical college should hold meetings regularly, gather students every three months to sensitise them about ragging. But the hospital did not hold any such meeting since a year and a half,' said commission member Justice C L Thool, adding that the anti-ragging committee did not need a complaint to meet. The commission members visited Nair hospital between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm, and recorded statements of the dean, gynaecology department resident doctors, professors and roommates of Tadvi. They also visited Tadvi's hostel room, where she committed suicide on May 22. Who are Tadvi Bhil Muslims? Thool said the commission will focus on whether Tadvi faced any atrocity as per the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. 'If we find evidence, the commission can direct prosecution against the responsible officers,' he added. The commission also directed Additional Commissioner of Police Deepak Kundal to look at the case from an angle of caste-based discrimination. Tadvi had secured admission in the gynaecology department under the reserved category in TN Topiwala National Medical College, attached to Nair hospital. She allegedly faced harassment at the hands of senior resident doctors Ankita Khandelwal, Bhakti Mehare and Hema Ahuja, who have been arrested. Mumbai doctor's suicide: College confirms she was harassed over her caste, scolded hours before death Further, the commission has recorded the statements of Tadvi's family members. It is also recording the statements of many others associated to the deceased and the hospital, who have already given their statements to the police. 'Many may have hid casteist remarks (used against Tadvi) from the police under pressure,' said Thool. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has set up a five-member panel to review the anti-ragging report submitted by Nair hospital on Tuesday. The report has found evidence that the three accused resident doctors had harassed Payel. 'The report speaks of harassment by the three seniors and negligence on part of gynaecology unit head Dr YI Ching Ling,' a committee member said. MUHS Registrar Kalidas Chavan said the university's anti-ragging committee will only look into the allegations of ragging in connection to Tadvi's suicide. Offences against STs rise 30 per cent rise three years While Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan had said on Tuesday that the 21-member anti-ragging committee of Nair hospital had found evidence of casteist remarks while recording the statements of 30 people, hospital Dean Dr R N Bharmal said the college report only restricts itself to ragging allegations. MNS' Aditya Shirodkar on Wednesday met Maharashtra Medical Council (MCC) chairperson to demand cancellation of licence of the three accused doctors. The MMC, meanwhile, has asked the MUHS to share the final findings of the anti-ragging report. 'The MMC may suspend or terminate the licences if the allegations are true,' said Registrar Sanjay Deshmukh. Mumbai: Bullets aimed at friend injure 25-year-old man at Deonar; one arrested
According to police, the incident took place at 5.30 am near the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Road when Mirza had come to his parents' residence for his sehri — meal consumed before fasting during Ramzan. Mirza helps his father with his property business. When Mirza and three others were returning home on two motorcycles, they were accosted by six persons, who were in in an auto-rickshaw and a bike. They got off the vehicles and attacked Mirza and the others with him. 'One of the accused, identified as Rajan, pulled out a firearm and shot three rounds. One of the bullets hit Mirza's friend Shaikh on the knee. Shaikh was rushed to the hospital,' an officer said. Police registered an FIR on charges of attempt to murder, causing hurt, rioting in addition to sections of the Arms Act. They said the incident was related to a past dispute. 'We have arrested one person in connection with the case. It appears that Mirza had purchased a property in Khalapur through one of the accused who works as a broker. There was a dispute regarding the deal and both sides had filed complaints against each other in the past. The attack appears to be the outcome of the same dispute,' an officer said. What to wear during your periods
Make sure you don't strangle yourself in tightness. Jeans are your best friend Now, jeans might not be a popular choice during periods. But jeans that aren't skinny fitting or light coloured can come handy. Jeans that fit comfortably will make sure your pad or tampon stays in place. Try prints Stains are a woman's biggest fear during those days of the month. No matter how careful you are there are always some accidents. Try wearing prints to camouflage the occasional leaks. Mind you this is just a contingency plan. Leggings Paired with the right kurta or even a long t-shirt, leggings are almost as comfortable as track pants. If you're conscious of the bulge of pads or the stain scare, match it with a tunic or tops that go past your hips to stay safe. Skip the heels This one is a no-brainer. One could skip the heels even when they aren't on the period but stay away from the stilts during because of the pressure it causes on the lower back which is probably already hurting from cramps. Sporty and sneaky Change your style to sporty for a few days. Pick t-shirt dresses if you have to go for a night out. These will keep you comfortable and will also feel dressy on occasions. Pick joggers and match them with a nice blouse or top to trick people into thinking you're all put together. Cong workers gather outside Rahul Gandhi's residence urging him not to resign
Boxer Vijender Singh, who had fought the Lok Sabha polls from the South Delhi constituency and ended up at the third spot said workers do not want Rahul Gandhi to resign as he is an "able and hardworking" leader. "He has not resigned. We have come to talk to him. He has made an offer to resign but people do not want him to go. "He has worked hard. If the results are not in our favour, it hurts but we are fighters. Nobody else can work like him. He is a leader who takes everyone together," Singh said. Slogans of 'Rahulji, we are with you' and 'Please do not resign' rang through the air. Several workers were carrying placards with Gandhi's photos urging him not to resign. Some workers were even demanding that elections be held again in a fair manner with ballot papers instead of EVMs since the latter could have been tampered. Congress leader Jagdish Tytler said there are millions of Congress workers who do not want Gandhi to resign. "We had to be here because we do not want him to resign. There are millions of Congress workers who do not want him to resign. We are disappointed with the results but not with the leadership," he said. The crisis in the Congress showed no signs of easing with Gandhi sticking to his decision to resign as party chief after its Lok Sabha poll debacle and staying away from meeting party leaders. On Tuesday, Gandhi had only met his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, besides senior party leader K C Venugopal and the Congress's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot went to meet Gandhi at his Tughlaq Lane residence on Tuesday, but they only met Priyanka. Senior Congress leaders have been pressing Gandhi to take back his decision to resign and revamp the party at all levels in these challenging times. ...
