Busted: Most common myths around sleep

"Dispelling myths about sleep promotes healthier sleep habits which, in turn, promote overall better health," she added. To reach this conclusion, researchers reviewed more than 8,000 websites to identify the 20 most common assumptions about sleep. With a team of sleep medicine experts, they ranked them based on whether each could be dispelled as a myth or supported by scientific evidence, and on the harm that the myth could cause. Another common myth relates to snoring. While snoring can be harmless, it can also be a sign of sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder. The authors encourage patients not to dismiss loud snoring, but rather to see a doctor since this sleep behaviour may lead to heart stoppages or other illnesses. The study authors also found sufficient evidence that, despite beliefs to the contrary, drinking alcoholic beverages before bed is indeed unhealthy for sleep. "Sleep is important to health, and there needs to be greater effort to inform the public regarding this important public health issue," noted study senior investigator Girardin Jean Louis. Robbins and her colleagues suggest creating a consistent sleep schedule and spending more time, at least seven hours, asleep. Medically Yourrs review: This engrossing drama treats MBBS jitters with love

The new offering on ALT Balaji shows us the world of a group of medical students at KIMS - a top medical institute in Kolkata. While a few of the students came there expecting to find their Kim Kardashian, they find their exact opposites, who don't bother to even take bath in order to save time for studies. But don't mistake it for another hopelessly romantic college drama; the series is short, crisp and brings in a whiff of freshness after the uber-glam but inane Student of the Year 2. Medically Yourrs is neither over-the-top romance nor has any song and dance to take the attention away from the studious lot. The makers don't make it too complicated, instead it focuses on the tough lives of the students who take their own health for granted in order to become a doctor. The protagonists are pleasantly flawed, making it more realistic. Shantanu plays Abir Basu, a 'stud' from a reputed family of doctors and forced to follow in their footsteps. Keeping his musical dreams aside, he succumbs to the familial pressure. In a subject he cannot clear, he goes the extra mile to please a female professor (Shruti Bapna) leading to situations far more complex than one can imagine. How he crosses all lines to gain a few marks in order to please his father hints at a dark reality. He is weak and selfish but still manages to emerge as a hero figure. Shantanu Maheshwari plays Abir Basu in Medically Yourrs. The female protagonist Nibedita (Nityaami Shirke) doesn't mind keeping hygiene on the back-burner in order to make time for her studies. She is headstrong, doesn't woo the hero in salwar-kameez and is vulnerable enough to get swayed by a charming filmmaker. The show revolves around a group of friends who are dealing with MBBS in their own ways. Many of them light up one cigarette after another as they go on to burn the midnight oil. The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir trailer: Dhanush embarks on a crazy journey to Paris via a twisted route With survival of the fittest being the rule of the game, a weak moment leads to an unforeseen suicide and reminds us of Joy Lobo in 3 Idiots. But has there been a decline in student suicides posts the film's success? Amid all the chaos of exams, friendships and a sex scandal, the lead actor's dream of becoming a musician comes as a soothing effect as he hums a Bengali rendition on his guitar in a rare stress-free moment. While MBBS appears to be one of the toughest careers in India, it does give a reality check into the lives of those who dare to go for it. Student or not, this series will definitely tug at your heartstrings. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Congress MLAs 'merger' made official, K Chandrasekhar Rao may expand Cabinet soon

However, while expanding the Cabinet in February, the Chief Minister declared that two women would be taken into the Cabinet in the next expansion. According to sources, Sabitha may become one of the two women who are expected to be taken into Rao's Cabinet. The Cabinet expansion is delayed due to series of elections. Rao also waited for the merger of the CLP with the TRS so that the defected members could be inducted into the Cabinet without any problem. In his first term, Rao inducted Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who defected from TDP to TRS, into the Cabinet. However, the TRS government faced severe criticism over the issue. The TDP filed a disqualification petition against Srinivas Yadav then. But, this time, the TRS would not face such problems as the defections will be ratified as per the provisions of the X Schedule of the Constitution. Of five vacancies in the Cabinet, Rao would most likely pick Sabitha Indra Reddy and MLC A Lalitha to keep his promise of representation to two women. The remaining three vacancies might be filled with Rao's son and TRS working president KT Rama Rao and his nephew T Harish Rao. The third slot might be filled by Gutha Sukhender Reddy, if he is tipped to be sent to the Legislative Council. Though, there is a talk that Rao may drop some ministers a possibility is very remote, sources said. 'People approved the merger' Twelve Congress MLAs, who merged with the TRS on Thursday, said that their merger was approved by the people of their respective Assembly segments. Speaking to reporters after submitting a formal letter to Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy for the merger, Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy said that they have joined TRS only to fulfil the assurances given to the people. "We have given several assurances to the people during the elections. We have to fulfil them. That is why we have joined TRS. We are supporting the leadership of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao," Ramana Reddy said. Haripriya Banoth said that they joined TRS as per the X Schedule of the Constitution of India. Kantha Rao Rega expressed hope that his segment would get more funds for the development of the Scheduled Area. Swift Actions Need to Follow PM's Stern Words

Most of the space in print and electronic media has been hogged by the decimation of the Congress and yet another humiliating performance by RaGa. It has distracted our attention from other perhaps even more significant tectonic shifts that have taken place. It's highly unlikely that Congress will ever rise like the Phoenix in near or distant future, but the results have definitely sounded the death knell for the Communist parties. Both CPI and CPI(M) managed to scrounge just five seats in the Lok Sabha and four of these were practically gifted by the DMK in Tamil Nadu. The CPI(M) drew a blank even in West Bengal and Tripura, once considered its impenetrable citadels. The much-hyped election of Kanhaiya Kumar in Begusarai ended with a whimper with the articulate youngster losing by hundreds of thousands of votes. Does anyone remember that in the first Lok Sabha the Communists were the largest party in Opposition? They have themselves to blame. The ideologues in CPI(M) and CPI lived in denial, committing one Himalayan blunder after another and jumped into the dustbin of history with their feet firmly in their mouth. No mean feat. RIP. One may call Modi a megalomaniac, trigger-happy warmonger, a dangerous demagogue fanning communal passions, but it can't be denied that he proved himself more credible to the voters. No purpose is served by tying oneself in knots about the fatal flaws in our first past the post electoral system or the unfair domination of media by the party in power. Modi mesmerised the voters even in states ruled by the Congress. Nor did the grand alliance forged against NDA in UP work. As a matter of fact, the myth of social engineering, arithmetic of caste-based coalitions has finally been punctured. Those holding/wielding the 'Kamandal' are having the last laugh. The forces of identity politics unleashed by the Mandal Commission are now exhausted. The Last Post has been sounded for Lalu Yadav and Ajit Singh. And the tolling of the bells can't be very reassuring for Mayawati. She and Akhilesh Yadav may live to fight another day, but for both all-India ambitions have been extinguished. It has been a cruel May for the patriarchs. N Chandrababu Naidu has been trounced and Sharad Pawar managed to save face by choosing discretion. Ex-PM Deve Gowda, his lachrymose in-power CM son, too, were reduced to eminently forgettable 'also-rans'. Didi never strutted as a Matriarch, but the losses TMC suffered are no less distressing. The only party to predictably emerge victorious was the DMK in Tamil Nadu. However, it is in no position to adopt a militantly confrontationist stance against the Centre. Modi and Amit Shah are very different from the UPA leadership that allowed the tail to wag them. Stalin has proved himself a battle-worthy leader but the times have changed and the language or regional cards have lost their value. The state-one of the most progressive in the country-has accomplished much to take pride in. One hopes that partisan parochial politics will not interfere with its progress. This brings us back to the misfortunes of the Congress. RaGa has managed to secure a distant door entry to the Parliament and his primary concern is to secure for him the status of the Leader of Opposition. Not many are bothered about what sop he is consoled with. Citizens are more concerned about the absence of a substantial Opposition within and without the Parliament. India is too diverse a country to be democratically ruled by a single party. There is no dearth of critics who are ringing alarm bells about religious identity of the majority community dominating the imagination of the Modi-led BJP government. Unfortunately the government's reluctance to enforce the rule of law where lynch mobs claiming political patronage roam rampaging has engendered legitimate misgivings. The PM has more than once condemned the vigilantes draped in saffron but stern words have not always been followed by swift punishment. Fielding a terror-accused incurable motormouth as its candidate from Bhopal has also tarnished the party's image. One hopes that Pragya Thakur having served the electoral purpose is soon banished to oblivion. pushpeshpant@gmail.com DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Bharat opens to mixed responses

How else can one decide whether #Bharat is as despicable as #Tubelight #Race3 #ThugsOfHindustan #Kalank.. or even worse?' he said in a tweet. While the early box office numbers seem somewhat encouraging, theatres across India are expecting a substantial slump in the coming days — that's bad news for Salman Khan, whose last two Eid releases Tubelight and Race 3 bombed at the box office (although Salman seems to think otherwise). All eyes now seem to be on Prabhudeva's Dabangg 3, which is scheduled to open in December. It may be noted here that Prabhudeva was the one who revived Salman's career in 2008 (after a spate of failures) with his film Wanted. Prabhudeva, however, begs to differ. 'That's too much credit to one film. Salman Khan is a superstar of epic proportions. He is certainly far beyond hits and flops,' he said. Taran adds, 'It's Salmania all over. Bharat is an emotional journey and I am sure, the family audiences as well as Salman fans will take it to major success. The Day 1 numbers are his highest.' ...
