Dimbeswar Baruah's plea to honour educationists

fter a meaningful career in schools spread across several districts, Baruah joined the Sivasagar Govt Multipurpose HS School as principal in 1983, from where he retired in 1989. A dedicated teacher and administrator, it was during his tenure as principal that the school produced many HS toppers in the science and arts streams. His contribution to society did not end with retirement. He was entrusted with several important assignments related to development of schools by both the Secondary Education Board of Assam (Seba) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council. He also joined the Srimanta Sankardev Society and embarked on social and religious work. He has also received several awards.Baruah was moved on getting the news about the award but could not attend the award event due to health issues. His son Moni Baruah accepted the award on his behalf."I am honoured to receive the award. By instituting the awards, The Telegraph has paved the way for other big business houses to follow in the footsteps and launch such initiatives. This is a great gesture towards educators. Such recognition to people who work for society throughout their lives will surely inspire others to dedicate their lives to education. The awards and scholarships to students will provide support and inspiration at a stage when they need it the most," Baruah said from Sivasagar.SBI assistant general manager (personal relations) Dijen Borah, who gave away the award to the lifetime achievers, said, "It was an honour for me to give away the awards to teachers who give so much to us but receive so little in return. This is a brilliant initiative by The Telegraph to honour both students and teachers on the same platform. I was especially moved by the courage awards to differently-abled children".Lifetime achievement awards were also presented to eminent educationists Anil Kumar Som and Nitya Sarma.Som transformed Kamakhya Vidyalaya, one of the most sought-after government schools in the city, by his vision and dedication. His good work in pulling out an institution from obscurity to glory has been acknowledged and amply rewarded. The recipient of innumerable awards, Som received the State Award for Best Teacher in 1987. He was also conferred the Best Teacher Award in 1992 by the then President Shankar Dayal Sharma for his relentless efforts in the field of education. It was his zeal and enthusiasm to shape young minds that motivated him to venture out and sow the seeds of an institution of repute. Thus was established St Vivekananda English Academy. East Bengal unwilling to play on Thursday

It was very difficult to get police permission for Thursday. We had to make a series of requests to various quarters. "Everything is ready now, and if we postpone the match at the eleventh hour, that would be unfair. "So the match is on. If any of the teams don't turn up, a decision will be taken based on the referee's report," Joydeep said. The fate of the league championship depends on this game. If East Bengal don't turn up and play, then according to IFA rules, three points will be awarded to Calcutta Customs. And if East Bengal play, they have to win the match by at least a seven-goal margin to bag the title. Peerless SC would be crowned champions otherwise. Peerless SC are at the pole position of the table with 23 points from 11 matches. But the formal announcement regarding Peerless being champions will be made after the league-sub committee meeting, which is likely to be held after the Durga Puja.East Bengal have requested the IFA to schedule the match after October 21, as some of their players and coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia are leaving the city on Thursday evening.Joydeep said: "Yes we have received a letter from East Bengal, but that was after we had sent them the schedule. Had they sent the letter earlier, then the thing might have been different."I have also received a letter from Calcutta Customs. They said it would be difficult for them to play if we schedule the match after the Pujas. "We had already decided in a meeting, which was attended by all CFL Premier Division A clubs, that the league would be completed before the Pujas." TV actress Sanjeeda teams up with singer-composer for music video in Istanbul

I was very happy that he approached me. He told me he would feature in it too. And then when he said we are shooting this video in Istanbul, I was like, 'Dude there's no looking back now."Have you acted in a music video before?I have but not on this scale. They were all shot here or in Goa..How was it shooting in Turkey? It was my first time in Istanbul and we tried to explore the best locations. If you're going out of the country, the director keeps in mind that you need to explore the best locations apart from the actors looking good. The whole packaging and styling of Jigar and me is so cool and stylish. Plus the Istanbul factor has added everything to the song. It was beautiful. First, we didn't have to worry about the heat, so we were not sweating (laughs). It was cold and chilly and amazing for the song's mood. We shot for two days. What's the best part about this song according to you?I think what really works well in the video is the fact that Jigar and I are ourselves in the video. Music videos are hardly two to three minutes' duration and in that time you have to tell a whole story. So, it has to be very sweet and simple and we kept it like that - a girl and a boy meet, break up and meet again. What's been the response you've been getting?I was shooting in London for my film and I didn't even get the chance to send the video to everyone. But all my actor friends are messaging me after seeing it on social media or on my Instagram. It's a great deal for them to call or message me that they are listening to it on loop! It's organically happening, I'm not having to ask someone to watch it.What are you working on next?I'm shooting for my first Bollywood film with Bejoy Nambiar called Taish. I'm opposite Harshvardhan Rane and it also stars Pulkit Samrat, Jim Sarbh and Kriti Kharbanda. I can't talk more about the character but I can promise that I won't disappoint my audience. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg promotes free speech; no questions from press

'It's quite ironic,' said Sally Hubbard, director of the enforcement strategy at the Open Markets Institute and a former state prosecutor. More generally, she said of Facebook, 'The key to free expression is to not have one company control the flow of speech to more than 2 billion people, using algorithms that amplify disinformation in order to maximize profits.' Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other companies are trying to oversee internet content while also avoiding infringing on First Amendment rights. The pendulum has swung recently toward restricting hateful speech that could spawn violence. The shift follows mass shootings in which the suspects have posted racist screeds online or otherwise expressed hateful views or streamed images of attacks. Facebook also has come under criticism for not doing enough to filter out phony political ads. 'Right now, we're doing a very good job at getting everyone mad at us,' Zuckerberg told the packed hall at Georgetown. He said serious threats to expression are coming from places such as China, where social media platforms used by protesters are censored, and from court decisions restricting the location of internet users' data in certain countries. 'I'm here today because I believe that we must continue to stand for free expression,' he said. People of varied political beliefs are trying to define expansive speech as dangerous because it could bring results they don't accept, Zuckerberg said. 'I personally believe this is more dangerous to democracy in the long term than almost any speech.' Taking note of mounting criticism of the market dominance of Facebook and other tech giants, Zuckerberg acknowledged the companies' centralized power but said it's also 'decentralized by putting it directly into people's hands. … Giving people a voice and broader inclusion go hand in hand.' John Stanton, a former fellow at Georgetown who heads a group called the 'Save Journalism Project,' called the CEO's appearance 'a joke.' Zuckerberg 'is the antithesis of free expression,' Stanton said in a statement. 'He's thrown free speech, public education and democracy to the wayside in his thirst for power and profit.' The social media giant, with nearly 2.5 billion users around the globe, is under heavy scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators following a series of data privacy scandals, including lapses in opening the personal data of millions of users to Trump's 2016 campaign. Facebook and other social media platforms have drawn accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that their platforms are steeped in anti-conservative bias. Zuckerberg recently fell into a tiff with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, who ran a fake political ad on Facebook taking aim at the CEO. Warren has proposed breaking up big tech companies. With the phony ad, she was protesting Facebook's policy of not fact-checking politicians' speech or ads in the same way it enlists outside parties to fact-check news stories and other posts. 'We think people should be able to see for themselves,' Zuckerberg responded Thursday on the fact-checking issue. 'If content is newsworthy, we don't take it down even if it goes against our standards.' The social media network also rebuffed requests that it remove a misleading video ad from Trump's re-election campaign targeting Democrat Joe Biden. A spokesman for Biden said Zuckerberg's speech was an effort 'to cloak Facebook's policy in a feigned concern for free expression.' 'Facebook has chosen to sell Americans' personal data to politicians looking to target them with disproven lies and conspiracy theories, crowding out the voices of working Americans,' campaign spokesman Bill Russo said in a statement. Several of the students' questions to Zuckerberg at Georgetown pointed up the conflict. One asked, if Facebook supports free speech, 'why is conservative content disproportionately censored?' But another asserted that the policy of not fact-checking political ads is pro-conservative. 'I think it would be hard to be biased against both sides,' Zuckerberg replied, smiling. Asked about the handling of questions, Facebook spokeswoman Ruchika Budhjara said, 'They were submitted by students as they walked into the room. And they're being picked at random by Georgetown.' Liverpool strike late, but winning run ends in 1-1 draw at Manchester United

The two most successful sides in English football could not have come into the game in more contrasting form. However, United answered Solskjaer's calls to rise to the occasion. Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah through injury and the Egyptian's pace and trickery was badly missed. The visitors were able to welcome back goalkeeper Alisson Becker for the first time in two months after a calf injury, but the Brazilian was rarely tested as United were happy to sit back and counter-attack. Solskjaer changed his formation to a 3-5-2 in an attempt to limit Liverpool's flying full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson and it was largely effective as the hosts restricted the league leaders to precious few chances. Liverpool's best opening before the break came when Sadio Mane finally found some space to counter-attack, but from his cut-back Roberto Firmino fired too close to David de Gea. United had not scored in their two previous matches prior to the international break, but finally produced a moment of quality going forward to take the lead, even if fortune was also on their side for the goal to stand. Victor Lindelof looked to have upended Divock Origi on halfway, but no foul was given by Martin Atkinson and as United broke forward, Daniel James's cross perfectly picked out Rashford to prod past Alisson. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was furious on the touchline even before a VAR review failed to overturn the decision. The visitors' frustration only grew moments later when Mane outmuscled Lindelof to turn in what he thought was an equaliser, only for VAR to this time rule the goal out for a handball by the Senegalese. Klopp sprinted down the touchline at the half-time whistle, but was unable to change the pattern of the game after the interval as Liverpool continued to dominate possession without creating many chances. Indeed United could have doubled their advantage when Rashford and Fred fired shots just wide of Alisson's goal on the counter-attack. Lallana had played just 10 minutes in the Premier League this season prior to coming off the bench 20 minutes from time. But he was in the right place at the right time to make a telling contribution in the title race as he tapped home at the back post from Andy Robertson's cross. United were than camped inside their own box for five minutes of stoppage time. Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain was inches away from a winner as his driven shot flew just wide and United had another VAR review go their way deep into added time when Fred was adjudged to have played the ball with his shoulder rather than an arm inside the area. kca/dj MANCHESTER UNITED DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. The significance of the vote | HT editorial

This has happened due to a combination of national factors (Mr Modi's appeal; the discourse on nationalism; and the effectiveness of the central government's welfare schemes) and state-level factors (the perception of integrity of both CMs and sharper delivery of services). But it has also happened because of the collapse of the Opposition in both states. In Haryana, the Congress has been embroiled in an internal battle, and the leading regional formation, led by Om Prakash Chautala, has fragmented. In Maharashtra, too, the Congress' ability to put up a strong fight is near absent even though the Nationalist Congress Party, suffering from debilitating desertions, is battling it out more vigorously. But if the elections will give a sense of the dynamic in both the ruling and Opposition parties, it is also significant because of the social churn it will reflect. The BJP has constructed a coalition of non-dominant castes in both states (non-Jat in Haryana, non-Maratha in Maharashtra). In both, it is now seeking to make inroads into these traditionally dominant castes. Will it succeed? If it does, the BJP will indeed end up becoming a truly inclusive Hindu party across caste groups in both states. At the same time, a worrying trend in Indian politics — of the diminishing representation of Muslims — looks set to continue. This has social implications because access to power to diverse groups has kept up their faith in democratic procedures and helped maintain inter-community harmony. But as citizens vote today, it is once again a reminder that India's electoral democracy is robust, enabling people to exercise their fundamental right in choosing who governs them.
