'Job loss to steer poll'

People are really worried about their bread and butter and do not want to go into the whys and wherefores of whether this is a local problem or global. They only know that the government has failed in ensuring their job safety," Mishra said. He added that Adityapur and Gamharia, comprising the Adityapur Industrial Area, in all had over 1 lakh voters, a big chunk of the 3-lakh-plus electorate in Seraikela. What makes the election interesting in Seraikela, the district headquarters of Seraikela-Kharsawan, some 40km west of Jamshedpur, is that the BJP has still not announced its candidate.A BJP leader based in Adityapur admitted the delay."In the 2014 Assembly polls, we lost Seraikela by a margin of only 1,115 votes and we would have had a strong chance of wresting the seat from the JMM. Delay in announcing our party candidate, even as the JMM candidate has started campaigning, is creating confusion among workers," he said. BJP state general secretary Dipak Prakash said the name for Seraikela constituency could happen any moment. But an insider said BJP leader Ganesh Mahali, who gave a strong fight to five-time sitting MLA Champai Soren, had been a front-runner for the ticket but chief minister Raghubar Das apparently wanted Jamshedpur-based tribal leader Ramesh Hansdah. RSS leader and former Seraikela MLA Anant Ram Tuddu is also in the reckoning.JMM candidate Champai Soren, on his campaign trail, said: "We are focusing on the wrong policies of the BJP government which led to the auto slowdown," he said. Soap opera saga

I stomp my foot, cry, demand and cajole my favourite Gods if things are not going my way and, just as often, give thanks for the many wonderful gifts in my life. As I have grown older, my relationship with God has become mellower, and I have definitely become less demanding and more understanding. I firmly believe there must be a greater plan in place for me. It is ironical because as my kids grow older, their relationship with me has metamorphosed in exactly the same way! But that didn't stop me from making an unreasonable demand from the heavens. I all but insisted for great weather in Mumbai where I am parked for the next two weeks. And lo and behold! It has been raining every day in muggy Mumbai, and I haven't de-generated into a puddle of sweat! A little cajoling always helps. There are advantages to schooling your children in strict no-nonsense Catholic schools. For eons now, the matrimonial columns have been asking for 'soft spoken convent educated' girls. It's a total fallacy, because neither my daughter Alisha nor I are pliable; in fact, we and many like us are a tad bit too outspoken! We (convent-educated girls and boys) converse and write with an enviable fluency, are polite and have that certain grace of spirit which is undeniable. The direct contrast between my son (who went to a highfalutin international school) and my daughter is very evident, especially during an argument. Alisha will back down gracefully if things get ugly but Adnan will go for the jugular. A contrast, but I still wouldn't change the either of them for all the riches of the world. Alisha and my son-in-law, Anees, insisted I come to Mumbai to spend my birthday, and celebrate Diwali with them. Since my son is at a university in England, I jumped at their offer. Mumbai is a city that holds special memories for me, and my emotional umbilical cord is still uncut. A lot has changed, but some things are still achingly familiar. What I love most about Mumbai is the industriousness of its people and the pride they have in their city. I went to see playwright Mahesh Dattani's epic play, Dance like a Man, in the newly-renovated Opera House, which used to be a crumbling decrepit theatre showing old Hindi movies. The theatre that was beautiful in the early 1900s has been totally re-furbished and restored to its former glory. The stately lady, whose interiors once smelled suspiciously like an old bathroom, is now a centre for theatre and other artistic performances. A lovely café served hot coffee and snacks where everyone stood in a civilised queue. The polite staff even offered you umbrellas to shield you from the pouring rain. Immediately in my mind's eye there was a comparison to my hometown Bangalore and what was done to the stately Opera House at the end of Brigade Road. The once landmark and heritage structure has now been turned into a 'millennium hub'. I suppose we should be grateful that they restored the facade! In the hallowed precincts of Opera House in Mumbai, I revelled in the company of fellow performing artistes, the lovely Lillete Dubey, Suchitra Pillai and Anant Mahadevan (all of whom I have worked with), and chatted animatedly with doyens like Dolly Thakore and Mahesh Dattani. Evolve we must, but with compassion and grace.Till next week, light and love. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. 'Vaginal delivery, breastfeeding reduces risk of allergy and asthma in children'

'I think there's some pretty good evidence now — from animal models and associations in humans — to suggest that the birth canal is probably the source of microbial introduction,' said study researcher David Hill, MD, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Again, children who were exclusively breastfed were found to have reduced rate of one, two and three conditions. Supplemental breastfeeding (giving additional milk aside from breast milk to a breastfed baby due to latching or supply issues) protected against the development of a single allergic condition. For kids who got two or more conditions, supplemental breastfeeding had no effect. Can breast pumps increase the risk of asthma, obesity in babies? 'It is nice to see that even supplemented-breastfed babies benefit. I was surprised to see the degree of this benefit,' Hill added. The study was presented at the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology Scientific Meeting. Hyderabad Water Board launches VDS from November 22

JNU announces roll back of fee hike, students vow to continue protest On Monday, around 1,500 students had gathered outside AICTE building, the venue of the university's third convocation, and shouted slogans against the changes in hostel rules. The protesters had refused to let the guest of honour and Union Human Resources Development minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' and vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar and other dignitaries leave for several hours. Minor clashes took place between the students and police during the protest. The guests, later, had to be rescued by Delhi police officers and were escorted out by security personnel at around 4.15pm. The decision to revoke the fee hike was taken at the university's 283rd Executive Council (EC) meeting on Wednesday amid high drama. The administration also rolled back the one-time refundable mess security deposit for students of all categories from the proposed Rs 12,000 to the existing amount of Rs 5,500. The monthly rent for single-seater and double-seater rooms will hence continue to remain Rs 600 and Rs 300 respectively, for all students having Junior Research Fellow (JRF), Senior Research Fellow (SRF) and equivalent fellowships or scholarships. Students who are from the BPL category will have to pay half this amount. Earlier, students were paying Rs 20 and Rs 10 for single and double-seater rooms respectively. JNU registrar Pramod Kumar explained that all students from BPL category — excluding those who have JRF, SRF and other equivalent fellowships or scholarships — will be eligible for a 50% fee concession. BPL students receiving non-NET fellowship and merit-cum-means scholarships, which range between Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000, will also be eligible for the concession. The administration, however, has not given any clarification over the newly introduced component of service charge of Rs 1,700. 'The service charge will vary from hostel to hostel. Each hostel will divide the entire monthly charge among the total number of students it accommodates. BPL student will be given 50% concession on that as well,' the registrar said. Kumar said that the new fee structure will come into force from the 2020-21 academic session. 'We will follow the Central government's standards according to which student will be eligible to avail concession under BPL category. There will be enough time for students to get their certificates in order by the next academic session,' he said. JNU students' union (JNUSU) members, however, said the partial rollback was a gimmick and they would continue protesting. 'The university got the news [of fee roll back] out through the MHRD. This shows they (the JNU administration) have lost all credibility. With this new fee structure, the administration is trying to mislead students. We have been saying from day one that there should not be two fee structures on campus. Our protest will continue.' said Satish Chandra Yadav, JNUSU general secretary. On Wednesday, students also painted walls and floors of the admin building with slogans against the current administration and put soot on their names. Amid chants of azadi to study, students also hung banners denouncing the fee hike and calling for removal of the vice chancellor. Different corners of the admin block, including the entrance to offices of JNU administration, were filled with slogans condemning privatisation of education and demanding free education for all. In July, the administration had prohibited pasting of posters and banners on walls within campus and asked students to put them only on designated boards. Three elected representatives of the Executive Council, the university's highest decision-making body, also questioned the legality of decisions taken during Wednesday's meeting because five EC members were not present. The three members — Moushumi Basu, Sachidanand Sinha, and Baviskar Sharad Pralhad — said in a statement, 'We were deprived of their right to participate in the deliberations of the Executive Council on important matters concerning the university.' JNU's vice chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar appealed to students to call off their protests and get back to their classes. 'Major concessions have been given to students belonging to BPL category and clauses related to dressing and hostel timings have been removed from the hostel manual as per feedback from the students,' he said. Parcel priority for India Post

We are developing our own warehousing capabilities that will take time. We are also looking at inter-circle movement of parcel mail by road transport," said Gautam Bhattacharya, the chief postmaster general of the Bengal circle. At a session of the Merchants Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bhattacharya said from November, the department has introduced road transport from Calcutta to three locations with plans to add Ranchi as the volume grows. "For the railways now there are other priorities. Earlier, we used to have a full parcel van, whereas today it has come down to half or a quarter sometimes with the railways not in a position to spare that much space. For the airways, perishable goods get a higher preference. As a result, there is accumulation at our end. So, it has been decided to develop our own system to tackle the increased volume of parcel mail," Bhattacharya said. The Bengal circle has identified Calcutta, Siliguri and Durgapur as three major parcel hubs with spokes located at different cities to facilitate the movement of parcels. The department earned a revenue of Rs 98.45 crore in 2018-19 (up to February 2019) from business and express parcels. The market for parcels in the country is growing at a compounded rate of 15 per cent and is estimated to reach Rs 60,000 crore by 2026 from Rs 18,000 crore. India Post holds a market share of around 4 per cent by volume and around 5 per cent by revenues. The department is eyeing a 15 per cent market share by 2026. Shami-mantra: Stay in line & let things fall into place

My thought process is to bowl lines that are as tight as possible. That makes the job easier."I've been using the width of the crease for the last two years. Things are falling into place doing so," he stressed.Led by Shami, India's quicks shared seven wickets among themselves in the first innings with the hosts firmly in the driving seat."When you take a wicket for India, you feel so well. When our unit, be it bowlers or batsmen, does well, we all enjoy and savour each other's success," Shami said.
