Women taking OCP has smaller hypothalamus volume
This may be in part because validated methods to quantitatively analyze MRI exams of the hypothalamus have not been available. Michael L. Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., FACR, professor of radiology at the Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center said, "There is a lack of research on the effects of oral contraceptives on this small but essential part of the living human brain, we validated methods for assessing the volume of the hypothalamus and confirm, for the first time, that current oral contraceptive pill usage is associated with smaller hypothalamic volume." In his study, Dr Lipton and colleagues recruited a group of 50 healthy women, including 21 women who were taking oral contraceptives. All 50 women underwent brain MRI, and a validated approach was used to measure hypothalamic volume. "We found a dramatic difference in the size of the brain structures between women who were taking oral contraceptives and those who were not," Dr Lipton said. "This initial study shows a strong association and should motivate further investigation into the effects of oral contraceptives on brain structure and their potential impact on brain function." Other findings from the study, which Dr Lipton described as "preliminary," were that smaller hypothalamic volume was also associated with greater anger and showed a strong correlation with depressive symptoms. However, the study found no significant correlation between hypothalamic volume and cognitive performance. ... Ranji Trophy: Game time for Test specialists, opportunity and hope for rest
With India playing two Tests against New Zealand, starting from third-week of February, the likes of Pujara (for Saurashtra), Ajinkya Rahane (Mumbai), Mayank Agarwal (Karnataka) Ravichandran Ashwin (Tamil Nadu), Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma (both rested on BCCI advice for their respective first games) are expected to feature in a significant number of games during the first two months. And sooner than later, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are expected to play a few games to test their fitness before they are back in the national fold. Their presence will only lift the profile of the tournament as well as making it competitive. With Mayank grabbing his spot in the Indian team, he would relish the challenge of facing Ravichandran Ashwin, expected to come up with a bagful of tricks when Karnataka take on Tamil Nadu in a high-profile group B clash in Dindigul. Ashwin against Mayank and back in-form Karun Nair will be the marquee duel in the first-round games. Similarly, Rahane and Shaw will have their own checklists when Mumbai take on Baroda in an away match. Having made an impressive return in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 post doping ban, Shaw will be vying for the third opener's slot in the Test side or at least a place back in the India 'A' squad for the "shadow tour" of New Zealand in January. He will face stiff competition from Gujarat's Priyank Panchal, Bengal's Abhimanyu Easwaran and his former India U-19 teammate Shubman Gill of Punjab, who many consider to be as talented as the Mumbaikar if not more. Rahane, on his part, will like to make some big hundreds and see if he can sneak into the white ball squad in the wake of some good red ball performance even though it is highly improbable at the moment. For Pujara, it couldn't have been a better place to play the first game as Saurashtra take on Himachal Pradesh at Dharamsala in chilly conditions where Rishi Dhawan and company are expected to make the ball talk. A three-figure mark will be a special one as it will be his 50th first-class hundred. For Delhi, where off-field drama dominates news space, the team sans Ishant Sharma, who is expected to play some of the later games, will be banking on their pace trio of Navdeep Saini, Pradeep Sangwan and Pawan Suyal to unsettle a Kerala line-up which has the likes of Vishnu Vinod, Sachin Baby and Jalaj Saxena. Dhruv Shorey, Hiten Dalal and Nitish Rana will be hoping to give good account of themselves against Sandeep Warrier's back-of-the-length stuff and Basil Thampi's pace. Last but not the least is two-time defending champions Vidarbha, who probably will depend on Rajnish Gurbani's seam-up stuff in the absence of Umesh Yadav. But all eyes will be on 41-year-old Jaffer, who is only 853 runs shy of 20,000 first-class runs. Jaffer's insatiable appetite for runs, Ashwin's knack of showing who's the boss, Shaw's audacious strokeplay are what will make the months of December, January and February special. Malta PM Joseph Muscat to resign amid journalist murder probe protests
The announcement came after two weeks of mounting pressure and popular protests calling for Muscat to quit for his handling of the probe into Caruana Galizia's car bomb killing. Muscat said he would resign after his successor is chosen by January 12. Earlier Sunday, the Labour leader got the unanimous backing of part MPs at an emergency meeting called a day after tycoon Yorgen Fenech was charged with complicity in the murder. A court has also frozen Fenech's assets. The investigation has rocked the southern Mediterranean island, reaching the highest echelons of government. Critics including members of Caruana Galizia's family have accused Muscat, 45, of protecting those involved in murdering the popular journalist and blogger who exposed cronyism and sleaze within the tiny country's political and business elite. Meeting at Muscat's summer home, MPs on Sunday agreed to reinstate Chris Cardona as economy minister and deputy leader. Cardona had announced last week that he was "suspending himself" as the investigation into the killing of Caruana Galizia, a mother-of-three, in a brutal attack implicated top government officials. Last week, the scandal claimed the scalps of Muscat's top aide Keith Schembri and the former tourism minister, Konrad Mizzi. Police sources said Fenech had identified Schembri as the "real mastermind" behind the killing. - 'One-woman WikiLeaks' - Caruana Galizia, described as a "one-woman WikiLeaks", accused Schembri of corruption along with Mizzi and Cardona. Caruana Galizia's family and thousands of protesters have repeatedly taken to the streets calling for Muscat's resignation. Protesters including Caruana Galizia's elderly parents on Sunday marched through central Valletta carrying signs reading "Mafia" and "Daphne was right", slamming Muscat as "an obstacle to justice". On Saturday, party insiders told AFP that Muscat was ready to go once those behind the killing had been charged. EU mission A European Parliament delegation is due to arrive on Malta late Monday and stay until Wednesday. Led by Dutch MEP Sophie in't Veld, it will examine doubts about the Judiciary's independence and investigate allegations of high-level corruption. "Malta is part of Europe," in't Veld tweeted. "This concerns us all." Leaked emails revealed in court indicated that both Schembri and Mizzi stood to receive payments from a Dubai company called 17 Black, owned by Fenech. The murder probe gained momentum following last week's arrest of the tycoon, whose business interests span the energy, casinos and tourism sectors. His detention came after an alleged middleman in the murder, taxi driver Melvin Theuma, was offered immunity in exchange for identifying others who were involved. Although Schembri, Muscat's former chief of staff, was arrested Tuesday, his release on Thursday sparked accusations of a cover-up. A Maltese court is expected to rule Monday on a request by Fenech for the chief investigator in the case, Keith Arnaud, to be removed amid allegations he also had close ties to Schembri and the prime minister. World leaders caught discussing Trump
Trump spoke to reporters for more than two hours in total on Tuesday, which appeared to astonish Trudeau."He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference at the top," Trudeau says to a small group that includes Macron and the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, among others. Trudeau does not mention Trump by name during the exchange, at which he appears to be discussing the day's bilateral meetings."You just watch his team's jaws drop to the floor," Trudeau says at another point. Macron is also seen participating animatedly in the conversation, but his comments cannot be heard. Johnson is seen smiling. None of the world leaders seem to realise the conversation is being recorded.Reacting to the video on Wednesday, Trump called Trudeau "two-faced". "Well, he's two-faced," the President said when asked about the video. After a long pause, he added, "He's a nice guy. I find him to be a very nice guy."Trump, who was taking questions from reporters ahead of a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, attributed Trudeau's frustration to the American leader's pressure campaign to increase Canada's military spending to 2 per cent of its economic output."He should be paying more than he's paying," Trump said. "I called him out on that, and I'm sure he wasn't happy about it, but that's the way it is."Trump was put on the defensive on Tuesday by Macron, who during a tense 45-minute appearance aggressively challenged the American President's vision for Nato and his handling of a military conflict involving Turkey. Trudeau participated in a more genial meeting with Trump later on Tuesday.Trump has long bridled at the idea of other world leaders poking fun at the US. "The world is laughing at us," he said frequently during his 2016 presidential campaign, criticising the leadership of President Barack Obama. In June 2017, when he announced that the US would withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, Trump said that "we don't want other leaders and other countries laughing at us any more. And they won't be. They won't be".In 2018, after laughter broke out at the UN General Assembly when Trump claimed his administration had "accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country", the President insisted that he was not the target. Healthy seeds: Why it's important to add these gems in your diet
It mentioned that 'methi dana (seeds)' water has the ability to lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. The seeds are known to contain fibre that can help to slow down digestion, reduce the rate at which your body absorbs sugar, and also increase the amount of insulin that your body releases. Many scientific studies have supported the fact that consumption of flaxseeds regularly can bring a significant improvement in high blood pressure levels. Eating flaxseeds regularly for six months can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 10 mmHg and 7 mmHg, respectively. However, if not chewed properly, they may not be digested and simply get washed out of your body. So it's a good idea to grind the seeds and add the powder to baked foods, oatmeal, cereals, smoothies or yoghurt. You can even add the powder to the dough for making rotis and pooris. Carom seeds, which are known as ajwain in India, help in keeping one's weight under check, which is important if you are diabetic. Half a glass of warm water with carom seeds can help in aiding smooth digestion. Dry roasted kalonji is used for flavouring curries, dal and stir-fried vegetables. Apart from this, it also acts as a key ingredient in kachoris and samosa. The tiny black seeds are loaded with trace elements, vitamins, crystalline nigellone, amino acids, saponin, crude fibre, proteins and fatty acids like linolenic and oleic acids, volatile oils, alkaloids, iron, sodium, potassium and calcium. It keeps your heart healthy, addresses breathing problem, lubricates your joints, and is known to have anti-carcinogenic properties. Chia seeds are extremely healthy and can be addedto breakfast cereal, pudding, porridge, vegetable and rice dishes or yoghurt. Pine nuts contain beta-carotene and antioxidants that help in improving vision. The compound lutein present in it prevents our eyesight from getting damaged with age. Diabetics must include pine nuts in their everyday diet as it helps in controlling high glucose levels and also in the reduction of bad cholesterol. Containing vitamins E, K and magnesium, pine nuts help in lowering blood pressure levels and reduce the risk of heart attack. Pumpkin seeds have been found to contain properties that have blood glucose-lowering effect. These seeds are rich in dietary fibre too, a factor that is believed to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. Cumin seeds help in the secretion of various digestive enzymes in the pancreas that aid in digestion and absorption of nutrients. Enjoy the flavour and its benefits by adding roasted cumin or its grounded form in curd, buttermilk, shikanji, salad and soups. The seeds and oil from the black mustard plant are used to make medicine for common cold, painful joints and muscles (rheumatism), and even arthritis. It is also to relieve water retention (edema) by increasing urine production, and increasing appetite. Juanan fires Bengaluru FC to the top of ISL
The teams missed chances to score as Jerry Mawihmingthanga shot wide from a corner and Sunil Chhetri failed to hit the target from an Udanta Singh cross. With the contest heating up, centre-back Juanan showcased his centre-forward skills to give Bengaluru the lead. Nishu Kumar's lob into the box was flicked into the defender's path by Erik Paartalu before the Spaniard outfoxed Carlos Delgado to send a scuffed shot that went in off the post. The Blues had the chance to double their lead just before the break when Chhetri took advantage of a misplaced pass and charged at the Odisha defence. He spotted Udanta's run to his right and set him up for a shot, but the winger tried to return the favour and failed to find his teammate. Odisha stepped up their efforts and chased an equaliser after the break. In the 55th minute, Marcos Tebar's header forced a fantastic reflex save off Gurpreet. The ball fell at Diagne's feet, but the Bengaluru custodian pulled off another good save to deny the defender from close-range. Minutes later, Udanta found Chhetri in the centre whose shot was blocked by Delgado. The rebound was hit well by Dimas but Arshdeep Singh got his body behind the shot to save. The goalkeepers had a busy night in between the sticks. Gurpreet was vigilant in goal and kept out strikes from Marcos Tebar and Xisco to keep his team in the lead as the clock ticked towards the final whistle. At the other end, Bengaluru threatened through set-pieces and crosses from wide areas. Arshdeep did well to push behind Paartalu's powerful volley off Dimas' delivery from a corner-kick. Bengaluru, who were denied a second goal by the post from a good Dimas free-kick, looked to be the fitter team in the final minutes as they stood firm and defended well to prevent a late show.
