England mull all-pace attack
Broady, if he tells me he is fit then I have to believe him. He has got a lot of experience under his belt and he knows his body," Silverwood told reporters on Monday."Jofra has had two good days (in the nets) and as long as his pace is up and he feels good, then he will be a serious contender for selection."Silverwood admits an all-pace attack on what is traditionally a bouncy pitch on the Highveld is something they are considering."We are looking at what is most effective on this ground. We have got some good recent results from the spin-bowling department and (Jack) Leach is coming back to fitness, we also have Dominic Bess and Parky (Matthew Parkinson)," he said."We have got resources there, but we are just looking at what will be most effective in this game. We are not definitely going down the route of all seam, it is something we will discuss in the next few days."Other seam options include Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Craig Overton.Silverwood also had special praise for the efforts of Woakes and suggested he might shorten his length on the South African wickets to be more effective."We saw in the two-day fixture he did get aggressive for a while and it worked. It is something he has in his armoury and I think he enjoyed it."The coach said a drawn three-day match against South Africa A, which ended on Sunday, had been encouraging despite the absence of the three front-line bowlers. The first Test, from December 26-30, at Centurion is followed by matches at Newlands, St George's Park and the Wanderers. Pondicherry University student refuses gold medal in solidarity with protesting students
he also told the dignitary that she had earlier been led out of the auditorium and not allowed to re-enter until President Ram Nath Kovind had left. The President is the Visitor of the university."I was seated in the hall an hour before the President's arrival, as was required. But a woman from the President's security came up to me and asked me to go out with her for a minute. She then locked me out without any explanation," Rabeeha said. This newspaper could not elicit a response from Rashtrapati Bhavan till Monday night.Rabeeha said local policemen had tried to calm her down. "I am so thankful to the local police, many of whom came up to me and said even they were shocked to see that," said the girl from Kozhikode in Kerala who completed her mass communication postgraduate course in 2018.Rabeeha absolved the Pondicherry University of any wrongdoing. "This is not about the university, although I was not told why I was kept out."She added: "It was just that I wanted to sacrifice something in solidarity with the students who have risked everything to stand up for a cause."University registrar B. Chitra said she had no information about what really happened. "I was busy organising all the certificates and medals when I saw her saying something when she got on the stage," Chitra said. She said she could not hear what Rabeeha was telling the dignitary who was handing over the certificates after the President had left."Sometime later, I got to know that something had gone wrong and that this student had been sent out. By the time I could free myself and check on her, she had left the hall," the registrar said.Rabeeha feels that the President's security may have done a background check on all the students due to be at the event. "I have been very active with my comments on social media against several issues. That could be the reason I was locked out," she said.Another master's student had recently declared she would boycott the convocation of the Pondicherry University in protest against the amended citizenship act.Rabeeha, who has been working as a copywriter with an advertising agency, took to Facebook to explain why she had refused the gold medal."This is my way of showing the world what education means to us youths, not medals and certificates but learning the message of unity, peace and standing up against injustice, fascism and bigotry."Isn't that what education is all about? We need to stand up for everyone's rights."Asked if she had thought of boycotting the event as the members of the students' council did, Rabeeha said: "I wanted to be there since I had worked very hard for that certificate. But I also wanted to do something in solidarity with the protesting students who had to face so much difficulty."She lauded all those who had stood up to the violence unleashed by the policemen. "I see that Ayesha (Renna) and Ladeeda (Sakhaloon) have become heroes," she said, referring to the two students from Kozhikode who had stood up for their friends at Jamia. People unite to help Udupi man arrested in Saudi Arabia
When some Muslim youths from Mangaluru contacted their friends in Saudi and sought help for his release, several social media users came forward and tagged the Ministry of External Affairs seeking its help. Senior bureaucrats of Karnataka too chipped in. Bangera, working in Dammam in Saudi Arabia as an air-conditioning technician for seven years found himself in soup and his family back home is worried. They have claimed that his account was hacked or a fake account was created in his name. A family member told TNIE that he deactivated his Facebook account after viewers raised objections to his posts. Bangera had shared a post from someone's wall on violence in Mangaluru. Many people criticised it. He aired an apology on his account before deactivating it, the family member claimed. "Harish deactivated his account but after few hours a new account in his name emerged and it was full of hate posts. It is possible that someone may have used the photographs from Harish's previous account and used the same to spread hate. The original social media account of Harish had his family picture on profile, unlike the fake one which has his photograph. Hence we have complained to the local police seeking their intervention and another complaint was filed with Cyber Police of Udupi," the family member explained. Harish married Sumana nine years ago and couple has a two-year-old daughter. He was currently working in Gulf Carton Factory Co. Harish has a rented house in Bijadi near Koteshwara. Harish's wife, in her complaint to the police, has clarified that despite Harish deactivating his account, a fake ID was created in his name. "The company in which Harish was working has terminated him. We are in trouble and we have not heard from him since last three days. We are seeking help from the local organisations in Udupi and praying for his early release," added the family member. No detention centre? There is one right near Bengaluru
The centre, which stands in a half-acre and 20 guntas land, has five rooms where illegal immigrants and overstaying foreigners will be housed, a common kitchen and a common bathroom. What was once an OBC hostel is now busy with policemen patrolling the area and letting in only contract labourers, construction workers, electricians and plumbers. "It was a women's hostel earlier. The work started six months ago. The centre could be even inaugurated in the first week of January," said an employee who is in charge of construction. Even groceries have been stocked at the centre. A senior police officer said the five rooms have five beds each. The work pending relates to the completion of staff quarters and toilets. "Even that is almost done. Just plastering of the bathroom and staff quarters is to be completed. It will be done in another week's time," explained the officer. 'Centre might be opened anytime soon' Sources claim that the building might even be inaugurated anytime soon, probably on the New Year as the groceries have also been stored. Also, a police jeep with five policemen is guarding the place on a shift basis. According to locals, the entire construction work was done in a hush-hush manner ---even the local panchayat had no idea what was coming up there. A former Zilla Panchayat member said, "We wanted this building for the gram panchayat office but the social welfare department has not shared any details with us. And now a detention centre is coming up here." Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai had earlier said that NRC will definitely be implemented in Karnataka and construction of the detention centre has been almost completed. A huge database of illegal migrants is also being put together by the state. Bommai had recently said, "We are presently collecting information of all illegal immigrants, drug dealers from other countries who have been nabbed and also foreign nationals. A lot of them who have crossed the borders in South India have settled in Karnataka and it is the question of people's security." The state government had also recently told the Karnataka High Court that 612 cases have been registered against 866 foreigners for overstaying their visa period and for violation of various laws, including the provisions of Indian Penal Code and Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act till October 2019. Also the State Public Prosecutor (SPP)-II made a submission to that effect before Justice K N Phaneendra, during the hearing of bail applications filed by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants that 35 temporary foreigners' detention centres were identified in various districts and commissionerates across the state. When The New Indian Express asked a senior police officer how a detention centre that can house only 25 persons can accommodate many people who are detained, he said on the condition of anonymity, "This place is ready for now. There are other places too which we are trying to zero in on. This place also has scope for expansion. We will build more rooms if necessary."This building was re-purposed to be used as a detention centre during the coalition government. Rationalists to swim during solar eclipse on Dec 26
"There have been many cases where people do not step out of their homes, eat or even drink water when there is eclipse. We have heard cases where residents with pregnant women in houses shut all the doors to ensure no light can enter. People also believe that one may get skin diseases if we get into water during eclipses. Hence to create awareness among people about the superstitions associated with eclipses, I will be swimming along with my friends," he explained. About 30 people are expected to join Narendra Nayak in his swimming endeavour during eclipse. For many years, Nayak has been fighting superstitions with different themes. The members have also prepared food and served during last few eclipses. "The idea is to remove the superstitions about celestial events from the minds of people. For many years, a section of people have misused these events to create fear among people. Despite advent of information system, people keep falling for such tricks," he added. The event will be held at Corporation Swimming Pool in Mangaluru and will be followed by eclipse watching and snacks.
