Police to step up anti-Maoist drive to tackle menace

A senior police officer said Kabani Dalam was the first and prominent dalam set up by CPI (Maoists) in Kerala to expand its activities in the Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. "We have managed to weaken the activities of the dalam in the past three years through various counter operations. Identifying the members of the dalam was in itself a major challenge and the police now have a complete list of the members of all the dalams that included Kabani," said the officer. Apart from Kabani, the CPI (Maoists) has set up three more dalams in Kerala - Nadukani, Bhavani and Varahini.State police chief Loknath Behera said that wings engaged in anti-Maoist operations have been directed to remain vigilant and further strengthen their combing operations. "We have taken up the recent sightings of the Maoists as a major development and have issued appropriate directions to deal with it," Behera told TNIE. Intelligence agencies anticipate that the extremists would change their nature of operation in Kerala after three police encounters resulted in the death of seven Maoists. While they have been following an offensive strategy in other LWE-affected states by targeting the forces, no casualty has been reported in the state. Don't believe govt: Panel

he mills have been non-functional for the past few years.Addressing a news conference here, committee president Manabendra Chakra-borty said Union minister for heavy industries Prakash Javadekar on July 9 said in Parliament that Rs 4,141 crore invested in HPC during 2014-15 and 2018 and asked for a "white paper" on the utilisation of funds."But it is known that during this period both the industries remain closed and altogether 60 workers/employees have died since the mills ceased to function. Three committed suicide because of non -payment of salary for 36 months. Chief minister (Sarbananda Sonowal) should release white paper to disclose the huge funds of Rs 4,141 crore utilised or siphoned off or misused," he said.Cachar Paper Mill, the only major industrial undertaking in Barak Valley, is located at Panchgram in Hailakandi district. The Nagaon mill is at Jagiroad in Morigaon district."Prime Minister Narendra Modi betrayed the people of Assam by disrespecting his own commitment to revive the industries committed on March 27 in 2016. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal also betrayed his repeated commitments delivered for the revival of the two paper industries of Assam. Both of them invariably misused their power to destroy both the industries and source of employments of two lakh youths and destroyed the rural economy of the state," he said.Chakraborty also said the industries with a value of more than Rs 5,000 crore was "going to be sold to favoured cronies" with nominal price of scrap materials."People involved in the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest should not be swayed by the commitments being made by the government at present. Hence, they have lost all the credibility to be believed in any issue related to Assam and the Northeast," he said. The committee also expressed solidarity with the struggle against the amended citizenship act."We also paid our tributes to those who sacrificed their life in the movement against the CAA to protect the interest of Assam, its citizens, culture and heritage. We support all the struggles to save interest of Assam, its citizens, culture, employments and heritage," he said. New device to help people with swallowing problems

"We want to provide a reliable, patient-friendly and affordable way to treat the millions of people with swallowing disorders," said Malandraki. "Many devices to help these people are expensive, not able to be taken home and not accessible in many rural areas." The researchers have created a skin-mountable sensor sticker that attaches firmly to the neck area and is connected with small cables to a wireless transmitter unit. The skin-mountable sensor sticker measures and records muscle activity and movement associated with swallowing. The information is then sent wirelessly by a separate unit clipped on the wearer's shirt to software that stores it for later analysis by a doctor. Successful completion of a swallow requires the precise coordination of more than 30 pairs of muscles of the head and neck, six pairs of cranial nerves, and complex circuitry in the brainstem and several brain areas. Any disruption in these pathways can result in severe swallowing disorders. "Our device is unique in that we specifically created it to work well with the small and intricate muscles associated with swallowing events," Lee said. "The sensor sticker is stretchable and flexible to work well with the skin and curvilinear head and neck shape, while the connected unit has electronic chips and more rigid components," added Lee. The sensor stickers are disposable, designed with inexpensive components and meant to be used about 10 times before they are thrown away. ... Be it running an errand or carrying out household fixtures, you can get your child to help you or just accompany you for the activity. What adults may otherwise find boring can sometimes excite kids. Children love to hear stories. So, next time you put them to bed, narrate to them an imaginative story or read to them from a book. You can also take out time on weekends and play board games with them. Instead of just sending your child out to play, you can sometimes tag along to watch them or even play a sport with the kids on occasion as a way of encouraging them. New dads may not feel an instant bonding with the baby Give the mother a break and make an effort to find out what your kids are studying at the moment, help them prepare their lessons and also clear their doubts if any. This can help you bond with your child better. Talk to your child, even if for five minutes, to know what they are thinking or feeling, ask them about school or how they spent the day. Delhi court rejects bail pleas of 15 held for Old Delhi violence over CAA

The public prosecutor argued that the accused were at the forefront of stone-pelting incident. While seeking bail, senior advocate Rebecca John said the accused should not be kept behind bars since police did not have CCTV footage or other evidence against them. She told the court that police do not know that the Constitution allows people to protest, and that the men were picked up randomly by Delhi Police after they had offered Friday prayers at Jama Masjid. 'Why are they charged with criminal conspiracy and common intention, these men don't even know each other,' John told the court. John also told the court that there were videos showing police violence but no one had enquired into that. She also argued that police never asked for their custodial interrogation but rather for judicial custody, and submitted that the detainees were never required for interrogation. 'IPC Section 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc) does not apply. Do they have any proof, CCTV footage, etc against them,' John asked. John asked how the police narrowed down their list to 15 persons: 'The complaint itself says there was a raging crowd. Police selectively arrested some people… If the situation was so severe, why were these people not arrested immediately? Why were they kept in police station overnight without arrest?' She added that police were not able to establish the offence mentioned in the FIR, and after perusing the arrest memo, added that their 'entire case has been falsified'. One of the arrested had claimed he was a juvenile. However, police said he told them he was 23. Reducing men in neurology workforce to widen gender gap

Brashear said, "Burnout among all physicians and the persistent predominance of men in the neurology workforce are widening the gender gap, at a critical time when the demand for neurologists is only expected to increase." Reducing the gender gap in neurology means addressing a variety of factors, from burnout and women leaving the field, to the difference in pay between male and female neurologists - a gap which is one of the largest in any medical speciality. "As women increasingly make up medical school classes, choose medical fields in which they can earn the same salaries as their male colleagues, seek positions that provide flexibility in workload and work hours, and retire before 65 years of age, the speciality needs to evolve to both meet these needs and prevent the burnout that may result in early retirement and part-time status," Schor said. Brashear talks of how many women physicians, nurses have to deal with larger clinical workloads, longer clinical hours, lower salaries and more personal caregiving and homemaking duties than their male counterparts. According to the authors, identifying and mitigating these factors may help narrow the gender gap and increase the supply of neurologists to better meet future patient needs. They suggest structuring positions to give more time to complete administrative tasks, offering more flexible work hours, providing daycare at the workplace, setting salaries at a level that encourages hiring help for daily tasks and chores in the home, and making it routine for all early-career neurologists (men and women) to have mentors for personal and career support. ... England mull all-pace attack

Broady, if he tells me he is fit then I have to believe him. He has got a lot of experience under his belt and he knows his body," Silverwood told reporters on Monday."Jofra has had two good days (in the nets) and as long as his pace is up and he feels good, then he will be a serious contender for selection."Silverwood admits an all-pace attack on what is traditionally a bouncy pitch on the Highveld is something they are considering."We are looking at what is most effective on this ground. We have got some good recent results from the spin-bowling department and (Jack) Leach is coming back to fitness, we also have Dominic Bess and Parky (Matthew Parkinson)," he said."We have got resources there, but we are just looking at what will be most effective in this game. We are not definitely going down the route of all seam, it is something we will discuss in the next few days."Other seam options include Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Ben Stokes, Mark Wood and Craig Overton.Silverwood also had special praise for the efforts of Woakes and suggested he might shorten his length on the South African wickets to be more effective."We saw in the two-day fixture he did get aggressive for a while and it worked. It is something he has in his armoury and I think he enjoyed it."The coach said a drawn three-day match against South Africa A, which ended on Sunday, had been encouraging despite the absence of the three front-line bowlers. The first Test, from December 26-30, at Centurion is followed by matches at Newlands, St George's Park and the Wanderers.
