Winter blues? Lack of sunshine leaves many in city depressed

City doctors point out that women are more susceptible and the age of onset is estimated to be between 18 and 30 years, but can affect any age group. Dr Diwakar Goutham N., Consultant Neuropsychiatry at Narayana Health City said, 'SAD is a condition affecting people of all age group perhaps more common in middle age. It is a kind of depression which mostly happens during the seasonal changes, especially winters, as the change in weather has an impact on mood and overall metabolic system. This condition could trigger due to deficiency of light and lack of Vitamin D.' SAD symptoms include a depressed mood, feeling of hopelessness, a lack of energy, difficulty in concentrating, changes in sleep pattern and appetite, loss of pleasure in activities you once loved, and even thoughts of death or suicide. Certain hormonal changes in the brain trigger SAD, said Dr Sheethal Brahmesh, Consultant - Internal medicine & Health check at Apollo Hospitals, Seshadripuram. "Serotonin is a hormone that affects our mood, appetite and sleep; a lack of sunlight may lead to underproduction of serotonin which in turn disrupts the pathways in the brain that regulate mood. Melatonin is a hormone that makes us feel sleepy; in people with SAD, the body may produce it in higher than normal levels. Also, light affects the biological clock in our brains that regulates circadian rhythms - a physiological function that may include mood changes when exposed to less sunlight,' she added. While Dr Kiran Kumar K., MD (Psychiatry) at Narayana Multi-speciality Hospital, Whitefield highlighted that people who have been diagnosed with any form of depression or stress conditions are at a higher risk of SAD. 'One should not take this condition too lightly, especially if the feeling of hopelessness is predominant, as it could also lead to suicidal thoughts. We see almost 1-2 cases in a month in winters and in the last five years we have seen almost 10% increase in such cases,' he said. Experts say that staying hydrated, ensuring a balanced diet, incorporating lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise, meditation and essential exposure to sunlight will help manage SAD. 'Professional consultation and family support is of utmost importance. Various treatment modalities are available which includes psychotherapy, light therapy, and medications,' they added. GST rates may get political tinge in election year

To counter the states' revenue impact argument, the Centre has started asserting — though not that openly at the moment — that any standard rate above 12 per cent would neutralise their losses. However, the GST council's fitment committee would take a final decision with all states on board, sources said. Earlier the finance minister said the idea (15 per cent rate) would have to await stabilisation of revenue flows. Niti Aayog also has backed this figure in its inputs to the finance ministry. The political angle to the move to make the GST council deliberate it could be the Congress bid to hijack the single rate issue ahead of the general elections. The single rate gained momentum following the finance minister talking about it after prime minister Narendra Modi spoke of simplifying GST rates further and put 99 per cent of items in the 18 per cent or below that GST slab. Though BJP-ruled states still outnumber states ruled by other parties, winning GST council's approval for the move would not be an easy task. The recent decision on cement rate demonstrated states' stand on opposing any free-run to the Centre citing revenue implications. According to a SBI research report, indirect tax mop-up in FY19 may fall short by Rs 90,000 crore. The next GST council meeting is scheduled in January where a new composition scheme will be framed for small services providers. Taxation on lottery is also on the meeting agenda. At present, GST on state-organised lotteries is 12 per cent and state-authorised lotteries 28 per cent. The 32nd council meet will also take up the MSME threshold limit. ... Major features of the 2019 iPhone XI leak

The report states that Bloomberg has got in touch with a source at Sony and they have confirmed that Apple will be integrating a long distance 3D camera in the 2019 iPhone. With this technology fitted in the next crop of iPhones, it has the possibility to transform photography, security and gaming. Satoshi Yoshihara, head of Sony's sensor division said, 'Cameras revolutionised phones and based on what I've seen, I have the same expectation for 3D [cameras].' The report goes on to detail that Sony will be commencing mass production of the 3D sensors for front and rear cameras in the late summer to meet demand. Apple has shown interest in utilising this technology and Sony will be ready with the modules by the time the production of the next iPhone is underway. Explaining the difference, the report states, 'Sony's 3D cameras use 'Time of Flight' technology (previously used only in the industry). It sends out invisible laser pulses and measures the time before they bounce back to build detailed 3D models of objects up to five metres away.' The uses of this technology span far and wide and in terms of photography, focusing can happen instantaneously as well as object tracking can take place even in low lit environments. As far as security is concerned, the 3D cameras can be used for high-grade facial mapping and unlocking. This will reduce the need for the multi-sensor array currently used by Apple for its Face ID tech. Eventually, this implantation will be used to shrink the notch, or even have the possibility to remove it altogether. The 3D camera can also be used for mapping of rooms for AR and VR purposes and it also has interactive capabilities wherein a user's hands can be used to manipulate a gaming environment. Apart from the new camera sensors, it is also believed that Apple may bring back the much-loved Touch ID feature and fit it in the display itself. However, they will not go the way of Vivo or OnePlus, but instead include an ultrasonic in-display sensor, the same one that's rumoured to feature in Samsung's next flagship — the Galaxy S10. ...
