While both are styles of prayer, the fundamental distinction between meditation and contemplation is that meditation is a human mode of prayer whereas contemplation is divinely infused. It means that during meditation one uses pictures, ideas and reasoning to essentially consider created things on the subject of God via human effort. Such an hobby can open us to interior devotion and longing for God and directing our lives. Interestingly, meditation is supposed to result in contemplative prayer.
