Pune had a lot more open spaces when I was young, so I'd spend my time going on adventures with friends. It was only in college that I started to play guitar and formed a band, Khadki Junction Blues, with my friend and collaborator — Bhrigu Sahni.' Karan's earliest memories of music would be the music his parents played on vinyl records and cassette tapes. He vividly remembers listening to artistes such as The Beatles, Queen, Michael Jackson, and more, when he would go driving on a holiday. He adds, 'As a child, I studied speech, drama and elocution at The St. Cecilia's School Of Music, Pune. There were always people playing and studying music around and a lot of our activities involved vocal/choral exercises. Even though I didn't begin studying music until I was 15, music was always around.' Having completed a degree in music production from Queensland University of Technology , Australia, Karan believes that understanding music theory adds to your musical vocabulary. 'I think of it as a language. The more words you know, will always help you speak with more command, and knowledge. Eloquence too, hopefully. I continue to study music whenever I'm free. One should never stop learning as the more you know, the less likely you are to repeat yourself and be stagnant in your expression,' adds Karan. Karan's Marathi connect began with Sachin Kundalkar's Happy Journey (2014) and is keen on working on more interesting regional projects. He believes each language has its own nuances and beauty and would love to explore on music that isn't just Hindi. A lot of his advertising work is in various languages and he has even sung for some of them. 'There is great work being done in the regional music industries. In Marathi, I like Ajay-Atul's music. Their sound is huge, rooted yet modern.' Karan's forthcoming projects include Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota which is directed by Vasan Bala. He is also working on music for some OTT platforms, films, and advertising. 'I hope to release some of my own music later this year, which will probably be R&B or electronic,' he concludes.
