Just did it: Nike's belated apology for discriminating against female athletes

Nike, of course, is not the only corporation to be accused of cutting deals that are biased against the very athletes it works with. A few years ago, Reebok and a popular mixed martial arts promotion company faced severe criticism for signing a deal under which women fighters would be treated unequally and earn significantly less than their male counterparts because of a tiered payment system based on the athletes' tenure. Such a system automatically put even highly-ranked women fighters with years of experience at a disadvantage simply because they had not been allowed to be a part of the company for as long as the men. The irony in such situations is not lost, especially in the case of Nike, which recently released a critically-acclaimed advertisement about women's empowerment. Was the pledge of empowerment hollow, catering to optics rather than meaningful transformation? Athletes who have signed endorsement contracts with large sportswear companies are dependent on them for the bulk of their income. Thus, even though remuneration ought to be based on nothing other than merit, sportspersons are forced to 'agree' to contractual terms that deny them autonomy even in the most personal of choices, such as the decision to give birth. Performance-based contracts must be more balanced and representative of the rights of the product endorsers - in this case, women athletes. Is there then a case for them to mobilize in order to create conditions under which the contracts they sign are rendered more equitable? If so, should sports bodies be brought in to mediate between athletes and corporations? This could be one way of ascertaining that agreements are made on fair terms so that both the generation of profit and the protection of rights are ensured. WATCH: Former Zimbabwe cricketer Henry Olonga stuns with audition on The Voice

Olonga last appeared on the international cricket stage in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup in a Super Six match against Kenya, before he was forced into exile from Zimbabwe in the twilight of his career for protesting against the then country's leader Robert Mugabe and 'the death of democracy in Zimbabwe'. He had worn a black armband as a sign of protest alongside former coach Andy Fowler at the World Cup in South Africa. What a privilege to be able to sing on this amazing stage. 'Inspired' by Jaish, Hizbul Mujahideen tried copycat attack on CRPF convoy in J-K

They were arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir police after the attack. An NIA officer said that Mantoo, a PhD student from Central University of Punjab who is believed to be close to the HM commander in South Kashmir, Dr Saifullah, was also confronted last week with overground workers (OGWs) of the outfit, identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, Zakir Hussain Mir, Rafiq Ahmad Magray and Alam Bhat. 'Most of them have claimed they received orders from the top brass of HM that the outfit needs to do something like Jaish did in Pulwama. They locally assembled a bomb using gelatin sticks, urea, ammonium nitrate, LPG cylinders and few other chemicals but it was not a perfect bomb. They say they wanted to gain international headlines so that Pakistan-based leader of HM Syed Salahuddin is praised in that country,' said the NIA officer. The incident happened on March 30, one-and-a-half months after the Pulwama attack, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed by a Jaish bomber. India responded 12 days later with an air strike on a Jaish facility in Balakot, Pakistan. At several points in those weeks, India and Pakistan were close to war. In the HM attack, a Santro car laden with explosives hit a CRPF bus around 10 am when the convoy was moving from Srinagar to Jammu. Nobody was injured in the incident. 'The Hizbul has not been able to carry out any major attack in Kashmir valley in the last three years since a concerted crackdown by the security forces. Their space has been occupied by JeM, which has mostly Pakistan-based cadres, so HM members were desperate to revive the group by doing something on the same lines. They could not carry it off,' a second NIA officer said. The central anti-terror probe agency is trying to find out if any JeM members were involved in the Banihal attack. Maoist 'mole' flees cops

The serial blasts had injured three police personnel, prompting an intensive combing operation in the entire region, which provoked a Maoist landmine ambush in nearby Kuchai on Tuesday, injuring 26 policemen. SP Sinha said Shambhu had external wounds on his stomach when he was caught, but when they started to fester, the youth was hospitalised. "He hoodwinked the police to flee from the hospital. We are probing into the incident and have suspended the six policemen deployed with him for dereliction of duty." Shambhu had been admitted to the hospital on May 24 and lodged in the first floor of the G+2 storey building, said a police source. He could have scaled down the hospital. Hunt is on for Shambhu. Seraikela subdivisional police officer Avinash Kumar added that they had also sent a recommendation for disciplinary action against the six policemen, ASI Jai Prakash Yadav, constables Shambhu Kumar, Tirumuni Raimundu, Mangal Murmu, Tarun Chandra Mahto and Mangal Munda. At Tuesday's Kuchai blast site, district police in a joint operation with CoBRA and Jharkhand Jaguar on Wednesday defused IEDs and wires. Combing operations are on, said SP Sinha. Largest art museum in US to showcase works of Indian sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee

The exhibition is made possible by Nita Ambani, her husband Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani and the Reliance Foundation. Born in Mumbai in 1949, Mukherjee studied painting, printmaking, and mural making at the M S University in Baroda, with the influential artist K G Subramanyan, under whose guidance Mukherjee first experimented with fiber. Phenomenal Nature will also present the latter half of Mukherjee's career in the mid-1990s, when, prompted by a residency at the European Ceramics Work Centre in the Netherlands, she began working with ceramics, eventually taking on bronze in 2003. 'Probing the divide between figuration and abstraction, Mukherjee would go on to fashion unusual, mysterious, sensual, and, at times, unsettlingly grotesque forms, commanding in their presence and scale,' the museum said. A committed sculptor who worked intuitively, never resorting to a sketch or preparatory drawing, Mukherjee in her forms explored the divide between figuration and abstraction. She was primarily inspired by nature and this was further informed by her enthusiasm for Indian historic sculpture, modern design, and local crafts and textile traditions. The exhibition will seek to highlight the radical intervention Mukherjee made by adapting crafting techniques with a modernist formalism. The artist's fiber forms are physical and organic. She never worked with a loom; instead, knotting became her primary technique and it imbued her sculptures with three-dimensional volume and a sense of monumentally, the museum said in a release. Mukherjee used natural as well as hand-dyed ropes sourced from a local market in New Delhi, where she lived and worked. The forms she fashioned are replete with sexual imagery, while some of her large anthropomorphic pieces — in which the vegetal, human, and animal coalesce — at times suggest the imagery of classical Indian sculpture. Promoter alert down DHFL

Following this, the BSE sought clarification from DHFL with reference to the news report over lookout notice against DHFL promoters. Replying to the clarification, DHL said that neither the company nor the promoters have received any communication relating to such a notice."Please note that the company and/or its promoter-directors have not received any communication from the authorities regarding issuance of any lookout notice. Apart from this, according to our knowledge, there is no other price-sensitive information under Regulation 30 of the SEBI listing regulations which could have bearing on the share price of the company,'' the company said.DHFL pointed out that it is focussed on getting a strategic partner and building a strategy for its back-to-business growth. The company also denied all allegations of existence of any alleged shell firms."We have fully co-operated with all authorities and we have not received any communication from any authorities in support of any of these allegations," it added.Earlier, investigative news portal Cobrapost had alleged that DHFL through layers of shell companies siphoned off over Rs 31,000 crore of public money through secured and unsecured loans and advances to shell companies, that were related to its own primary stakeholders through their proxies and associates. In March, the company cited a report from an independent audit firm which said that it has not promoted any of the 27 shell companies that were alleged to have siphoned off money. The independent chartered accountant firm T P Ostwal & Associates LLP said in its report that the company has not promoted any of the alleged 26 shell companies that are borrowers.DHFL was recently in the news when its stopped acceptance and renewal of fixed deposits. Reports of a lookout notice being issued against the promoters of DHFL comes after a similar notice was issued to former Jet chairman Naresh Goyal. This circular is issued against a person directing the immigration authorities to ensure that the individual does not leave the country through an airport or seaport. There have been reports of the MCA suggesting more than 20 names against whom the circular could be issued. How to get the stalled lane moving?

The simple fact that the share of agriculture is now about 13 per cent of GDP and falling, while still being the source of sustenance for almost 60 per cent of the population reveals the stark reality. A vast section of India is being left behind even as India races to become a major global economy. The realities are indeed stark. The savings/GDP ratio has been in a declining trend since 2012 and Mr Modi has so far been unable to reverse it. Consequently, the tax/GDP ratio and investment/GDP ratio have also been declining. The rate of economic growth has been suspect and all objective indicators point to it being padded up. The drivers of economic growth such as capital expenditure are dismal. Projects funded by banks have declined by over half since 2014 to less than `600 billion in 2018. Projects funded by the market have dropped to rock bottom. Subsequently, the manufacturing/GDP ratio is now at 15 per cent. Corporate profits/GDP ratio is now at a 15-year-old low at about 2.7 per cent. You cannot have adequate job creation if these are dipping. Declining rural labour wage indices testify to this. Low food prices testify to demand contraction and have added to farmers' distress. But yet Prime Minister Modi won the election hugely. In over 200 Lok Sabha constituencies, the BJP took more than 50 per cent of the votes cast. So what is happening here? In 1973, Albert O. Hirschman, the celebrated University of California Berkeley economist, published The Changing Tolerance for Income Inequality in the Course of Economic Development, and with it the 'Tunnel Effect' came to be an integral part of the sociologists' and economists' lexicon. In the paper, Hirschman argued: 'In the early stages of development, when income inequality among different classes, sectors, and regions tends to rise, society's tolerance for this inequality will be substantial. The reason people can tolerate this inequality is that they hope and expect that this disparity will fall at one day or another. However, if this disparity does not narrow, there comes a point when people will no longer endure it.' He illustrated this by using the behaviour of car drivers in a two-lane tunnel enduring a traffic jam. When one lane starts moving, the drivers in the still stalled lane feel hopeful and wait patiently. But when their lane remains stalled for a long time, they lose their patience and try to jump the lane, and soon chaos ensues. We see this happen every day in our lives in India when people are quick to jump lanes and traffic chaos results. It is very clear now that one lane has been moving and doing well in India. Indeed, so well that an Oxfam study revealed that that as much as 73 per cent of growth during the last five years accrued to just one per cent of the population. This does not mean it is just the tycoons of Mumbai and Delhi who are cornering the gains. The government now employs close to 25 million people, and these have now become a high-income enclave. The number of persons in the private and organised sector is about another 10 million. In all, this high-income enclave numbers not more than 175-200 million (using the thumb rule of five per family). Much of the consumption we tend to laud is restricted to just these people. The challenge is now to expand this high wages enclave. This is easier said than done, when we realise that over four-fifths of the labour force is in the unorganised sector, and the vast majority of these are unskilled and uneducated. Income transfer schemes will only put many of these in the consumption loop, but without addressing the problem of low productivity that blights the Indian economy. The only realistic solution is creating jobs for these millions and that can only come from labour-intensive sectors like construction of housing and rural infrastructure. For this, government capital expenditure needs to be raised dramatically. This is directly related to increasing the savings/GDP ratio. I would recommend that the PM give a special focus to critical ratios like taxation/GDP, capital expenditure/GDP, investment/GDP and income inequality. Our problem gets even more compounded by the fact that this segment of India, where most of the growth is accruing, tends to live in urban areas and in certain regions. The in-country inequality is now a matter of grave concern. We are now witnessing huge in-country migrations. Earlier the migrations were to fill in labour shortages in states like Punjab and Haryana, where disproportionate recruitments into the military and paramilitary created rural labour shortages that got filled in by migration from Bihar, West Bengal and even Bangladesh. We are now witnessing migrations from eastern UP, Bihar, Odisha and the Northeast into South India, where the population growth has dramatically slowed down and ageing is becoming an issue to contend with. This is now causing considerable disquiet, now quite palpable in the social media chatter. This time it cannot be palmed off on 'ghusbaitis'. The migration from Bangladesh has incidentally become a focus of upper caste and class Hindu ire. Thus, when we hear the RSS, BJP and their affiliates rage and rail against 'ghusbaitis', they are actually targeting Muslims. The irony now is that it is forecast that between 2025-30, the per capita income in Bangladesh might exceed India's. This is also something we need to ponder over instead of just parroting the line that we are the fastest growing 'major' economy. One of the notable programmes of Modi Sarkar 1.0 was the Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan, to popularise toilet usage by embarking on a massive rural construction programme. But there is now increasing evidence that a majority of toilets have fallen into disuse due to a lack of sewage and water shortages. This is because there is no local government worth the name in the entire country. No local government usually means no local infrastructure for water supply and sanitation. I have been an early proponent of a nationwide water supply and sanitation programme, but I have always said that without local government, and that means decentralisation, these programmes will fail. Prime Minister Modi needs to make this a priority in his second term. The job of leading India must easily be the toughest job in the world. Knowing where to start adds to the complexity. But the starkness of the issues makes this somewhat easier to discern. The focus now needs to expand to add jobs creation, reduction of income inequality to growth. One lane has been moving since 2000 when India entered the high-GDP growth trajectory. The patience of the stalled lane in the tunnel is now reaching the end of its endurance. The question is how much time does Prime Minister Narendra Modi have left to get the stalled lane moving? The writer, a policy analyst studying economic and security issues, held senior positions in government and industry. He also specialises in the Chinese economy. ... Kavitha is daughter of a fighter, Lok Sabha result not a setback: KT Rama Rao

"We won only one seat in Khammam district in the Assembly elections but got a lead in many Assembly segments in the Khammam LS seat. Likewise, the TRS was in the lead in many Assembly segments in Mahabubabad LS seat, where the party did not fare well in the Assembly polls." The Congress won all three seats with simple majorities. "The TRS got a 3.5 lakh vote majority in the Warangal LS seat. But the Opposition's combined votes in seven Assembly segments in the constituency was less than the TRS' majority in Warangal," he analysed and admitted that national factors like the Modi wave seemed to have worked among voters aged between 18 and 30. "In my Sircilla segment, I got an 89,000 vote majority in 2018, but it fell to 6,000 in the LS polls. There are no workers for the BJP and no polling agents in several booths. But the voters supported the BJP," Rama Rao said. The BJP leaders could not have even expected to win the Adilabad LS seat, he added. "We have to check whether the series of elections, right from the Assembly polls, slowed down governance and created an impact on voters in the LS polls," KTR said. 'Kavitha a fighter's daughter' Asked about the defeat of Kavitha in Nizamabad, Rama Rao said that she was not defeated due to the farmers' agitation. All the so-called farmers were political agents, he alleged. "Nomination papers of around 93 farmers were prepared at the residence of a Congress leader in Jagtial," Rama Rao said, claiming that the Congress and BJP colluded in Nizamabad. "Failure is an orphan. But success has so many fathers. We will not be discouraged by the defeat in Nizamabad and Karimnagar. Kavitha is the daughter of a fighter (KCR). She has been participating in programmes in Nizamabad, and B Vinod Kumar, who lost the election in Karimnagar, is meeting people from Karimnagar every day. 'TRS will get majority' While asserting that the TRS' vote bank was intact, Rama Rao said the party would get the lion's share in ZP chairpersons and MPP posts. 'It's not my failure' When asked about reports in a section of the media saying the TRS received a jolt in the LS polls after KTR took charge as working president of the party, Rama Rao said: "We got a majority of the seats in GHMC. But no one praised me (yevaru kireetamu pettaru?). The LS poll results are not an indication of my failure."He wondered why the media, which came down on him, failed to call Naidu an utter flop leader in Andhra Pradesh, when the TDP received a drubbing in AP polls. Relations with the BJP Asked about the party's relations with the BJP at the Centre, Rama Rao said the TRS government in the State would maintain a "government-to-government" relationship with the BJP at the Centre. "We have maintained constitutional relations with the BJP in the past. We supported GST and demonetisation, but fought with the Modi government on State issues like the delay in bifurcation of the high court. We will continue this approach. We will support the BJP on issues of national importance, but fight for our rights and funds," he said. KTR alleged the Congress was not in a state to act as a better Opposition in the Lok Sabha and there was a need for all regional parties to unite and play the role of the Opposition. "Even if regional parties like the DMK, YSRCP and others won a majority of the seats, they can't do anything now, as the BJP got sufficient numbers. Even if the TRS won all the 16 seats, our role is limited in the formation of the government in Delhi. But the regional parties should unitedly fight for their rights. Stronger regional parties will help the federal spirit to flourish," the TRS working president said. Rama Rao refused to come down on TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, but said cordial relations with YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, the CM-designate of AP, would continue. "Telangana shares a long border with AP - from Alampur to Bhadrachalam. We have to maintain good relations with neighbouring states. Now, there is a mutual trust and respect between the Chief Ministers of AP and TS," Rama Rao said. Asked if the defection of 11 Congress MLAs had an impact on the TRS in the LS polls, Rama Rao pointed out that the TRS got a majority in eight out of 11 seats. He, however, said Congress MLAs did not join the TRS technically. 'Hajipur incident being politicised' Claiming that some Opposition leaders' attempts to politicise the Hajipur incident was painful, TRS working president KT Rama Rao said that the ruling party wanted to set up a fast-track court to punish the accused in the case. He added that the party felt very sorry about the recent suicides of Intermediate students 'Kavitha is daughter of a fighter' On his sister Kavitha losing the polls in Nizamabad, KTR said: "We will not be discouraged... UK remains divided after EU polls

rexiteer and Conservative MEP for the South East Daniel Hannan - one of three Tory MEPs elected so far - agreed it was his party's "worst ever result"."We voted to leave (the EU) and we haven't left - it's that simple," he said.Labour, too, fared badly, with 10 MEPs elected but losing 8 with 15 per cent of the vote. An exultant Farage, who wants Britain to leave the EU by October 31 at any cost, declared: "Never before in British politics has a party just six weeks old won a national election. If Britain does not leave the EU on October 31st, these results will be repeated at a general election. History has been made. This is just the beginning."He claimed the results had delivered "a big, simple message - which is we've been badly let down by two parties who have broken their promises - we have topped the poll in a fairly dramatic style. The two party system now serves nothing but itself. I think they are an obstruction to the modernising of politics... and we are going to take them (the Tories and Labour) on."He also demanded a seat at the top table in any further UK government negotiations with the EU. However, a calmer analysis shows the results are much more complex. It was paradoxically a very encouraging might for two anti-Brexit parties which want the UK to remain a member of the EU - the Liberal Democratic Party and the Green Party. The UK is electing 73 MEPs from across 12 regions - 11 have so far been declared. Turnout was 37 per cent. The Lib Dems, who beat the Brexit party into second place in London, have 15 MEPs, up from 14, with 21 per cent of the vote, while the Greens have seven MEPs, up four, with 12 per cent of the vote. One of the new Lib Dem stars is Indian businessman Dinesh Dhamija, 69, who made his name by setting up an online travel company called Ebookers. The son of a diplomat, Dhamija, who might be the Lib Dem candidate at the next mayoral election in London, was educated at Mayo College, King's School, Canterbury, and Fitzwilliam College where he read law. He was elected in London.Incidentally, another Indian who impressed on the night with clear, incisive analysis was the BBC TV presenter of the election special, Reeta Chakrabarti. "It was a great night to be on, such turbulence! No I don't believe in theatrics, let the story speak for itself," she said.Farage's former party, UKIP (the United Kingdom Independence Party), lost all their 24 seats.Anti-Brexit parties - those in favour of another referendum - collectively took about 40 per cent the vote, compared with 35 per cent for the two parties (the Brexit party and UKIP) in favour of leaving the EU without a deal.Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable commented: "Our clear, honest, unambiguous message has won us our best ever European election result, and pushed Corbyn's Labour into third place. We have shown ourselves to be the strongest Remain force in UK politics."He said the results were a message for Labour to "get off the fence" over Brexit - and back Remain. His deputy, Jo Swinson, said "the results should give hope to all of the people out there who want to stop Brexit", and that they "should not be giving up without a fight"."When there is such a general shambles over Brexit, then a further referendum is the best way out of the impasse," she said.Sian Berry, co-leader of the Greens, commented: "There is clear evidence from this of strong support for the UK remaining in the European Union, but also for tackling the causes of Brexit - the massive damage done to so many communities by austerity, tax-dodging and diminution of workers' rights."Sir John Curtice, the UK's leading polling expert and professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde, told the BBC the results showed just how polarised the country had become - "it is a draw".However, Brexiteer candidates in the Tory leadership contest, such as Boris Johnson, are interpreting the results as an indication that they must pursue a hard line over the UK's withdrawal from the EU - or risk another electoral disaster at the general election.Writing in The Daily Telegraph, he said voters in the EU election had issued a "crushing rebuke" to the Conservatives. Puducherry Governor Kiran Bedi thanks PM, CM on completion of 3 years

She also thanked the team Raj Nivas, NGOs and the media. Besides, she expressed her gratitude to the people of Puducherry for their faith and willingness to engage in her endeavours, despite her not speaking their mother tongue. She said Puducherry is a communally harmonious and peaceful place and its people are generally law abiding, barring the occasional rowdy elements and collective failure to wear helmets while riding a two-wheeler. She said political class was providing authentic leadership, public officials were being accessible and sensitive and people were using available resources with care and gratitude. Confusion over functioning of bureaucracy, says L-Kiran Bedi on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that confusion was prevailing over the functioning of bureaucracy due to the Madras High Court order on the issue of administrative control in the Union Territory. Bedi has moved the apex court challenging the Madras High Court verdict which held that Puducherry LG "cannot interfere" in the day-to-day affairs of the UT's elected government. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said it will hear the plea next week. On May 10, the apex court on pleas of Centre and Bedi had sought a response from Congress MLA K Laksminarayanan, on whose plea the high court had passed the verdict. Transformational election in more ways than one

Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi, a man with no family background in politics, has claimed that record. As Manmohan Singh had done before him-a studious economist not at ease with party politics, and as humble a background. But Modi was not juxtaposed against him; he had against him someone many perceived as a sulking dynast. A number of dynasts have bitten the dust in this election, speaking of a kind of evolution of Indian polity. As for the prime minister-elect, he seems to be nudging his party towards a more inclusive, pro-poor, centrist position-a space vacated by the Congress. How that goes will be interesting to watch. This election has also seen the victory of a young man's grit in Andhra Pradesh, the triumph of a canny-yet-calm politician in Odisha, and a refusal by Tamil Nadu and Kerala to break away from their traditional template. Despite Kerala offering it an oxygen cylinder, the grand old party seems to be asphyxiating. Two of its state governments, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, are gasping for breath. The party itself is in a strange zone where it does not know its future, whether it has a future at all. BJP trying to enter hills: ally IPFT

The BJP is trying to do this at the cost of our organisation." On whether these clashes could affect the alliance, he said the tie-up was not on political grounds. "The BJP's agenda is sabka saath, sabka vikas. Our clear agenda is Twipraland. Our alliance will not be affected," he claimed.Debbarma said the IPFT voters had switched to the Congress in the parliamentary polls because its president Rahul Gandhi had said at Khumulwng on March 20 that his party would scrap the citizenship amendment bill if it was voted to power."Rahul Gandhi promised the indigenous people in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections that his party would scrap the citizenship bill if it was voted to power. We, therefore, believe many of our voters switched to the Congress owing to his promise," he said. The IPFT got a vote share of 4.16 per cent while the Congress received 25.3 per cent votes.Debbarma also claimed that it would have fared much better if not for the Congress's anti-bill movement. He, however, denied that it was a mistake to not focus on the bill. "Our main agenda is Twipraland and we campaigned in its favour. The IPFT supporters left the party and joined the Congress after getting lured by the promises of the bill being scrapped. I believe they would come back. The fate of the Congress was sealed across the country anyway," Debbarma said.He said the IPFT would field its candidates for the gram panchayat polls around August and the autonomous district council polls.BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya denied the IPFT allegation and said the senior leaders of the regional party would not agree to the reason for the BJP's increased influence. "We don't need to damage anyone's support base. People have given a clear indication of who they want in the Lok Sabha results. People decide which party they will choose," he said.In 2018, the IPFT formed an alliance with the BJP and together won 44 out of 60 seats in the Tripura Assembly and formed a coalition government, ending 25 years of Left rule. 'Southpaw shortage not a concern for India's batting', says Sachin Tendulkar

'Ideally left-right combination is something which disturbs the bowler's line and length and also the captain has to readjust his fielding,' Tendulkar, 46, said in an interview ahead of the World Cup, which starts in England on Thursday. 'But if you have good quality batters, which we do, then it really doesn't matter whether it is a left-hand right-hand combination. We have some solid batters who can deliver the punch.' With the experienced partnership of Rohit Sharma and Dhawan locked in as openers and captain Virat Kohli coming in at first drop, the 1983 and 2011 champions have a top order the rival of any in the game. But they will go into this year's World Cup with a soft underbelly having failed to settle on a number four, with KL Rahul the favourite to fill the position after his century in Tuesday's practice match against Bangladesh. Following next in the batting order will be veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose 341 ODI appearances makes him the most experienced player at this year's World Cup. India's 2011 World Cup winning captain is considered the best finisher in contemporary cricket and his inputs from behind the stumps would be as important, said Tendulkar. 'It's important that someone who's standing behind the wickets has played for such a long time and has also led India and is in the best possible position to figure out what's happening off the surface,' Tendulkar said. 'Whether the ball is stopping, bouncing, or skidding, whatever it is, he knows exactly how the ball is coming and he knows where the gaps are and how to close those gaps. His contribution and inputs are always going to be important. 'Other keepers also try and do the same thing but MS's experience is going to count a lot.' India boast of world's top-ranked ODI bowler in quick Jasprit Bumrah while wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal also feature in the top 10. Tendulkar, who remains the only cricketer to score 100 centuries across formats, played six consecutive World Cups from 1992 and holds the records for most runs and centuries in the tournament's history. He is confident India have a 'complete' bowling attack to win their third 50-over title. 'We have someone like Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) who swings the ball, (Mohammed) Shami who is skiddy off the pitch, Bumrah who is the number one bowler in the world in this format,' said Tendulkar, a member of India's 2011 World Cup triumph at home. 'We have someone like Chahal and Kuldeep who are wrist spinners. So there is variety also in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja can keep things tight. 'And we have supporting bowlers in Hardik (Pandya), Vijay Shankar and Kedar Jadhav. So all in all a well-balanced bowling attack I would say.' The World Cup returns to the 10-team format to maintain quality of the competition after featuring 14 in each of the last two editions. The decision was criticised by former players and associate nations, who are upset at being denied the chance to rub shoulders with the top sides of the world. 'Ideally if it's called the World Cup then the world should be participating. We need to find ways to engage more teams yet keep that standard of playing high,' Tendulkar said. 'It's not going to happen overnight. We need to find ways to do that. I will love to see more than 10 teams participating but also at the same time not compromise on the standard of playing. 'It's going to be a lengthy process. Lesser teams should get more exposure to get ready for big tournaments.' India suffered the ignominy of being eliminated in the opening round of the tournament in 2007 while 2019 hosts England met the same fate last time the showpiece event was held in Australia and New Zealand four years back. But this year's format — which will see all teams playing each other with the top four advancing to the semi-finals — will ensure teams have a shot at redemption, according to Tendulkar. 'This format still gives you a chance to come back. You are not out even before you wake up,' Tendulkar said. 'Sometimes it can be harsh. Since this is the World Cup, one would want to get another chance. If it's a bad day then you have time to recover and this format allows you to recover.' ... Medical student suicide: SC/ST panel records statements again, 'many may have hid casteist remarks under pressure'

On Tuesday, the commission had issued notices to Nair hospital, additional commissioner of police (Central Region) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner, following the suicide by 26-year-old postgraduate medical student Payal Tadvi over alleged caste discrimination and harassment. 'The medical college should hold meetings regularly, gather students every three months to sensitise them about ragging. But the hospital did not hold any such meeting since a year and a half,' said commission member Justice C L Thool, adding that the anti-ragging committee did not need a complaint to meet. The commission members visited Nair hospital between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm, and recorded statements of the dean, gynaecology department resident doctors, professors and roommates of Tadvi. They also visited Tadvi's hostel room, where she committed suicide on May 22. Who are Tadvi Bhil Muslims? Thool said the commission will focus on whether Tadvi faced any atrocity as per the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. 'If we find evidence, the commission can direct prosecution against the responsible officers,' he added. The commission also directed Additional Commissioner of Police Deepak Kundal to look at the case from an angle of caste-based discrimination. Tadvi had secured admission in the gynaecology department under the reserved category in TN Topiwala National Medical College, attached to Nair hospital. She allegedly faced harassment at the hands of senior resident doctors Ankita Khandelwal, Bhakti Mehare and Hema Ahuja, who have been arrested. Mumbai doctor's suicide: College confirms she was harassed over her caste, scolded hours before death Further, the commission has recorded the statements of Tadvi's family members. It is also recording the statements of many others associated to the deceased and the hospital, who have already given their statements to the police. 'Many may have hid casteist remarks (used against Tadvi) from the police under pressure,' said Thool. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has set up a five-member panel to review the anti-ragging report submitted by Nair hospital on Tuesday. The report has found evidence that the three accused resident doctors had harassed Payel. 'The report speaks of harassment by the three seniors and negligence on part of gynaecology unit head Dr YI Ching Ling,' a committee member said. MUHS Registrar Kalidas Chavan said the university's anti-ragging committee will only look into the allegations of ragging in connection to Tadvi's suicide. Offences against STs rise 30 per cent rise three years While Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan had said on Tuesday that the 21-member anti-ragging committee of Nair hospital had found evidence of casteist remarks while recording the statements of 30 people, hospital Dean Dr R N Bharmal said the college report only restricts itself to ragging allegations. MNS' Aditya Shirodkar on Wednesday met Maharashtra Medical Council (MCC) chairperson to demand cancellation of licence of the three accused doctors. The MMC, meanwhile, has asked the MUHS to share the final findings of the anti-ragging report. 'The MMC may suspend or terminate the licences if the allegations are true,' said Registrar Sanjay Deshmukh. Mumbai: Bullets aimed at friend injure 25-year-old man at Deonar; one arrested

According to police, the incident took place at 5.30 am near the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Road when Mirza had come to his parents' residence for his sehri — meal consumed before fasting during Ramzan. Mirza helps his father with his property business. When Mirza and three others were returning home on two motorcycles, they were accosted by six persons, who were in in an auto-rickshaw and a bike. They got off the vehicles and attacked Mirza and the others with him. 'One of the accused, identified as Rajan, pulled out a firearm and shot three rounds. One of the bullets hit Mirza's friend Shaikh on the knee. Shaikh was rushed to the hospital,' an officer said. Police registered an FIR on charges of attempt to murder, causing hurt, rioting in addition to sections of the Arms Act. They said the incident was related to a past dispute. 'We have arrested one person in connection with the case. It appears that Mirza had purchased a property in Khalapur through one of the accused who works as a broker. There was a dispute regarding the deal and both sides had filed complaints against each other in the past. The attack appears to be the outcome of the same dispute,' an officer said. What to wear during your periods

Make sure you don't strangle yourself in tightness. Jeans are your best friend Now, jeans might not be a popular choice during periods. But jeans that aren't skinny fitting or light coloured can come handy. Jeans that fit comfortably will make sure your pad or tampon stays in place. Try prints Stains are a woman's biggest fear during those days of the month. No matter how careful you are there are always some accidents. Try wearing prints to camouflage the occasional leaks. Mind you this is just a contingency plan. Leggings Paired with the right kurta or even a long t-shirt, leggings are almost as comfortable as track pants. If you're conscious of the bulge of pads or the stain scare, match it with a tunic or tops that go past your hips to stay safe. Skip the heels This one is a no-brainer. One could skip the heels even when they aren't on the period but stay away from the stilts during because of the pressure it causes on the lower back which is probably already hurting from cramps. Sporty and sneaky Change your style to sporty for a few days. Pick t-shirt dresses if you have to go for a night out. These will keep you comfortable and will also feel dressy on occasions. Pick joggers and match them with a nice blouse or top to trick people into thinking you're all put together. Cong workers gather outside Rahul Gandhi's residence urging him not to resign

Boxer Vijender Singh, who had fought the Lok Sabha polls from the South Delhi constituency and ended up at the third spot said workers do not want Rahul Gandhi to resign as he is an "able and hardworking" leader. "He has not resigned. We have come to talk to him. He has made an offer to resign but people do not want him to go. "He has worked hard. If the results are not in our favour, it hurts but we are fighters. Nobody else can work like him. He is a leader who takes everyone together," Singh said. Slogans of 'Rahulji, we are with you' and 'Please do not resign' rang through the air. Several workers were carrying placards with Gandhi's photos urging him not to resign. Some workers were even demanding that elections be held again in a fair manner with ballot papers instead of EVMs since the latter could have been tampered. Congress leader Jagdish Tytler said there are millions of Congress workers who do not want Gandhi to resign. "We had to be here because we do not want him to resign. There are millions of Congress workers who do not want him to resign. We are disappointed with the results but not with the leadership," he said. The crisis in the Congress showed no signs of easing with Gandhi sticking to his decision to resign as party chief after its Lok Sabha poll debacle and staying away from meeting party leaders. On Tuesday, Gandhi had only met his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, besides senior party leader K C Venugopal and the Congress's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his deputy Sachin Pilot went to meet Gandhi at his Tughlaq Lane residence on Tuesday, but they only met Priyanka. Senior Congress leaders have been pressing Gandhi to take back his decision to resign and revamp the party at all levels in these challenging times. ... When is Diwali 2018?

The main festive night usually coincides with the Hindu Lunisolar month of Kartika in the Bikram Sambat calendar. According to the 'Gregorian calendar', however, Diwali night comes between mid-October and mid-November. Days before Diwali, people clean their houses and workplaces and on the day of the festival they decorate their homes with lights and candles. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped on that day as the devotees offer prayers to the goddess of wealth for materialistic abundance and prosperity. Later, fireworks are performed followed by offering sweets and exchange of gifts among families, friends and relatives. The celebrations begin with Dhanteras, followed by 'Narak Chaturdasi' on the second day, Deepawali on Day 3, 'Diwali Padwa', which is dedicated to matrimony, on the fourth day and it all ends with 'Bhai Dooj', dedicated to the sister-brother bond on the fifth day. On Diwali night, Jains celebrate the attainment of salvation by Lord Mahavira, while 'Bandi Chhor Diwas' is celebrated among Sikhs to mark the release of Guru Hargobind Singh from a Mughal emperor. A majority of Buddhists celebrate Diwali by worshiping Laxmi. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Mamata to protest civic 'capture'

Chatterjee wasn't present at the time. "This is nothing but unethical capture of the civic body. They locked up my office, vandalised the building," said Chatterjee, who later rushed to Calcutta to meet municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim. Chatterjee claimed he had not been able to go back home since the Lok Sabha results on May 23. The municipality falls under the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat, which the BJP snatched from Trinamul this time. The BJP also won the Bhatpara bypoll in the vicinity.Ganesh Das, former chairman-in-council and the first to defect to the BJP, denied Trinamul's allegations. "They (those who stormed the office) are Chatterjee's men who wanted to delete some documents from a laptop in the chairman's office but could not succeed. They managed to takeaway the hard disc of the CCTV cameras to destroy proof of his illegal activities."A complaint has been lodged against the invasion and an inquiry is on, said an officer of Naihati police station. Not just in Naihati, the BJP has also managed to swing neighbouring civic bodies in Bhatpara, Halisahar and Kanchrapara. "All these places have been the backyard of former Trinamul Number Two Mukul Roy. He has been active in engineering these defections," said a Trinamul source. On Tuesday, three MLAs, 60 councillors and some panchayat functionaries joined the BJP. Roy has promised more defections. On Wednesday, Bidhannagar mayor and Trinamul MLA Sabyasachi Dutta took a swipe at party colleague and minister Sujit Bose for not being able to ensure a lead from his area, Bidhannagar, in the Lok Sabha polls. "Those who could not ensure leads are getting rewarded," said Dutta, referring to a ministerial shuffle on Tuesday. Bose was made minister of state in charge of the forest department in addition to his responsibilities as fire services minister. Rahi Sarnobat pockets Olympic quota with gold as Saurabh Chaudhary impresses

China are second with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. Asian Games champion Rahi clinched her career's second World Cup gold, which helped India win its sixth quota place in shooting for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the women's final, another Indian in the fray, Manu Bhaker had a better start than Rahi, having five out of five hits in the first of 10 series of five shots each. Rahi started with three hits. After the sixth series, Manu, Rahi and Olena Kostevych of Ukraine were jointly tied at the top with a score of 21. Manu had an unfortunate double weapon malfunction in the seventh series and that was followed by shock elimination in the fifth place. Rahi, however, kept getting stronger, scoring perfect 5s in the 8th and 9th series to finish with 37 points. Olena bagged silver with 36 and Bulgarian Antoaneta Boneva won the second available quota place by winning the bronze with a score of 26. Earlier, Saurabh had set the ball rolling for India as he not only won the yellow metal but also shattered both senior and junior world records with a score of 246.3. Incidentally, he held both the existing records. Saurabh's previous senior world record shot at Delhi was 245 and the junior world record was at 245.5. Silver medallist Russian Artem Chernousov though had lesser scores in the 9s in the 24-shot final than the Indian. Saurabh beat him by close to three points in the eventual standings. He finished with a superb 246.3 to Artem's 243.8. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Poor diet linked to cancer, says study

The findings are comparable to the number of cancer cases linked to alcohol consumption, which amount to between 4 and 6%. Excessive body weight is linked to 7% to 8% of cases and lack of physical activity is associated with 2% to 3%. 'Our findings underscore the opportunity to reduce cancer burden and disparities in the United States by improving food intake,' said study author Fang Zhang and cancer and nutrition researcher. Of all types of cancers, colorectal cancer had the highest link to poor diet. Roughly 38%, or 52,000 cases, of colorectal cancer diagnosed in 2015 were related to consumption of poor. That compared to around 14,400 cancer cases of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx, 3,165 cases of uterine cancer, and 3,060 cases of post-menopausal breast cancer. The study authors, who proposed putting government-sponsored warning labels on red meats and other cancer-linked foods, said our results call for nutrition policies to address cancer burden. MG Motor's Hector, 'India's first internet car', poised to take the fight to rivals Harrier, Compass

MG's Halol plant currently has a production capacity of 80,000 units per annum. MG Motor India will begin shipments of the Hector SUV within the next few weeks to its widespread network of 120 outlets across 50 cities. The carmaker aims to expand its network to 250 outlets by the end of September this year. With pre-booking and the launch of the car expected to take place within the next few months, the new SUV is set to take on rivals like the Tata Harrier and the Jeep Compass. On the engine side, the three SUVs are powered by the same Fiat sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The power and torque output of Hector and Compass are same, at about 171 PS and 350 Nm, while that Harrier has been reduced to 140 PS and 350 Nm. The fuel efficiency of the diesel variant of the three vehicles hovers at around 17 km per litre. The petrol-powered models, meanwhile, are offered in two variants in the Hector, one of which comes with a 48V battery-powered hybrid system. The power output remains the same for both variants with the 1.5 liter petrol engine (143 PS), but the torque in the hybrid unit is 20 Nm more than that of the non-hybrid version. The Compass petrol model comes with a 1.4 liter engine that produces 160 PS and 243 Nm. Tata does not offer a petrol variant for the Harrier. The MG Hector is bigger than its rivals and also offers the largest boot space. The Tata Harrier stands second in terms of the wheelbase and length, while the Jeep Compass is the smallest. Features-wise all three come loaded, boasting six airbags in their top variants. As for the price, the Tata Harrier starts at Rs 12.7 lakh and goes up to Rs 16.25 lakh, the Jeep Compass ranges from Rs 15.60 lakh to Rs 23.11 lakh and the MG Hector is expected be priced between Rs 16 lakh to `21 lakh. Nitish calls on Shah, eye on rail portfolio

itish's favourite for the railway portfolio, according to party insiders, is said to be Rajiv Ranjan alias Lallan Singh, who has been elected from the Munger Lok Sabha seat. The other name for the cabinet being discussed is that of R.C.P. Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP and close confidant of Nitish. The others in the running are Santosh Kumar, a Kushwaha leader, and Ramnath Thakur, son of former chief minister Karpoori Thakur, who hails from the electorally important extremely backward caste.BJP insiders, however, said that Modi and Shah may not give two cabinet portfolios to the JDU. "They (the JDU) may get one cabinet and two junior ministers. After all, the BJP also needs to take care of its members from Bihar," said a BJP leader from the state.Ram Vilas Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party, which has won six seats in the polls, is also eyeing a key cabinet berth. The LJP's parliamentary board had on Tuesday decided that Paswan would represent the party in the government while his son, Chirag, would be the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha.Paswan was the food and consumer affairs minister in the outgoing government. This time he is said to be lobbying for a more "meaningful" berth in the cabinet. Paswan, too, has been a railway minister in the past. Given the enormity of the Modi-led BJP's mandate, it's unlikely the allies can push beyond a point in securing berths of their choice. BJP to offer Rajya Sabha seat to R Roshan Baig?

If these proposals which has to be approved by the party central leadership, come through then Mr Baig may say goodbye to the Congress. However, Mr Baig has been consistently maintaining that he is a loyal soldier of the Congress party and has no plans to quit the party. Even while criticizing other Congress leaders, he had showered praise on AICC president Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, responding to reports of dissidence and Mr Baig turning rebel, Congress Legislature party leader, Siddarmaiah termed the coalition government as a "rock solid government" which none can topple. He said after the CLP meeting, "Where is the dissident activity in our party? 72 of the 79 MLAs have attended and four had informed me about their absence. Ramalinga Reddy is on a foreign tour, ministers, Satish Jarkiholi, Rajashekhar Patil (Humnabad) and Subba Reddy are busy with the local body elections in their constituencies. So they have not attended the meeting." In response to a question, Mr Siddarmaiah conceded that Mr Roshan Baig and dissident Gokak MLA Mr Ramesh Jarkiholi have neither attended the meeting nor informed him. "Yes, they have not turned up," he said. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. New auto giant? Fiat Chrysler wants to merge with Renault

enault welcomed what it called a "friendly" offer. The company's board met Monday at its headquarters outside Paris and said afterward that Renault will study the proposal "with interest".In a statement, Renault said such a fusion could "improve Renault's industrial footprint and be a generator of additional value for the Alliance" with Japan's Nissan and Mitsubishi.Fiat Chrysler's offer comes at a key moment for Renault. The French manufacturer had wanted to merge fully with Nissan, but those plans were derailed by the arrest of boss Carlos Ghosn on financial misconduct charges in Japan. Now, questions are growing over the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, which together make more passenger cars than any one company. While Fiat Chrysler says the merger with Renault would accommodate the alliance and lead to savings for them, it is unclear how the Japanese companies might react in the longer term to being tied to a much larger partner.Automakers have collaborated more in recent years as they come under pressure to invest heavily in developing electric cars, self-driving vehicles and in-car connectivity. Regulators, particularly in Europe and China, are pushing automakers to produce electric vehicles and meet tougher climate change regulations, pressure that only grew after scandals over the amount of pollutants emitted by gas and diesel-powered engines. A deal would save 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion) a year for the merged companies by sharing research, purchasing costs and other activities, Fiat Chrysler said. It promised the deal would involve no plant closures, but it didn't address potential job cuts. The companies are largely complementary: Fiat Chrysler is stronger in the US and SUV markets, while Renault is stronger in Europe and in developing electric vehicles. Analysts say both companies are weak in China, which is now the world's largest auto market.Together, they would be worth almost 37 billion euros ($40 billion). Fiat Chrysler, which includes the holding company of the founding Agnelli family with a 29 per cent stake, proposed that its shareholders get a 2.5 billion euro ($2.8 billion) special dividend because of Fiat Chrysler's higher market value."This operation will bring benefits to both countries," Fiat Chrysler chairman John Elkann told reporters in Italy, noting that it had been 10 years since Fiat's takeover of bankrupt Chrysler, in exchange for small-car technology and management know-how.The car market has shifted dramatically in the meantime, with Fiat Chrysler abandoning small cars in the United States in favour of SUVs.Analysts at financial firm Jefferies said it was "hard to disagree with the logic" of the deal, as there is a strong fit in the markets each company covers and the brands they offer."The elephant in the room is who will run the entity," analysts Philippe Houchois and Himanshu Agarwal wrote in a note to investors.Mergers of equals can be difficult to manage over questions of who gets the top leadership positions and which brands are promoted and invested in most. A tie-up between Daimler and Chrysler in the 1990s was billed as a merger of equals, but it eventually collapsed amid cultural differences and recriminations. Investors were nevertheless enthusiastic about Fiat Chrysler's plan, pushing the company's shares up 8 per cent and Renault's 12 per cent. The French government, which owns 15 per cent of Renault, said it is "favourable" to the idea of a merger but wants to study the conditions more carefully, especially in terms of "Renault's industrial development" and employees' working conditions, government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye said. "We need giants to be built in Europe."Ghosn's legal problems in Japan have left Renault vulnerable . Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer, head of the CAR automotive research center at the Duisburg-Essen University, said Ghosn's plans to merge Renault with Nissan-Mitsubishi had "little appeal" for the Japanese. He noted that Renault's sales represented just 36 per cent of 2018 alliance sales - and the Japanese didn't want to see the French carmaker drive a merger with those numbers.A Renault merger with Fiat Chrysler, however, could strengthen both companies' positions and put pressure on smaller companies like Ford in Europe. The merger idea is the biggest corporate move so far by Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley, who took his position after the unexpected death last year of the charismatic leader Sergio Marchionne. What happens to jobs is likely to be a source of concern.France's influential CGT union warned against cuts and said it wants the French government to retain a blocking stake in any new company."We know that when there is talk of a merger... at the end, it's the employees who are paying the high price for it - loss of jobs, having to compete with others around," said Fabien Gache of the CGT.Matteo Salvini, the leader of Italy's right-wing populist League party and the deputy premier, said that "if Fiat grows, it is good news for Italy and Italians," though he warned a deal should protect "every single job".In Tokyo, Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa wouldn't comment directly on the merger idea but said, "I am always open to exchanging constructive views on strengthening the alliance."The merger will be complicated because the combined company would involve operations in the US and multiple European countries and Renault's "eroding alliance" with two Japanese carmakers, said Karl Brauer, the executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader."It's a powerful combination in theory," he said, "but aiming for a single, aligned automotive entity, with everyone rowing in the same direction, might not be realistic." Forum Against Citizenship Act Amendment Bill vows to block bill

The unprecedented unemployment, price rise, demonetisation, GST and the situation of farmers and traders have not affected the results. False and emotional propaganda on social and other media misled the people and they will have to suffer the consequences. The BJP is hell-bent on reducing the Constitution to a scrap of paper. There are reports of the ruling party ignoring all rules and regulations and using official machinery for the elections."The BJP won nine of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam.Gohain said, "The BJP is firm on providing citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis. The party's Hindutva ideology has not been diluted and a Hindu Rashtra is their objective. We appeal to Assamese Muslims to join our movement in opposing the bill. The country's economy is in a bad shape. The rich are becoming richer. The BJP has provided Rs 23 lakh crore as tax rebate to corporate houses and got funds for elections from them." Forum member and writer Hare Krishna Deka said, "The issue of the bill is still pertinent. It is another matter that the Balakot strike proved to be a deciding factor for the BJP's win. The incident still rankles as 2,500 jawans were made to move by road, providing an easy target for terrorists and 40 jawans were martyred. Security of all people should be guaranteed. The minority are apprehensive."Ulfa pro-talks on NRCUlfa (pro-talks) general secretary Anup Chetia on Tuesday claimed that an "anti-Assam circle" was trying to obstruct NRC update and, hence, remove Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi from the case. India Inc revenue growth in Q4 hits six-quarter low of 10.7 pc

He added both urban and rural segments witnessed a decline in consumer sentiment as reported by auto and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies. The commentary on rural growth from auto OEMs and FMCG companies too indicates a slowdown in growth which can be attributed to a muted rabi harvest, the note said. The interest coverage ratio adjusted for sectors with low debt levels like IT, FMCG and pharmaceuticals witnessed a decline to 3.8 times from 4.7 times in the year-ago period, it said, attributing it to lower growth in operating profits. It can be noted that some companies are yet to report their Q4 numbers. The official data on GDP growth will be coming out towards the end of May. ... World Cup 2019: Eoin Morgan embraces pressure of being favourites

'We have spoken about it as a group, the level of expectation and the favourites tag is there for a reason,' he said on the eve of the tournament opener. 'Over the last two years, particularly at home, we have been outstanding and that is the reason it is there. 'In past World Cups I have played in and some of the others have played in, we have gone with little expectation and not done that well. I would pick this position instead.' England brushed aside Pakistan 4-0 earlier this month and, although they lost their warm-up match with Australia, saw off Afghanistan in their final contest on Monday. Morgan declared his squad was ready for action after injury concerns for Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson. 'There is a lot of belief within the dressing room. We are confident with our own game. The first game of any World Cup or Ashes feels different and that is natural. 'Dealing with it is a challenge in itself but one we are looking forward to. A win (against South Africa) under any circumstances will do.' England will hope to emulate their female counterparts after they won the 2017 Women's World Cup on home soil. The men's football team also gripped the nation with their run to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals last summer and manager Gareth Southgate passed on his words of advice earlier this month. The two teams' journeys are remarkably similar and Morgan believes his side can also inspire the country. 'We did the session with Gareth and it was brilliant,' he added. 'Every one of our players enjoyed it. He got up and talked about his journey with the team, especially in the build-up and how they increased expectations. 'Everyone who has been in our team recognised that they were in the same place we were four years ago. Hopefully we can match what they did.' To do that, a fast start is essential but South Africa - ranked third in the world - will pose a major threat at The Oval, even without fast bowler Dale Steyn who is missing with a shoulder injury. But it is the conditions which worry Morgan most, with cloud expected for much of the morning. 'In every World Cup, something stands out. And in this one, it could be that every team is three or four down early on because of the overhead conditions,' he added. He said, 'We are prepared for that and it is something we will overcome. They are a well-rounded team, they are coming into a tournament with confidence. They have coped without Dale Steyn often for about a year and a half. They have cover. The last time they were here, Dale wasn't and they were fine.' DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio: Brothers in arms

Rick could be another Clint Eastwood; Cliff should have been another Steve McQueen. On Wednesday afternoon, I sat down for a brief chat with Pitt and DiCaprio in a suite at the Carlton Hotel, one of the grand hotels overlooking the Mediterranean. The two were in the midst of a massive publicity operation that day, giving interview after interview. Presenting a movie at Cannes can be big business and the army of Sony Pictures employees handling this offensive had the air of people worried about fumbling the most delicate of rarities.Their famous charges, by contrast, seemed wholly relaxed. Each man was affable, direct and seemed happy to talk, but, then, they have been in the business a long time. They know how to do this. Here are excerpts from the conversation.Did Tarantino show you movies to prepare for your roles?Brad Pitt: [to Leonardo DiCaprio] More you than me.Leonardo DiCaprio: We had a screening of a multitude of B-films that I had never heard of, a lot of 1960s television with actors like Ralph Meeker and Ty Hardin. These guys could have been McQueen-esque, but didn't make the transition from black and white television, especially Westerns, to career-makers like The Great Escape. So it was almost like a love story to them. Did they get that one opportunity? No, that may have passed them by. So let's start talking about your character, what he might have been, what he's struggling with as a working-class guy in the industry who has been playing the heavy from television show to television show. What that does to his psyche and his confidence?Pitt: I [remember] a lot of that television. In fact [Tarantino] reminded me of much of it that I had forgotten. We did watch Billy Jack, some Tom Laughlin, just for fun. We were pretty much weaned on the same television and film. We talked a lot about the stuntman-actor relationship. I got to meet Bud Ekins, who was Steve McQueen's. This was a legendary relationship. He did the jump for The Great Escape, got Steve McQueen into motorcycles. And, then, Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham. We got to talk to Burt. Originally he was going to play George Spahn. We had rehearsals before he passed. I was surprised what a joy that was and how giving he was, and I was really moved by it. But then I realised that so much of my childhood was watching Burt Reynolds - he was the biggest thing around in the late 1970s.Did you two hang out so you could develop your flow together?DiCaprio: You come to Hollywood and you're basically isolated and left to your own devices. [Rick and Cliff] rely on this friendship for everything. We immediately fell into those shoes. We understood that relationship [laughs] so quickly that on the first day, we were those guys.Pitt: It was pretty automatic. We both came on the scene around the same time, we have crossed paths many times, we have the same reference points. I've always felt that you don't understand the deal you're making when suddenly you're that lone gazelle on the plain and the herd's gone, so to speak. And, you know, my friend here [he gestures toward DiCaprio] has been the same. So there's automatic comfort in having experienced the same thing in that way. That's not a complaint in any way, I say that merely as fact. We have mutual respect and I know when an actor elevates a scene, so we carry that respect.Obviously Tarantino's movies are very written and his voice is very strong. Does it take awhile to shake his voice out and fill in yours?DiCaprio: And hear your own, is that what you're saying? [Laughs] I suppose so. He is such an absolute powerhouse of a personality, of course, and an artiste as well. But, look, he gives you real ownership. [There are] beats that you need to hit. But there are plenty of opportunities where once you get into the groove, there can be a completely improvisational scene. And you're almost making reference points from his dialogue and his voice and the multitude of talks that you've had with him about who this character is and what kind of movie he wants to make. They sort of bloom sometimes, and that's happened quite a few times.Pitt: You know when you have an altercation in public or you put your foot in your mouth, and you're driving home and you think of that witty thing that you wished you would have said? His dialogue is that witty thing.Rick Dalton is kind of like the Clint Eastwood who doesn't happen.DiCaprio: He is the guy who almost got that shot - and that's what's torturing my character. I grew up in this industry, I have a lot of friends who are actors, and there's so much talent out there. But it really boils down to being at the right place at the right time.Pitt: We talk about this with streaming. With streaming, we see so much talent that was always there. There are so many more opportunities. We're seeing this wealth of actors, writers and directors. And it just reminds us how lucky we were to land where we landed.DiCaprio: Mm-hmm.I worry that so much seems disposable.Pitt: It may be. I've been really interested in younger generations that cannot just sit in a chair for the length of a movie. They want their information quicker. That may just be the changing of the times. I don't know.DiCaprio: I see positives in the fact that things and ideas and story lines that normally studios might not take a chance on, through these new streaming services, will see the light of day. So cream may rise to the top. What were people saying about the transition from silent films to talkies and the advent of television? There were all these changes, but great art is going to be spoken about and, hopefully, we don't get so inundated that we become confused.I found Once Upon a Time surprisingly moving.Pitt: Absolutely, you can see it in the script, you can feel it.DiCaprio: The only thing I'll say is that I know what the Manson murders sort of represented, being a native of Los Angeles and having parents who are still hippies to this day.Real hippies?Pitt: I met his dad on set and said, "How nice, he's going to be an extra in the film." And he goes "No, that's him every day."DiCaprio: They talked about this loss of innocence, this real turning point where they had these ideals about what the future could be. And then all of a sudden this one longhaired guy - and how he manipulated these kids to do what they did - it changed the world forever.Pitt: I walk away [from the film] with a hopeful reminder of what it can be, what we can be.What was the hopeful part?Pitt: Taking care of each other, that's what I feel at the end. It really endears me to Quentin. I could be projecting, but I see a kid who was home by himself a lot and found his...DiCaprio: Solace...Pitt: Solace... and direction in these heroes on the screen, big and small. I find that in his dialogue. I find that in the scenarios. I find this one really endearing. He's exposing his own self-doubts. [DiCaprio starts mm-hmming] I just see this real innocent kid who wishes life could be this way. Maybe it's because I know Quentin I find it hopeful and endearing. I was really, really moved at the end.I find it's interesting that he's gone back to the past again.Pitt: He's going back to his childhood.DiCaprio: Yeah, I agree. What Brad said is very pertinent because cinema and television and all this stuff, it's in [Tarantino's] DNA. He puts things in historical context but he also creates a fairy tale. This whole idea of him recreating history - like what he did in Inglourious Basterds with Hitler -much like Scorsese, too, where in their childhood, cinema became part of their DNA and their language and their ability to converse with others -Pitt: their spiritual grounding -DiCaprio: Yeah, it's embedded in who they are as human beings. You rarely find people like that. Like Brad was saying, this is his homage and his reminiscence of 1969 where everything changed culturally and cinematically. It's incredibly imaginative.
