Telangana Cop booked for 'torture' of teen maid

Later, the minor was let off and the matter came to the notice of a local NGO, that wrote to the Women Development and Child Welfare officials seeking intervention. The head office directed the DCPU to rescue the child. The minor was rescued on Tuesday and sent to the Nimboliadda home for children. According to the DCPU, the minor stated that she took up the job due to her father's ill health. She informed that she had worked at the home of the officer for three months for `7,000 per month. However, when she wanted to go back home, she was coerced into accepting a crime she had not committed, the DCPU officials said. Meanwhile, Raidurgam police said that they had followed protocol. "We received a complaint on Sunday and registered a case. The minor came to the police station and confessed to the crime. She said the stolen money was with her friend. The money was later found in his possession," said SHO S Ravinder. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Bigg Boss 13 day 25 written update episode 25 October 25: Shehnaaz Gill apologises to Shefali Bagga, but she could not care less

'Aggression is natural but you are in control of the aggression. Remember you are competitors, not enemies,' Bigg Boss said. Deepti Naval loves to go trekking with her camera, says 'its a great excuse to be out in the wilderness' Shehnaaz Gill apologised to Shefali Bagga for her behaviour the previous day and began crying but Shefali did not react at all. Soon, Devoleena said even as she had tears in her eyes, 'Bigg Boss aapko ye gandh promote karna hai karo but don't ever compare me with this dirt.' She got upset after Paras told her that Bigg Boss said that everyone inside the house was crossing limit in displaying aggression. Sidharth Shukla was also seen telling Rashami Desai that they have been together for some time and they must avoid making problems. While they told each other that things are okay, both said nothing could be changed once in the company of others. After the discussion with Bigg Boss, Paras went to Asim and tried to sort out differences offering a handshake but Asim was in no mood to bridge the gap. Later, when Shefali said she did not want to share bed with Arti, the latter began crying. Shefali and Mahira then discussed Shehnaaz and said that they must take some step if she is not chided in the weekend episodes. 'Desi Girl' sits down for a chat on new film, anniversary plans and stardom

go home, my lunch is ready as soon as I leave the airport. Woh garam hone lagta hai! I come home and I have ghar ka khaana. I can't cook, so all my Indian food comes in dabbas... actually whenever my aunts are around I always get fresh Indian food. But after coming back, I get the kind of ghar ka food that I like... my kind of bhindi, my kind of dal, my kind of chicken. I like that!So right now are you gorging on Indian food throwing caution to the wind? No, no. I am having makhanas (laughs)! In my 20s, I could do it. But the moment you hit your 30s, girl, the body changes. You can't have parathas like that. How was the vibe on The Sky Is Pink sets like?It was a lot of fun. We are putting out a BTS video soon, you'll see. It was fun because all of us get along really well and we were on the same page about the film that we were making. But also, it was a lot of emotions... so it got deep. We spent a lot of time understanding each other and supporting each other though the difficult subject matter that it was. But we are friends for life now - Zaira, me, Rohit, Shonali, Farhan, Ronnie (Screwvala), Sid (Siddharth Roy Kapur), Nilesh (Maniyar, writer) - everyone who has worked on the film. This film bonded us in a way that is very special. How has the working equation with Farhan changed since Don (2006), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and now The Sky Is Pink?Well, the beauty of it is that it's such a full circle. Farhan produced me with Don when I was such a young, nascent actor and now I'm producing him, you know? He tells me he's really proud of me because he's seen me like grow, literally, from when I was some 22, to now. It makes me feel like that's quite an achievement, it feels good. Prakash Jha's Jai Gangaajal released in 2016. How does it feel to have a Hindi film release after three years?I'm really happy. The problem is, it's not that I didn't do a Hindi film out of choice. I was shooting Quantico that took up 11 months of my time, it was a 24-episode TV show with me in every scene, you know? I didn't have the time to do a film. I just had one month in a year. That's why I did films like Isn't It Romantic? (2019) and A Kid Like Jake (2018) which had smaller parts... 20 days and I could get it out. As soon as Quantico was done I was looking for features to do, especially one in Hindi because I hadn't done one for a while and this one was just perfect for me. The Sky is Pink deals with love and loss... it's a heavy subject. Did you break down while shooting certain scenes? It feels like a heavy subject but it's treated in a very light-hearted way because that's how Aditi (Priyanka), Niren (Farhan) and Aisha (Zaira) are. Their family is like that, they believe that - if you don't have a long life, you should have a big life. That's what their belief is, that it should be full of adventures, full of laughter. So whatever little time you have on Earth, you're spending it feeling really happy. That's such a lesson for all of us. We forget about enjoying every single day because we are so caught up with everyday life. This film really inspired me to be present. It made me call up my mom after watching the film. I said, 'Listen I don't appreciate you enough. I love you so much. Thank you.' It's that kind of a movie and it's so special. After Shonali gave you the brief, did you meet Aditi Chaudhary to prepare for the character?Shonali didn't want me to meet Aditi but I elbowed my way and flew there. You know I don't like listening to people (laughs). I elbowed my way and insisted on meeting Aditi. I'm not a mother, I needed to understand from both Aditi and Shonali who have both lost their children... where does that takes you? What do you feel in your heart? Those were difficult questions and difficult conversations. I really wanted to get into the head of both of them and understand. Aditi treated the situation very differently than Niren did. Aditi was ferociously protective, she wanted to give her daughter the biggest life - whatever my daughter wants, she will get it. My mother was like that, my mother was fully about, 'Whatever life you want to make for yourself, we will be there.' And I really related to Aisha, to when I was a teenager. Is there any particular anecdote from the set that you want to share? It was a scene where Aisha, my daughter, decided to not get a lung transplant that'll prolong her life. She decides that she wants to be confined to her bed and that she'd rather take a chance with the treatment than get a transplant. Even I was for Aditi's character, because the quality of life is something Aditi and Niren always focused on for their children. But yet, knowing that she won't live 10 years, she might just go in the next couple of months... that scene when Aisha tells me that she can't do surgery. When I was doing it and even after I finished it, I kept crying. I hugged Shonali and kept saying, 'I'm so sorry you had to go through this. I'm so sorry this happened to you'. I empathised so much with what must have happened and what she must have gone through. That really got me.How much of that stress on set do you carry back home? I don't take stress with my work. My movies don't stress me, they give me joy. I am an artiste and I believe in blowing life into the characters that were written by amazing writers, in this case, Shonali and Nilesh. But it never stresses me out, I did take back the feeling of (pauses)... the lesson that I learnt from this film was very cathartic to me. It taught me that it's better and so much healthier to celebrate the life lived rather than mourning the loss of the person. We spend so much time being sad and the person that we lost, who loved us, they wouldn't have wanted that right? They'd want us to be jovial. My dad wouldn't even let me come to the hospital, he'd want me to go to the set because he wouldn't want to see me looking at him. It's like celebrating his life and who he was and talking about him, keeping his memories alive. That is why Aditi and Niren wanted to make this movie, they wanted to keep Aisha's memory alive, in the most joyous way. And I think that's the lesson we should learn, being in the present, celebrating the life of the person who we have lost and telling the people you love while they're alive, how much you love them. They say that women subconsciously end up looking for traits of their dads in their life partners. Do you think you see certain traits of your dad in Nick (Jonas)? I feel like Nick is my father, in so many ways. My dad was a musician, his first love was music and so is Nick's. My dad was a very stable, solid, emotional man and so is Nick. He was calm, he never got agitated and he was emotionally very sound. So is Nick. I do feel that subconsciously I did end up marrying someone who's a full chhavi of my dad. Has marrying Nick changed your life and who you are as a person? Oh, yeah. It has made me nicer (laughs)! Or calmer, let's say. It has made me realise that stress is not the most important thing, there's no point of stressing about something. Nick is a solution finder. I always was but I always used to get crazy when I found solutions. He is like a calming factor, the stability of him makes me not be as crazy as I usually am. Your first marriage anniversary is coming up in December. Any plans yet?(Smiles) It's apparently a surprise! I asked my husband and he said, 'Why do you have to know everything?' So, I said, 'Okay!'. Hopefully it'll be special and we will be surrounded by our loved ones. Let's see!Can you give us a glimpse of what's a typical day in the Jonas household like?We behave like a joint family but we really are not (laughs). We all have our separate homes. But when Nick and I are at home and we both are not working, which probably happens six times a year maybe... it doesn't happen very often because we both have crazy professional lives. During that time, we like to sleep in without an alarm, we like to go grab lunch, take my dog for a walk, watch a movie in a theatre... simple things that we don't get to do otherwise. You are producing as well as acting in a wedding comedy with Mindy Kaling. How is that project shaping up?Universal just came on a couple of months ago. So now the process of writing is starting with Dan Goor and Mindy. Dan wrote Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Mindy wrote The Office... so that sensibility is amazing. They are both writing the script at the moment, so that's going to take time till the script gets approved. I don't think it'll happen before next year. What is it like to wake up as Priyanka Chopra? Do you sometimes feel the pressure knowing how huge your stardom is?(Laughs out loud) I don't see it! You realise that I have been a public person for more than half of my life, since I was 17? I was a teenager when I started doing this. So this is my normal. I'd be worried if I woke up and it wasn't there. You're also doing The White Tiger with Rajkummar Rao for Netflix...I'm actually doing two films with Netflix this year. One is with Robert Rodriguez who made Sin City, Spy Kids... so he directed this kids' superhero movie for Netflix which is super cute. It's called We Can Be Heroes and has Pedro Pascal, Christian Slater, me... a bunch of actors that have come together. I just finished shooting that, now I'll do promos for The Sky Is Pink and then I'll get into White Tiger which is for Netflix. It was one of my favourite books and Ramin Bahrani is an Iranian filmmaker who has made 99 Homes and some really beautiful films. So I'm really excited about working with him as well. You're very expressive on your social media and seem to wear your heart on your sleeves. Is that your own space for expression without caring about what people say? I don't care. I mean, if you've known me at all, then you know that I'm not someone who cares about people's opinions. I care about people's opinions when it comes to my work because that's the only thing that matters to me. But as a person, I'm a human being and I keep that bifurcation very clear. As much as I put myself out there as a public person for people to have an opinion on, the opinion doesn't matter. Unless, it's for my work. Do you ever read those Instagram or Twitter comments? Tweets, yes sometimes. If I'm free or vella sometimes, I do read those Instagram comments. You are already a successful producer. Do we see you directing a film someday? I think any actor would want. That's the ultimate creative expression. I guess filmmaking is a director's medium, not an actor's medium... unlike what we think in India. We give actors way too much credit but the stars of the movies are the filmmakers. We just act in whatever is written by someone else. I think that it is something that I'd want to do at some point. I just don't have the courage to do it yet.Lastly, are you playing Maa Anand Sheela in Barry Levinson's film?I'd want to, yes I am. Right now we are just developing it, we are just starting the writing process because we got a deal in place just recently. Again, that's going to be a next year thing. Pehle likh toh le yaar, likhi nahi hai abtak... (laughs). DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Place in team follows peace of mind for Umesh Yadav

A regular part of the Indian dressing room till last year, Umesh went out of favour after a mediocre show during India's tour of Australia. He was dropped from the side after the Perth Test, which the visitors lost. Given his habit of spraying the ball around, he also lost his place in the limited-over squad. A T20I against Australia in Visakhapatnam in February was his last international match before his return in the Freedom Trophy series. During his time on the sidelines, Umesh kept polishing his bowling skills with former India pacer Subroto Banerjee."We work on his line and length. A few adjustments were made and the results are there to see," said Banerjee, who has been guiding Umesh for years at Vidarbha Cricket Academy. "He's a gifted athlete. He's also physically fit. That helps in implementing adjustments with ease and in minimal time. Cricket is a mental game and you need to be mentally strong to survive for a long period. It was all about making him think positive." Former Vidarbha player and India junior selector Pritam Gandhe also had regular conversations with Umesh while he was out of the team. "Cricket is all about your mindset. He needs to work on his mindset as a lot of cricket can some times take a toll on your body and mind. Once that was sorted, he was ready for the team." Umesh himself had credited Banerjee for his help after his three-wicket haul against West Indies A in a warm-up game in August. "He was very positive and that's what you want. There are times when everything is going good." "But your mind is distracted, thinking that things are not going the way you want them to go. To get away and think, that space of mind is important. I did the same. I went home, spoke to my coach, cleared my thoughts and got clarity." Virat Kohli too touched upon the preparations Umesh had put in on the psychological front. "One thing he has constantly worked on is his mindset," the India skipper said after winning the third Test. Umesh might be back for now, but a fight for his place awaits once Bumrah returns. But given the mental space he is in, he might find it easier this time. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Kareena Kapoor Khan on being Taimur's mother: 'Each day is a learning'

'When it comes to being a mother, my experiences are very personal and it's my own. Because there is no crown for following it (parenting methods). Of course, there are like thousands of books (on parenting) which you can read. I read all of them but I got really bored. So, I said I am just going to figure it out, each day. And each day is a learning…,' she expressed. The Veere Di Wedding actress spoke about how becoming a parent has impacted her approach towards life. She said, 'I don't look at life through my eyes. I only look at life through my son's eyes…Earlier, when he was like seven or eight months, I would be like, 'No no, I am going to be really chilled out and very relaxed,' but it is like I can't. I am obsessed. I just can't…I can't help it. But I am sure all mothers are,' while talking to film critic Rajeev Masand for a daily. Talking about whether she wants Taimur to grow up to be an actor, she said, 'I would want him to do exactly what he wants in life. He has understood that we go out to work and that is called shooting. He has been to the sets so he kind of understands that zone. But I don't think as of now he is really interested.' And she is right. Instead of choosing a career on the child's behalf and pushing him or her towards it, parents need to focus more on identifying kids' true potential, talk to them about the various career paths, and guide and encourage them to follow their passion. I get written off every day: John Abraham

'When I started my career, a lot of people had said that I am too hairy and that I look too small; I look like a small boy, but that has become my advantage. These things do happen, but one should just keep working hard and prove their worth. Sometimes, when you work hard, people appreciate it and sometimes they don't. But you should just keep on working harder. We all are work in progress,' says the Ram Lakhan actor. Directed by Anees Bazmee, the movie also stars Arshad Warsi, Saurabh Shukla, Pulkit Samrat, Ileana D'Cruz, Kriti Kharbanda, and Urvashi Rautela. At a time when the landscape of Bollywood comedies are often flooded with sex-comedies, Pagalpanti is a deliberate attempt by Anees to re-introduce clean comedies. 'I don't write double-meaning dialogues in my films. At the same time, I don't have issues with those who use them in their films. I feel if you have a brain, a flair for writing, and willingness to work harder, then you do not need such shortcuts. I do keep in my mind what kids would like to watch and what they would not,' says the director. ... City bus service claims 1 crore ridership in a year

Official data also shows that the passenger count rose threefold between March and September of this year. From a cumulative ridership of 26,23,746 passengers in March, the number rose to 51,902,945 in June, climbing further to touch 1,01,36,512 on September 28. 'It took us only 14 weeks to jump from 50 lakh passengers in June 2019 to reach this impressive figure of one crore,' GMCBL public communication officer Vanita Akhaury said. The uptick coincides with the introduction of new, better performing routes and several online and offline outreach programmes, which, officials said, played a big role in boosting ridership. 'We have amped up efforts on social media platforms, set up outreach booths at important locations and conducted awareness drives (about routes) with various RWAs,' Akhaury added. During this period, the bus service also added at least 20 new vehicles to its fleet, in addition to starting at least eight new routes and revising two older routes that were performing poorly. Interestingly, some of the service's better performing routes—IFFCO Chowk-Manesar (Route 134 B), Gurugram bus stand-Dundahera (Route 215 B) and Huda City Centre to Bhondsi (Route 111 B)—were all launched after March 2019. 'The routes were launched after studying past performance and paying attention to commuter feedback, which is why they (the routes) are performing better,' Akhaury said. Experts agreed that the trend is a positive one, and that the service's route rationalisation seems to have paid off. 'The numbers indicate an average passenger count of about 50,000 people per day. This is on par with other fledgling bus services in cities such as Bhubaneshwar and Indore. Hopefully, the Gurugaman passenger numbers will encourage the government to invest more in the city bus service,' city-based transportation expert Sarika Panda Bhatt said. Bhatt, however, added that there is no way for experts to independently corroborate this data. 'What we have are just selective numbers. To truly gauge Gurugaman's performance, the data needs to be provided in open, raw format like the DMRC does, so that the authenticity of the numbers can be investigated,' she said. Despite this improved performance, the GMCBL is still lagging behind on its declared objectives, which were to launch 200 CNG-operated, low-floor buses by March 2019, with the addition of another 300 in the following year. Officials had also committed to launching 25 routes by March 2020, but only 13 routes have been launched so far. GMCBL officials refused to comment, saying they were not authorised to discuss future plans. I saw poverty as a child. Now, I want to fight it

This, however, became a reality when I turned 38. In my 40s, I took up #LivingMyPromise, committing myself to donating half my wealth to a charitable cause while I am alive or in my will. My tryst with the social sector, however, began when I was 30. I started volunteering with a non-profit in Gurgaon (now, Gurugram) as a weekend pursuit. About six months into it, I started to find more meaning in it than my day job, and was asked to chair that non-profit. At the time, I was heading the Mobile Business, Japan and Asia-Pacific, Google, and was being encouraged to consider roles based in the United States or Japan. But I had no such aspirations. I quit Google, moved to Bangalore, and joined InMobi. In 2015, I quit InMobi and started a non-profit: The/Nudge Foundation. My aim was to work on the alleviation of poverty. After spending a considerable amount of time interacting with people living in slums, I identified unemployment and underemployment as big social challenges. The/Nudge Foundation provides skills training courses to the poor, unemployed youth, with another aim to nudge and nurture top talent to solve India's most important problems. GiveIndia happened to me by sheer chance. Venkat Krishnan, the founder of GiveIndia, and I were together at an event in Seattle in early 2017, and I discussed my desire to raise large-scale capital for non-profit and social work through a tech platform. On realising that our vision and goals aligned quite well, I decided to come on board as 'Founder 2.0', board member and CEO. Our model of bridging the gap between donors and verified non-profits, and creating a community of every day giving brought me one step closer to my ultimate goal of poverty alleviation. In early 2019, Venkat asked me if I would take up #LivingMyPromise, and I didn't think twice to say yes. Coming to this decision and following through with it wouldn't have been a reality without the support of my family. My wife has been a strong source of support through it all, despite our family being a single-income one. My daughter is invested in the social sector herself. As a family, we are a work-in-progress towards our design of living within our basic needs and serving our society. Here one can see brightly coloured sails of yachts lined up on the calm waters of the lake. Holiday makers thronging the Mall, await their turn for boat rides. Needless to say boating is one of the favourite activities in Nainital, along with trekking in the densely forested mountains that surround the town. Mythology counts this hill station, named after the pear-shaped Naini Lake, among the 64 Shakti Peeths - religious sites where body parts of Hindu Goddess Parvati are believed to have fallen in her incarnation as Sati. It is said that Naini Lake was the spot where Sati's eyes ('Nain' in Sanskrit) fell as her husband Lord Shiva carried her dismembered corpse around the earth. History attributes the discovery of Nainital to P. Barron, a British sugar trader from Shahjahananpur, in 1839. He was so taken with the lake and its lovely forested surroundings that he soon returned with a sailing boat and decided to build a house naming it 'Pilgrim's Cottage'. The cottage, which is almost 180 years old, is still in existence. The process of settlement begun by Barron led to the building of colonial villas, cottages being added to what was a secluded mountain resort. View this post on Instagram #MonsoonInUttarakhand Nathuakhan, you can enjoy the nature walk or meditate in beautiful gardens. The serenity of the surroundings is blessed with picturesque forests, lush green valleys, and hilly terrains. #Uttarakhand #UttarakhandTourism #SimplyHeaven A post shared by Uttarakhand Tourism (@uttarakhand_tourismofficial) on Aug 27, 2019 at 11:04pm PDT Erected in 1844, the Church of 'St. John in the Wilderness' is one of Nainital's earliest buildings and is possibly the finest church in any Indian hill station. The church was named by the Bishop of Calcutta, who was visiting the town then. The town was very much a wilderness then. As more and more buildings came up, it became a lively summer retreat for British soldiers and officials. It soon became an important administrative town and was declared the summer capital of what was then known as United Provinces. In the later years, Nainital became the summer residence of the Governor of the United Provinces. The older parts of Nainital continue to retain historical memories - colonial vestiges that include sprawling bungalows, public schools, churches and the Christian cemetery. Disaster hit the town in 1880, when a landslide killed a large number of people and destroyed all the buildings including the temple of the town's patron deity, Nanda Devi. While the Church of 'St. John in the Wilderness' contains a brass memorial to the victims of these landslide, who were buried in its graveyard, on the area, where the Nanda Devi temple earlier stood, a large area known as 'The Flats' was created for a new temple. The new Nanda Devi Temple was built on the site as planned and continues to draw pilgrims on festivals. To prevent further disasters, storm water drains were constructed and strict building laws were ordered. Located in the vicinity of several other lesser known hill stations, Nainital has the advantage of being connected with motorable roads all through the year. Surrounded with forests of oak, pine and deodar, it offers peaceful wooded lanes for those who prefer to walk as well as plenty of choices for trekking and serious mountaineering. The latter half of the 19th century saw the founding of a number of European schools in Nainital. By 1906, there were over a dozen of these schools that were solely meant for British children. There were separate schools for boys and girls. The Diocesan Boys School and Girls School were under the guidance of the Church of England and was renamed as Sherwood College. Another school, Philander Smith's College (for boys) was governed by an American and is now Birla Vidya Mandir. St Joseph's College remains a Roman Catholic institution, while the Wellesley School is an American institution. The first signs of change came early in the 20th century, when Indians also began arriving in Nainital, which had so far remained an exclusive English preserve. While Indian officers and professionals began arriving as part of the annual migration of the state government of United Provinces to Nainital every summer, the big change came when British civil servants started receiving subsidies for their annual holidays in England. This was when their summer visits to hill stations came to a halt, leaving the area to Indians. (This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Streaming Guide: Vishal Bhardwaj movies

Vishal Bhardwaj treated the kids in his story as real characters and not a device to introduce cute moments. Shabana Azmi aced her role of a witch and Shweta Basu Prasad was brilliant as a pair of twin sisters - the cute one with a lisp, Munni, and the hell-raising bully, Chunni. She grabbed the National Award for Best Child Artist for the film. One of the characters was called Mughal-E-Azam and by the end, the film commented on the widespread superstition and blind faith in witchcraft in Indian villages. After watching Makdee, you might find yourself randomly singing, 'O papad waale, panga na le'. Streaming on: Hotstar Cast: Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Pankaj Kapur, Om Puri, Naseerudin Shah, Piyush Mishra Maqbool hit the big screen on January 30, 2004. Based on Macbeth, the first of Bhardwaj's acclaimed films, it featured Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri as greedy cops. Tabu's Nimmi as the lonely mistress of don Abbaji (Pankaj Kapur) who seduces Maqbool (Irrfan Khan) into a web of murder, lust for power and greed, came as a revelation to the cine lovers. Irrfan Khan, as usual, displayed his expertise with his craft of acting. The film is counted among the best films of the Indian cinema. Streaming on: Netflix Cast: Pankaj Kapur, Shreya Sharma The Blue Umbrella starring Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma was based on Ruskin Bond's novel of the same name. The film was awarded the National Film Award for Best Children's Film in 2007. The critics lauded the film for the simplicity of its plot, music by Bhardwaj and Pankaj Kapur's impeccable performance as Nandu, the shopkeeper. It is touted as a family entertainer which you can enjoy during your family time on a lazy weekend. Streaming on: YouTube, ZEE5 Cast: Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu Another book-to-screen adaptation, Omkara found its narrative in William Shakespeare's Othello, a tale of friendship, jealousy and betrayal. Apart from an engaging story, the film boasts of some spectacular performances by Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgn, Konkona Sensharma and Vivek Oberoi. Bipasha Basu's dance on 'Beedi' became one of the highlights of the film and music by Bharadwaj played a character in the movie. You can't miss this one from Vishal Bharadwaj's filmography. Streaming Guide Gulzar Anurag Kashyap Hrithik Roshan Priyanka Chopra Imtiaz Ali Streaming on: Netflix Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor Kaminey is a story of a rivalry between twin brothers, played by Shahid Kapoor, who suffer from a distinctive speech impediment. One of them lisps and other stutters. Priyanka Chopra essays the role of Sweety, a Maharashtrian girl, who is the love interest of one of the twins. The music of Kaminey became a rage and for the longest time after the film's release, people attempted to replace 's' with an 'f' in their speech. Streaming on: Netflix Cast: Priyanka Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan After The Blue Umbrella, Vishal Bhardwaj adapted another Ruskin Bond story. His 2011 release was based on Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands' in which a woman's string of spouses die suspiciously. Indian Express' film critic Shubhra Gupta, in her review of 7 Khoon Maaf, wrote, 'Saat Khoon Maaf lives up to its premise for most of the film, before it pulls up short, well ahead of a satisfactory conclusion.' Streaming on: Netflix Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon Not just one, there are several reasons to watch this film from Vishal Bhardwaj's brand of cinema. From its lead actors, Tabu and Shahid Kapoor to its screenplay and direction, everything proved Haider as one of the finest films of Bhardwaj. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Haider was set in Kashmir of 1995. It was a story of a young boy Haider who returns from his university in Aligarh to look for his disappeared father Dr Hilaal Meer (Narendra Jha) after being accused of harbouring a militant. The film grabbed five National Awards, Best Screenplay, Best Music Direction, Best Male Playback Singer, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. Streaming on: Netflix Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor Rangoon, set in the pre-independence era, has a love triangle between its lead characters, played by Kangana Ranaut, Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor, at the centre of its narrative. According to the critics, one of the two good things about the film was Kangana's performance as Julia, which held stark resemblance to 1930s stunt actor Nadia. The other was Vishal Bhardwaj's attention to detail in creating the 1940s India on the 70mm screen. Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video Cast: Sanya Malhotra, Sunil Grover, Radhika Madan, Vijay Raaz Adapted from Charan Singh Pathik's short story Do Behenein, Pataakha is the story of two sisters, Chutki (Sanya Malhotra) and Badki (Radhika Madan) who are always at war with each other. Both of them run away from their homes to marry men of their choice but destiny brings them together yet again. It turns out that the men they had married are brothers. Bhardwaj's mastery of sticking to the theme and setting of his film throughout comes through the pitch-perfect dialogues. In her review, film critic Shubhra Gupta had written, 'Vishal Bhardwaj's Pataakha, based on Charan Singh Pathik's short story Do Behnein, has managed to pull off a rousing parable. Bharadwaj, who has also written the film, doesn't waste a second in centre-staging the two sisters Badki Champa (Madan) and Chutki Genda (Malhotra) and their animosity. This is a wonderful ensemble cast.' DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. US cleared to slap $7.5 billion in tariffs on EU over Airbus case

tock markets around the world, which were already down on concerns for the world economy, added to their losses on the news. The US had prepared for Wednesday's ruling and already drawn up lists of the dozens of goods it would put tariffs on. They include EU cheeses, olives, and whiskey, as well as planes, helicopters and aircraft parts in the case _ though the decision is likely to require fine-tuning of that list if the Trump administration agrees to go for the tariffs. The tariffs can take effect no earlier than mid-October because a key WTO panel needs to formally sign off on them first. But they will likely have an impact on agricultural and other sectors of the European economy, at a time when other tariff battles have dented global trade growth.Wednesday's award follows a WTO ruling in May 2018 that the EU had illegally helped Airbus with subsidies. However, it does not end the long-running trans-Atlantic dispute over aircraft: WTO arbitrators are expected to rule next year about how much the EU can impose in tariffs following a separate decision that went against Boeing. The EU's top trade official said the bloc would prefer to reach a settlement with the United States to avoid a tariff war _ but it will respond if US President Donald Trump imposes new duties on EU products.EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said a tariff war "would only inflict damage on businesses and citizens on both sides of the Atlantic, and harm global trade and the broader aviation industry at a sensitive time.""If the US decides to impose WTO authorized countermeasures, it will be pushing the EU into a situation where we will have no other option than to do the same," she said.Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who was meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Rome on Wednesday, vowed to "defend our businesses." Italian wine and cheeses could face an impact from US tariffs. The award is the largest among about two dozen at the WTO since it was created nearly 25 years ago.Unlike Trump's unilateral tariffs on billions of dollars-worth of steel, aluminum and other goods from China, the EU and elsewhere, the retaliatory tariffs authorized in the Airbus case have the stamp of approval from the WTO, an organization that he has repeatedly criticized.German Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged "we have lost a matter under WTO law.""This means it's not some sort of arbitrary question but a verdict according to international law that now weighs on Airbus, one must sadly say," she told reporters in Berlin. "We have to see how the Americans will react now."The WTO in May 2018 found that EU "launch aid" for Airbus had resulted in lost sales for Boeing in the twin-aisle and very-large-aircraft markets. The ruling centered on Airbus' 350XWB _ a rival of Boeing's 787 _ and the double-decker A380, which tops the Boeing 747 as the world's largest commercial passenger plane. The case itself dates to 2004, a testament to the plodding and thorough rhythm of the Geneva-based trade body.Rod Hunter, a partner at the law firm Baker McKenzie and a former White House economic official, saw three possible outcomes: The EU can end the offending subsidies to Airbus, decide to absorb the tariffs or try to reach a negotiated settlement with the Trump administration.Given Trump's enthusiasm for tariffs, Hunter said, it's unclear what the president and his trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, really want: "Does he want to set up a negotiation to get a resolution or is it just tariffs for tariffs' sake?''The $7.5 billion represents a fraction of EU exports to the United States, which last year came to $688 billion. But the specter of more tariffs comes at a sensitive time. Trump's aggressive use of tariffs _ especially against China _ has shaken financial markets, hobbled global trade and hurt manufacturers paralyzed with uncertainty about where to buy supplies, locate factories and sell their products. On Tuesday, a private index of US manufacturing output dropped to the lowest level since the recession year 2009."The market effect could be larger than just the impact on the European exports and their US customers,'' Hunter said.Gary Hufbauer, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a former US trade official, cast doubt on prospects for a EU-US trade deal that will ease tensions and ward off tit-for-tat tariffs, at least before the 2020 US presidential election. "Election years are bad for trade deals,'' Hufbauer said. The WTO is already examining a dozen cases involving US tariffs and countermeasures brought by its trading partners over the administration's steel and aluminum tariffs. Trump has insisted the move is needed to protect US national security interests, but the Europeans claim it is simply protectionism and breaks global trade rules. The EU has introduced "rebalancing" tariffs on about 2.8 billion euros ($3 billion) of US steel, agricultural and other products. Trump has also threatened to slap duties on European automakers. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Kartarpur milestone

Against this background, the Kartarpur Corridor agreement is the only positive development. It came to fruition because both sides showed the good sense to delink it from the rest of the relationship. Of course, in so doing, both were driven by their own self-interests. With so many important Sikh shrines on its side, Pakistan believes it can forge a special relationship with the Sikh community and has done so pro-actively. India, on the other hand, cannot afford to be seen as lagging behind on this, given Punjab's complex post-Partition political history. The agreement is a boon to the Sikh community in India, who now have the opportunity, starting with the 550th birth year of Guru Nanak, to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, directly through a road from Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab to the shrine. It heals one of the wounds of Partition for the Sikh community. Much has been made over the US$20 fee that Pakistan will levy per pilgrim. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh went to the extent of calling this a jazia tax, invoking spectres of the medieval oppression of Sikhs by Mughals. This is playing to the gallery. The Indian claim that such charges are not in keeping with the religious-cultural ethos of the country is not even accurate. Big Indian temples charge worshippers for 'special darshans' or 'quick darshans', and pilgrims pay these fees without complaint. China levies charges on pilgrims visiting Lake Mansarovar and India has never objected, even when the fee was hiked a few years ago. Sensibly, India has dropped the demand that Pakistan not levy this charge. The amount is protected by the agreement, and any hike will have to be re-negotiated by the two governments. In some ways, the Kartarpur agreement is comparable to the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, which was negotiated and signed by the two countries despite the bad blood over Kashmir, though the World Bank played mediator. That, too, was a standalone agreement of its time, and has withstood the repeated shocks it has been subjected to by the bilateral ups and downs. Hopefully, the Kartarpur Agreement will remain as enduring as the IWT. It may be unrealistic to hope at this moment that this agreement will pave the way for a wider constructive engagement between the two countries, but what it shows is that the two sides are not entirely without the capability to do this. Bengaluru hotelier under scanner for gold, forex smuggling

According to sources, the DRI had "intercepted and detained Chandrashekhar and his associate Vattalore John Wilson in September 2017 at the Kempegowda International Airport under COFEPOSA and seized 20.12 kg of gold worth Rs 6.24 crore from their possession. While investigating, they unearthed that Chandrashekhar had smuggled Rs 50 crore worth of forex to Dubai between January and September 2017," said the officer. The DRI is in the process of filing a prosecution complaint before the Special Economic Offences Court against Chandrashekhar and his other associates. "The DRI, with the help of their counterpart agencies in Dubai, came to know that Chandrashekhar had smuggled foreign currency worth over Rs 50 crore out of India and had also huge quantity of gold into India with the active connivance of Customs officer D Ashok who was posted at KIA," he added. Ashok was compulsorily retired in June this year by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs on corruption charges. "Investigation so far has revealed that Chandrashekhar was a frequent traveller to Dubai. He had declared foreign currency of over Rs 50 crore on arrival there before remitting it in his bank account," said an official source. He explained that under the Dubai laws, a foreigner has to declare foreign currency at the port of entry before being allowed to remit it in a bank. "Chandrashekhar has laundered money, which is an offence under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in India and is investigated by the Enforcement Directorate. The DRI has learnt that he has allegedly used this money to buy gold, which he has smuggled into India over a period of time," said the officer . "The DRI has shared the information with the ED and Income Tax Department. Based on the tip-off, the I-T Department has conducted search and seizure operations on properties linked to Chandrashekhar and reportedly found Rs 250 crore worth of undisclosed properties," said the officer. Saif is now married to actor Kareena Kapoor Khan, with whom he has one son, Taimur. Sara, who made her film debut in 2018 with Kedarnath, has often spoken fondly of her brother. She had told Hindustan Times in an interview, 'I think Ibrahim definitely does want to be an actor. We talk about films and I do know that being an actor is what he dreams of. But I have also often told him that having a dream and living it are two different things. There is a lot of hard work because it's not just glitz and glamour and I think he is aware of that. Dimbeswar Baruah's plea to honour educationists

fter a meaningful career in schools spread across several districts, Baruah joined the Sivasagar Govt Multipurpose HS School as principal in 1983, from where he retired in 1989. A dedicated teacher and administrator, it was during his tenure as principal that the school produced many HS toppers in the science and arts streams. His contribution to society did not end with retirement. He also joined the Srimanta Sankardev Society and embarked on social and religious work. He has also received several awards.Baruah was moved on getting the news about the award but could not attend the award event due to health issues. His son Moni Baruah accepted the award on his behalf."I am honoured to receive the award. By instituting the awards, The Telegraph has paved the way for other big business houses to follow in the footsteps and launch such initiatives. This is a great gesture towards educators. Such recognition to people who work for society throughout their lives will surely inspire others to dedicate their lives to education. The awards and scholarships to students will provide support and inspiration at a stage when they need it the most," Baruah said from Sivasagar.SBI assistant general manager (personal relations) Dijen Borah, who gave away the award to the lifetime achievers, said, "It was an honour for me to give away the awards to teachers who give so much to us but receive so little in return. This is a brilliant initiative by The Telegraph to honour both students and teachers on the same platform. I was especially moved by the courage awards to differently-abled children".Lifetime achievement awards were also presented to eminent educationists Anil Kumar Som and Nitya Sarma.Som transformed Kamakhya Vidyalaya, one of the most sought-after government schools in the city, by his vision and dedication. East Bengal unwilling to play on Thursday

It was very difficult to get police permission for Thursday. We had to make a series of requests to various quarters. "Everything is ready now, and if we postpone the match at the eleventh hour, that would be unfair. "So the match is on. If any of the teams don't turn up, a decision will be taken based on the referee's report," Joydeep said. The fate of the league championship depends on this game. If East Bengal don't turn up and play, then according to IFA rules, three points will be awarded to Calcutta Customs. And if East Bengal play, they have to win the match by at least a seven-goal margin to bag the title. Peerless SC would be crowned champions otherwise. Peerless SC are at the pole position of the table with 23 points from 11 matches. But the formal announcement regarding Peerless being champions will be made after the league-sub committee meeting, which is likely to be held after the Durga Puja.East Bengal have requested the IFA to schedule the match after October 21, as some of their players and coach Alejandro Menendez Garcia are leaving the city on Thursday evening.Joydeep said: "Yes we have received a letter from East Bengal, but that was after we had sent them the schedule. Had they sent the letter earlier, then the thing might have been different."I have also received a letter from Calcutta Customs. They said it would be difficult for them to play if we schedule the match after the Pujas. "We had already decided in a meeting, which was attended by all CFL Premier Division A clubs, that the league would be completed before the Pujas." TV actress Sanjeeda teams up with singer-composer for music video in Istanbul

I was very happy that he approached me. He told me he would feature in it too. And then when he said we are shooting this video in Istanbul, I was like, 'Dude there's no looking back now."Have you acted in a music video before?I have but not on this scale. They were all shot here or in Goa..How was it shooting in Turkey? It was my first time in Istanbul and we tried to explore the best locations. If you're going out of the country, the director keeps in mind that you need to explore the best locations apart from the actors looking good. The whole packaging and styling of Jigar and me is so cool and stylish. Plus the Istanbul factor has added everything to the song. It was beautiful. First, we didn't have to worry about the heat, so we were not sweating (laughs). It was cold and chilly and amazing for the song's mood. We shot for two days. What's the best part about this song according to you?I think what really works well in the video is the fact that Jigar and I are ourselves in the video. Music videos are hardly two to three minutes' duration and in that time you have to tell a whole story. So, it has to be very sweet and simple and we kept it like that - a girl and a boy meet, break up and meet again. What's been the response you've been getting?I was shooting in London for my film and I didn't even get the chance to send the video to everyone. Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg promotes free speech; no questions from press

'It's quite ironic,' said Sally Hubbard, director of the enforcement strategy at the Open Markets Institute and a former state prosecutor. More generally, she said of Facebook, 'The key to free expression is to not have one company control the flow of speech to more than 2 billion people, using algorithms that amplify disinformation in order to maximize profits.' Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other companies are trying to oversee internet content while also avoiding infringing on First Amendment rights. The pendulum has swung recently toward restricting hateful speech that could spawn violence. The shift follows mass shootings in which the suspects have posted racist screeds online or otherwise expressed hateful views or streamed images of attacks. Facebook also has come under criticism for not doing enough to filter out phony political ads. 'Right now, we're doing a very good job at getting everyone mad at us,' Zuckerberg told the packed hall at Georgetown. He said serious threats to expression are coming from places such as China, where social media platforms used by protesters are censored, and from court decisions restricting the location of internet users' data in certain countries. 'I'm here today because I believe that we must continue to stand for free expression,' he said. People of varied political beliefs are trying to define expansive speech as dangerous because it could bring results they don't accept, Zuckerberg said. 'I personally believe this is more dangerous to democracy in the long term than almost any speech.' Taking note of mounting criticism of the market dominance of Facebook and other tech giants, Zuckerberg acknowledged the companies' centralized power but said it's also 'decentralized by putting it directly into people's hands. … Giving people a voice and broader inclusion go hand in hand.' John Stanton, a former fellow at Georgetown who heads a group called the 'Save Journalism Project,' called the CEO's appearance 'a joke.' Zuckerberg 'is the antithesis of free expression,' Stanton said in a statement. 'He's thrown free speech, public education and democracy to the wayside in his thirst for power and profit.' The social media giant, with nearly 2.5 billion users around the globe, is under heavy scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators following a series of data privacy scandals, including lapses in opening the personal data of millions of users to Trump's 2016 campaign. Facebook and other social media platforms have drawn accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that their platforms are steeped in anti-conservative bias. Zuckerberg recently fell into a tiff with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a leading Democratic presidential candidate, who ran a fake political ad on Facebook taking aim at the CEO. Warren has proposed breaking up big tech companies. With the phony ad, she was protesting Facebook's policy of not fact-checking politicians' speech or ads in the same way it enlists outside parties to fact-check news stories and other posts. 'We think people should be able to see for themselves,' Zuckerberg responded Thursday on the fact-checking issue. 'If content is newsworthy, we don't take it down even if it goes against our standards.' The social media network also rebuffed requests that it remove a misleading video ad from Trump's re-election campaign targeting Democrat Joe Biden. A spokesman for Biden said Zuckerberg's speech was an effort 'to cloak Facebook's policy in a feigned concern for free expression.' 'Facebook has chosen to sell Americans' personal data to politicians looking to target them with disproven lies and conspiracy theories, crowding out the voices of working Americans,' campaign spokesman Bill Russo said in a statement. Several of the students' questions to Zuckerberg at Georgetown pointed up the conflict. One asked, if Facebook supports free speech, 'why is conservative content disproportionately censored?' But another asserted that the policy of not fact-checking political ads is pro-conservative. 'I think it would be hard to be biased against both sides,' Zuckerberg replied, smiling. Asked about the handling of questions, Facebook spokeswoman Ruchika Budhjara said, 'They were submitted by students as they walked into the room. And they're being picked at random by Georgetown.' Liverpool strike late, but winning run ends in 1-1 draw at Manchester United

The two most successful sides in English football could not have come into the game in more contrasting form. However, United answered Solskjaer's calls to rise to the occasion. Liverpool were without Mohamed Salah through injury and the Egyptian's pace and trickery was badly missed. The visitors were able to welcome back goalkeeper Alisson Becker for the first time in two months after a calf injury, but the Brazilian was rarely tested as United were happy to sit back and counter-attack. Solskjaer changed his formation to a 3-5-2 in an attempt to limit Liverpool's flying full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson and it was largely effective as the hosts restricted the league leaders to precious few chances. Liverpool's best opening before the break came when Sadio Mane finally found some space to counter-attack, but from his cut-back Roberto Firmino fired too close to David de Gea. United had not scored in their two previous matches prior to the international break, but finally produced a moment of quality going forward to take the lead, even if fortune was also on their side for the goal to stand. Victor Lindelof looked to have upended Divock Origi on halfway, but no foul was given by Martin Atkinson and as United broke forward, Daniel James's cross perfectly picked out Rashford to prod past Alisson. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was furious on the touchline even before a VAR review failed to overturn the decision. The visitors' frustration only grew moments later when Mane outmuscled Lindelof to turn in what he thought was an equaliser, only for VAR to this time rule the goal out for a handball by the Senegalese. Klopp sprinted down the touchline at the half-time whistle, but was unable to change the pattern of the game after the interval as Liverpool continued to dominate possession without creating many chances. Indeed United could have doubled their advantage when Rashford and Fred fired shots just wide of Alisson's goal on the counter-attack. Lallana had played just 10 minutes in the Premier League this season prior to coming off the bench 20 minutes from time. But he was in the right place at the right time to make a telling contribution in the title race as he tapped home at the back post from Andy Robertson's cross. United were than camped inside their own box for five minutes of stoppage time. Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain was inches away from a winner as his driven shot flew just wide and United had another VAR review go their way deep into added time when Fred was adjudged to have played the ball with his shoulder rather than an arm inside the area. kca/dj MANCHESTER UNITED DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. The significance of the vote | HT editorial

This has happened due to a combination of national factors (Mr Modi's appeal; the discourse on nationalism; and the effectiveness of the central government's welfare schemes) and state-level factors (the perception of integrity of both CMs and sharper delivery of services). But it has also happened because of the collapse of the Opposition in both states. In Haryana, the Congress has been embroiled in an internal battle, and the leading regional formation, led by Om Prakash Chautala, has fragmented. In Maharashtra, too, the Congress' ability to put up a strong fight is near absent even though the Nationalist Congress Party, suffering from debilitating desertions, is battling it out more vigorously. But if the elections will give a sense of the dynamic in both the ruling and Opposition parties, it is also significant because of the social churn it will reflect. The BJP has constructed a coalition of non-dominant castes in both states (non-Jat in Haryana, non-Maratha in Maharashtra). In both, it is now seeking to make inroads into these traditionally dominant castes. Will it succeed? If it does, the BJP will indeed end up becoming a truly inclusive Hindu party across caste groups in both states. At the same time, a worrying trend in Indian politics — of the diminishing representation of Muslims — looks set to continue. This has social implications because access to power to diverse groups has kept up their faith in democratic procedures and helped maintain inter-community harmony. But as citizens vote today, it is once again a reminder that India's electoral democracy is robust, enabling people to exercise their fundamental right in choosing who governs them. Trade talks between India and US are on the right track, says Piyush Goyal

Goyal told the forum that his ministry is also working to bring down the cost of logistics that have to be borne by manufacturing companies in India. Goyal's comments came a day after Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the US that she would prepare a blueprint for global companies looking beyond China to make India as their preferred destination to invest. 'I will make a blueprint with which I will approach them and put forward to them as to why India is a far more preferable destination and make every attempt to invite them to India,' she said. Goyal referred to the trade talks between India and the US and added that things are on the right track. He added that India is looking to the US for technology, innovation, skills, and quality education. India, on the other hand, offers an attractive market for US businesses and skilled labour that can add value to American companies, he said. Goyal told a business conference that he was hoping to meet US trade representative Robert Lighthizer soon. Goyal said that by now, India and the US would have announced the package, but for the preoccupation of his counterpart Robert Lighthizer first with US-Japan trade negotiations and later with discussions with the Chinese side. 'Therefore, probably, the finalisation of the trade package got a little delayed. But we have almost resolved the broad contours of what we are going to announce. I don't see any great difficulty in closing the gaps on the first announcement,' he added. However, speaking on the sidelines of the event, Goyal hinted that India may not rush to sign the RCEP trade pact, saying that it will ensure that its national interest in all sectors are protected before it does so. On RCEP, negotiations for which started in 2012 among the 10 member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and its six FTA partners, Goyal seems to suggest that unless all demands of India are met, it will not sign the deal, negotiations for which are nearing an end. 'Dates are for astrologers to decide. Every interest of the domestic industry and people of India has to be protected before we execute any free-trade agreement. India will ensure that on services, on investments, in every aspect our national interest is protected first before any agreement is entered into,' Goyal said. Speaking at another session of the forum, in a conversation with Tim Roemer, former US ambassador to India, petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that India is the 'hotspot in energy investment destination' in the world. 'I invite all energy players to bring their technology and investment here and become a part of India's growth story,' he said. Pradhan said that the country has moved to an open, transparent, process-driven policy atmosphere, and all are welcome to invest. The investing companies must bring technology, capital and good business models to India, he added. 'Energy is increasingly an important component of our bilateral trade. Our crude oil import from the USA was almost nil in 2014. The total import of petroleum products from the USA including LNG (liquefied natural gas) in 2018-19 stood at over $7 billion, and is likely to go up further this year,' Pradhan said. According to USISPF estimates, the India-US bilateral trade is projected to grow to $238 billion by 2025. Sectors like defence trade, commercial aircraft, oil and liquefied natural gas, coal, machinery, and electronics are areas of potential growth in the US investments and commerce in India. Indian industry has an opportunity to promote automotive, pharmaceuticals, seafood, IT and travel services to the US market. (Mint's Asit Ranjan Mishra and Reuters contributed to this story.) From trickle-down to bottom-up, India needs to rethink its economics |OpinionFrom trickle-down to bottom-up, India needs to rethink its economics |Opinion

The truth is that India's problems are much deeper, and are not visible through the measurement of its GDP. India's citizens have been let down by a flawed economic model which both political dispensations have adopted. Its premise is that growth at the top will pull the bottom up. It has not. India's economic policymakers should consider the other way: The growth of human development at the bottom will push up growth at the top. It is worth noting that China reached the levels of human development (health and education), which India is still striving to, 30 years ago when China's economy was much smaller than India's is now. Human development provided the foundation for China's remarkable growth. The principal cause for the slump in India's growth is the slackening of consumer demand, even for basic things like packaged foods. Delhi's Aam Aadmi Party government has directed its efforts to improving the citizens' ease of living by providing them basic necessities like education, health care, electricity, and water at little or no cost. It computes that savings per family are ~4,000 per month. The increase in disposable incomes has resulted in additional consumer-buying power, estimated at ~24,000 crore per annum in Delhi. Employers in India complain about the poor quality of India's abundant human resources, a fundamental cause of which is poor education in government schools. The Delhi government's mission to improve education in government schools, which serves the masses, has produced impressive outcomes. Thus, its citizen-centric policies are improving the economic fundamentals for investors by increasing consumer demand and building human capabilities too. Delhi has the lowest power tariff among all Indian cities. The state government has also been expanding access to cheap power with special concessions to the poorest consumers. The consumer base of the distribution companies has expanded by over 20%. Despite constant reductions of tariffs for five years, the financial performance of the three (all private) distribution companies has improved, and they have been upgraded to stable by rating agencies. It is a win-win for citizens and businesses. Debates about the economy cannot reveal the fundamentals when ideas mooted are promptly dismissed with ideological labels, such as capitalist, socialist or populist. When the Delhi Metro proposed an increase in its fares, the Delhi government mooted a subsidy for women travellers. 'Populism again, and economic ruin!', some economists lamented. The government's case was that women find it very unsafe to travel by other public transport, such as taxis and three-wheelers, in which they are crammed in with men, groped and humiliated. The Metro is enabling more women to go to college and to work safely. Policies to improve citizens' ease of living may, prima facie, make it more difficult for the Metro to operate as a business. However, all economists agree, whatever their ideology, that education of women, and more women at work, are good for the economy. Better yardsticks are required to evaluate the health of economies than merely the ease of doing business. Only two women have won the Nobel Prize in economics so far, while 82 men have. The first was Elinor Ostrom, in 2009, for her work on 'the governance of the commons' — community management of shared resources. Some mainstream economists had sniggered that her work was not even economics. For them, good economic science must be about the macro picture represented in numbers and explained by mathematical equations. The work of the second woman who got the prize, Esther Duflo this year, is also about the behaviour of people in micro-systems. Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee, who won the prize with her, have studied what actually happens on the ground in the delivery of education and health in some of India's poorest districts. They also worked with the Delhi government on its school system. India's commerce and industry minister has dismissed their ideas as Leftist and not relevant to India's macro-economic problems. India cannot muddle along with a failing economic paradigm any longer. Local systems solutions are required to solve global systems problems. The solutions must be formed with bottom-up perspectives of citizens on the ground, rather than top-down perceptions of investors and policymakers who try to understand the fundamentals of the economy through stock-markets data and movements of GDP. India must adopt a human-centric, and ecologically-sensitive, paradigm of development before it's too late. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in UK court to fight extradition

Assange wore a blue sweater and a blue sports jacket for the hearing and wore his silvery-grey hair slicked back. After the judge turned down his bid for a three-month delay, Assange — speaking very softly and at times appearing to be near tears — said he didn't understand the proceedings. He said the case is not "equitable" because the US government has "unlimited resources" while he doesn't have easy access to his lawyers or to documents needed to prepare his battle against extradition while he is confined to Belmarsh Prison on the outskirts of London. "They have all the advantages," the 48-year-old Assange said. Lawyer Mark Summers, representing Assange, told the judge that more time was needed to prepare Assange's defence against "unprecedented" use of espionage charges against a journalist. Summers said the case has many facets and will require a "mammoth" amount of planning and preparation. He also accused the US of illegally spying on Assange while he was inside the Ecuadorian Embassy seeking refuge and taking other illegal actions against the WikiLeaks founder. "We need more time," Summers said, asking for a three-month delay. He said Assange would mount a political defense that will be laborious to prepare. Summers said the initial case against Assange was prepared during the administration of former President Barack Obama in 2010 but wasn't acted on until Donald Trump assumed the presidency. He said it represents the administration's aggressive attitude toward whistleblowers. Representing the US, lawyer James Lewis said the U.S. opposed any delay to the proceeding. The case is expected to take months to resolve, with each side able to make several appeals of rulings. The public gallery was jammed with Assange supporters, including former London Mayor Ken Livingstone, and outside the courthouse, others carried placards calling for Assange to be released. There were chants calling for him to be set free. The judge said the full hearing will be heard at Belmarsh Court, which would make it easier for Assange to attend and contains more room for the media. Assange's lawyers said the five days wouldn't be enough for the entire case to be heard. Former Home Secretary Sajid Javid signed an order in June allowing Assange to be extradited. US authorities accuse Assange of scheming with former Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to break a password for a classified government computer. Assange claims he is a journalist entitled to First Amendment protection. DailyhuntDisclaimer: This story is auto-aggregated by a computer program and has not been created or edited by Dailyhunt. Bengaluru: Road rage up, thanks to bad traffic

Exhibiting a greater degree of rancour, 16 per cent of those surveyed said they 'were more likely' to misbehave with other drivers or traffic police and disobey traffic laws. While most people think of road rage as violent assault, it also includes tailgating, abrupt lane changes, speeding, and verbal threats, according to the survey, which covered Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune, and Lucknow and Hyderabad. Going by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), around 4,255 incidents of road rage were reported in Bengaluru in 2015 and 50.1 per cent of those involved were injured in such incidents. While the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) - 4 makes no reference to traffic induced stress, it says 10 per cent of men in Bengaluru between the ages of 15 and 49 suffer from hypertension and 5.6 per cent of women in the same group suffer from the disease Emphasising that stress-related disorders due to driving are a serious health concern, the Tata Lite survey laments there isn't any focused study in India to monitor commuting stress affecting an individual's physiology. 'It's a serious concern, and more people are succumbing to stress brought on by staying in their vehicles for too long in traffic, leading to all sorts of trouble like depression, hypertension, anxiety, rage, diabetes, fatigue, and even heart disease,' it adds. Dr Aviva Pinto Rodrigues, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, who acknowledges that some day to day situations in traffic can be a contributing cause for hypertension, warns that the condition in men can lead to poor semen quality and in women, affect the lining of the uterus, which could potentially affect the healthy implantation of the embryo.
