A year on, sewage continues to flow into Byramangala lake
Most of the sewage from the catchment area of the Valley continues to pollute the lake. A high-powered diesel generator treats 15 MLD of sewage while the rest enters the lake untreated. To treat the proposed sewage by the STP, 4500 Kilo Volt Amperes (max demand a month) is required and that supply has not reached the plant so far. According to a senior Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) official, the required power for the plant was sanctioned for BWSSB over six months ago. "We okayed the supply of 4500 KVA from our 220 KVA receiving station at Rajarajeshwari Nagar to the 220 KVA receiving station at Vrishabhavati Valley. As it is a self-execution project, the supply of electricity from there can flow through only after BWSSB puts in place the necessary infrastructure like Breaker and a 11 KV cable linking it to its STP plant at Kengeri. Permission from the Chief Electrical Inspectorate (CIE) too has to be obtained by the Water Board before we start the supply," he said. A top BWSSB official said that the infrastructure has been laid and the file for approval has been sent to the CIE too. "We hope to run the plant to its full capacity of 60 MLD soon," he said. Officials of KPTCL, BESCOM as well as BWSSB remained tightlipped about the plant still not ready for operation. Rajasthan High Court asks Robert Vadra, his mother to appear before ED on February 12
A bench of Justice P S Bhati, while asking Vadra and others to appear before the agency, however, refused to vacate the stay on their arrest and denied liberty to the ED to take them in custody. Justice Bhati clarified that if the need arises, the ED will have to move the court separately to seek permission for arresting them. Appearing for the ED, Additional Solicitor General Rajdeep Rastogi told the bench that the agency has initiated an inquiry against the owners and partners of Skylight Hospitality Limited on a complaint of money laundering against the company. 'The company moved the court against this inquiry and obtained an order that no coercive action would be taken against them during investigation,' said Rastogi. The ED then moved the court seeking vacation of this order on the ground that there was neither any FIR lodged in the matter nor there was any accused named. 'It is just a fact-finding inquiry which is at an initial stage, so the court should not intervene in the matter at this stage,' Rastogi argued in the court. Admitting the additional solicitor general's arguments, the court removed the 'No Coercive Action' clause from its earlier order. On the basis of a mutual consent of the lawyers from both sides, the bench also ordered firm's owner and partners, including Vadra and his mother to appear before the ED and cooperate with it in the inquiry. The court, however, refused to vacate other part of the order, which had stayed their arrest. It asked the ED to obtain a separate order if the firm's owners and partners are required to be arrested after the initial inquiry. The ED had earlier received a complaint alleging involvement of Vadra in purchase of the 275 bighas of land in Bikaner's Kolayat. The complaint alleged that the land had been purchased in the name of the driver of the mediator Mahesh Nagre using a cheque given by Robert Vadra. Explaining the allegations of money laundering in the deal, Rastogi told PTI that an ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) against the Skylight Hospitality Limited had been registered by the ED. The primary evidence in the case prima facie indicated that the Skylight Hospitality Limited was involved in money laundering. ED had subsequently issued summonses to Robert Vadra and firm's partner Maureen third time in November last year but none of them appeared before the ED and instead moved the high court seeking 'No Coercive Action' order and stay on the arrest. ECI help sought on Rly electrification unit shift
A seven-member delegation of BJD led by party general secretary Badri Narayan Patra submitted a memorandum to the CEO in this regard. "Shifting of this important railway office to Bangalore is a conspiracy of the BJP Government at the Centre. The party has taken the decision to garner votes in Karnataka by highlighting that they have done something significant for the people of the southern State. However, the move will affect Odisha and destroy the electrification process of railway projects in the State," they said. The BJD leaders also told Kumar that the poll code specifies that the Governments at Centre and States cannot take any policy decisions till the completion of election process. However, the decision for closure of Railway Electrification (RE) office in Bhubaneswar has been taken on March 13, three days after the Model Code of Conduct came into force across the country. "This blatant violation of the poll code by BJP through its Central agencies does not augur well for democracy and will affect the conduct of free and fair elections. The BJD is hopeful that the ECI will immediately intervene in this matter and direct Railways to roll back its decision," said Patra. The BJD leaders also alleged that the recent bifurcation of Waltair division from East Coast Railway was done by the BJP-led Government at the Centre to garner votes during the coming elections in Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, BJP State vice-president Samir Mohanty rubbished the allegations and said the party has no role in the decisions taken by Railways. BJD has the right to pursue the matter with the CEO if it feels that there has been any violation of poll code. But its allegations against BJP are baseless, he said and added, "Our party has always given priority to Odisha's interest and will continue to do so." SpiceJet likely to cancel 30-35 flights today; DGCA to monitor airfare surges
The government, taking cognisance of the flight cancellations, has asked airlines to keep fares at reasonable levels although travel experts believe that a total of 50 aircraft being grounded across airlines due to various reasons will cause a spike in fares ahead of the holiday season. 'SpiceJet is rationalising and optimising the use of its Boeing 737NG and Bombardier Q400 aircraft to address the current situation and minimise inconvenience to its passengers. We are evaluating options for augmenting capacity in the coming days through a mix of additional flights and aircraft inductions. We are sure that our operations will be normal very soon,' the airline said in a statement. On Wednesday, Civil Aviation Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola along with Director General of Civil Aviation BS Bhullar met senior officials of domestic airlines to discuss contingency measures in light of the aircraft groundings. 'We will monitor all sectors where cancellations of flights take place and ensure there is no predatory pricing, and if fares are found to be predatory then advisory will be issued to airlines,' Kharola said after the meeting. Explained Fliers will have to cope with untimely flight cancellations The grounding of Boeing 737 MAX planes by the aviation safety regulator is expected to lead to troubles for both airlines and passengers. With a total of 50 aircraft being grounded due to various reasons, ranging from safety and financial problems at airlines, passengers will have to cope with untimely cancellations of flights. The government and the airlines are working to ensure smooth operations by accommodating passengers on other flights on similar routes and by allowing airlines to induct more planes. While these nagging issues will disrupt operations in the near term, airlines are hoping return to normalcy in due course. 'The airlines have assured that grounding of 12 aircraft will not have a significant impact on the operations and they have drawn up a plan as per which SpiceJet has cancelled 14 flights out of its 520 daily flights. They have been able to accommodate the passengers in their own system. Tomorrow will be more challenging and 30-35 flights are expected to be cancelled. SpiceJet has said that they have increased the utilisation of other aircraft due to which cancellations will be at a minimum,' Kharola added. Donald Trump too grounds 737 Max; India says Boeing didn't give confidence Apart from SpiceJet, two large players — IndiGo and Jet Airways — are also facing pressures on deployed capacity due to shortage in commanders and groundings due to non-payment of dues, respectively. Jet Airways on Wednesday withdrew five more aircraft from service owing to non-payment of lease rentals, taking the total number of such non-operational aircraft to 37. A search on Google flights on Wednesday afternoon for Delhi-Goa flight for the same day showed the cheapest nonstop fare to be at Rs 7,157, while the next cheapest nonstop fare was at Rs 23,122. For Thursday, the nonstop single trip fares ranged between Rs 6,951 and Rs 10,132. Bhullar said that the regulator has cleared SpiceJet's proposal to induct two aircraft on wet-lease, and that they are expected to join the airline's fleet by Friday. 'Because of this the cancellations will come down,' he added. Here's a list of countries, airlines that have grounded Boeing's 737 MAX jets 'At least 50 planes are out of action or grounded on the domestic front owing to multiple reasons. That is a significant reduction in domestic airline capacity. The additional capacity coming in is not likely to cover this in the short term, while demand is going to be robust over the next few months because of the school holidays season and surging leisure travel. The shortage of planes and high seat occupancies are expected to push airfares north in the short term. The airfares were at least 15 per cent higher this year compared to last year, and owing to the current situation, airfares are expected to rise further this season.' said Sharat Dhall, COO (B2C), Yatra.com. ew Zealand citizens open to gun reform after massacre
There will be no opposition to it. There's no movement in New Zealand for that. Our media and politics are more left wing," said NRoberts, a carpenter who uses guns for hunting.Elliot Dawson, who survived the shooting at Christchurch's Linwood mosque by hiding in a bathroom, hopes New Zealand follows Australia's lead on gun control. In Australia, a virtual ban on private ownership of semi-automatic rifles and a government-funded gun buyback cut the size of the country's civilian arsenal by almost a third. The ban followed a 1996 massacre in which a lone gunman used assault rifles to kill 35 people in Tasmania state in 1996."Personally, I don't think guns should be legal at all. Maybe in some extreme self-defense, but I don't think they need such firearms like that," Dawson said. "New Zealand is not America. America is a totally different situation. I think in America it would be probably more dangerous to take people's guns away. But here, I don't think we need them at all."Akshesh Sharma moved to Christchurch from Fiji to study. He was shocked that the shooter was able to get his hands on such military-style weapons.Sharma agrees with the prime minister that gun laws need to be tightened."I don't see this as a place where you need guns to live to feel safe," Sharma said. "I can understand in the U.S. maybe, but here it's a different story."Roberts, the gun owner, doubted banning certain types of weapons would be effective. But he said New Zealand should only allow its own citizens to buy guns. Brenton Harrison Tarrant, the Australian charged in the Christchurch shootings, obtained a New Zealand gun license in November 2017 and started legally amassing an arsenal of five guns within a month."I think when people harbor hate like, that these things are possible," Roberts said."Particularly Australian citizens, I don't understand how they can get access to firearms in New Zealand when New Zealand citizens can't get access to firearms in Australia," he added.Ian Britton uses a rifle for shooting rabbits and target shooting. He favours outlawing assault rifles like those used in Christchurch because they're unnecessary."I can't use the words I'd like to use, but it's disgusting. I never thought I'd see that in this country," Britton said.Ardern noted that attempts to reform had failed before under pressure from the gun lobby."There have been attempts to change our laws in 2005, 2012 and after an inquiry in 2017. Now is the time for change," she said.New Zealand was represented at a meeting of Australian police ministers on May 10, 1996, two weeks after the Tasmanian massacre, where it was agreed that semi-automatic long arms would be banned except for use by licensed professional shooters. New Zealand's unique relationship with Australia, its nearest neighbor, is close to that of a state.New Zealand was the only one of nine jurisdictions at the meeting to reject the deal.Philip Alpers, a Sydney University gun policy analyst, said New Zealand had rejected the most important reform among a raft of gun restrictions that halved Australia's gun death rate.If New Zealand "hadn't been the exception on that day and done what Australia did, this wouldn't have happened," Alpers said, referring to the massacre. Lok Sabha elections 2019: In a first, students to help guide voters
Who would know the school premises the best - the location of rooms, drinking water, toilets — other than a student of that school? Hence, the plan to utilise this huge resource,' said a senior official with the Chief Electoral Officer's office in Delhi. Spread over 2,696 locations, Delhi have 13,816 polling stations, of which most are in schools, colleges and other educational institutions. While at least 6,000 cadets from NCC's junior wing would be deployed at the polling stations, the administration of Delhi University and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University have been directed to send a list of at least 1,200 students each. At least 50% of the volunteers should be female, the officer said. The directorate of education and department of social welfare have also been asked to procure wheelchairs for use in the institutions as well as the elections. 'We will receive around 3,000 wheelchairs from Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) free-of-cost. But this is a one-time affair and we would start paying for the wheelchairs from next elections,' the senior poll panel official said. Students and NCC cadets who are going to be deployed as volunteers would be also sensitised on how to handle wheelchairs and facilitate persons with disabilities in casting their votes.
